A small wobble may respond to a modest deadzone adjustment; persistent or returning drift can point to contamination or a worn module. Replacing the module requires checking model compatibility, and drift that remains afterward may need professional diagnosis.
Start with a restart, update, and visual check
- Restart the Steam Deck.
- In Game Mode, open Settings → System and check for SteamOS updates. Install any available update, then reboot.
- Look around the stick for visible debris. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth; do not assume this will correct a worn component.

Test the stick and adjust its deadzone
In Game Mode, open Steam button → Settings → Controller → Calibration & Advanced Settings → Joysticks, then use the input test to see whether the stick registers when untouched. These are the menu labels given in iFixit’s guide; interface labels may change.
If the test shows only a small resting wobble, try a modest deadzone adjustment and retest the games where you noticed drift. A larger deadzone can reduce fine control, and game-specific input settings can affect the result. A deadzone masks some unwanted input; it does not repair worn hardware, and there is no universal setting established for every game.

Clean only if contamination is plausible
Debris is one possible cause of joystick problems. If the symptom appeared after dust or grime accumulated near the stick, cleaning may be worth trying. iFixit’s troubleshooting discussion includes more direct cleaning that involves opening the Deck and using electronics cleaner. Follow a current, device-specific guide and the cleaner’s directions if you take that route; avoid liquid entering the device. Cleaning cannot be expected to fix a worn stick or electrical damage. Calibrate a newly installed thumbstick
If you have just replaced a stick, calibrate it in Desktop Mode using Konsole and the instructions in iFixit’s calibration guide. The guide says Valve recommends software calibration after installing new thumbsticks. It also warns that its procedure may not function in SteamOS 3.3; that version-specific caveat is not evidence of current-version behavior. [iFixit’s Steam Deck thumbstick calibration guide]

Replace a persistently drifting thumbstick
If drift persists after reasonable cleaning and settings adjustments, or returns soon after, the analog stick may be worn. iFixit describes the thumbsticks as modular replacement parts. Choose a Steam Deck replacement thumbstick module that matches your exact model rather than assuming modules are interchangeable.

Check the LCD model’s controller type
For an LCD Steam Deck, find the Steam Deck Controller ID in Settings → System. The ID distinguishes two controller types: MEDA indicates Type A, and MHDA indicates Type B. Check OLED compatibility separately
Do not apply the LCD Type A/Type B distinction to an OLED model. Check compatibility against a guide or parts listing specifically for the matching OLED version. Valve announced its iFixit partnership for replacement parts and repair guides, saying, “we designed Steam Deck to be repairable.” That announcement does not establish current stock or availability in your region. If drift remains after a compatible replacement and calibration, the cause may be a cable, connector, or circuit-board fault. Diagnosing these can require opening the Deck and handling delicate connectors. If you are not equipped for that work, contact Steam Support or a professional repair service rather than continuing to open the device.
