You don’t need five accessories to start playing on a Steam Deck. A USB-C PD power bank, a compatible hub, and optional microSD storage cover the main needs; a dock is an alternative for a more permanent setup. Here are five useful starter-pack picks by job, with clear notes on what each does—and who can skip it.
What does a Steam Deck starter pack actually need?
Start with the setup you want, not a preset bundle. For handheld play, the Deck itself may be enough. Add a power bank for longer sessions away from an outlet, storage if your library outgrows the built-in space, or a hub or dock to connect a screen and peripherals.

Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED’s power input as a 45W PD3.0 USB Type-C supply. Its specifications also list a 50Wh battery and estimate 3–12 hours of gameplay, depending on the game and settings; that range is not a guaranteed runtime. These figures are useful compatibility context, not a promise that an accessory will produce a particular charge time or playtime. Steam Deck OLED specifications
Five useful picks, organized by job
| Pick | What it helps with | Who can skip it |
|---|---|---|
| 1. USB-C PD power bank, such as Anker 737 Power Bank (PowerCore 24K) | Portable power away from an outlet | Players who usually play near a charger |
| 2. Anker A83S1 handheld console hub | Connecting a display, USB devices, or wired Ethernet | Players who use the Deck only as a handheld |
| 3. UHS-I microSD card | Expanding game storage | Players with enough built-in space for their library |
| 4. Steam Deck Docking Station | A more permanent desk or TV connection | Players who do not need a fixed docked setup |
| 5. A suitable USB-C PD wall adapter | Powering the Deck while docked through the A83S1 hub | Players who are not using that hub, or who already have a suitable adapter |
1. USB-C PD power bank for travel
Anker’s Steam Deck power-bank information says the Deck can be charged through USB-C PD and lists the Anker 737 Power Bank (PowerCore 24K) among its products. Treat that as an example to investigate, not a tested endorsement: the evidence does not establish a real-world recharge count for this model.

When choosing a power bank, check USB-C PD support and output, then weigh capacity against the unit’s carried weight and your travel needs. The Deck’s 45W PD3.0 input specification is a practical benchmark. A compatible higher-rated PD source does not force the Deck to draw more power than it needs. Check regional airline and travel rules for the specific battery you plan to carry. Anker’s Steam Deck power-bank page
Skip it if: most of your play happens near an outlet. A larger-capacity bank may add useful flexibility, but also adds weight to a portable setup.
2. Anker A83S1 hub for a compact docked setup
The Anker A83S1 is marketed for handheld game consoles and offers a way to connect the Deck to a display and peripherals without choosing a full-size dock. Anker recommends connecting a 45W-or-higher adapter when using this hub with Steam Deck for stable video output and device function. Anker A83S1 product information

Anker’s guide lists SteamOS support, HDMI 2.0 up to 4K@60Hz, gigabit Ethernet, USB data ports, and up to 100W PD input. Those are hub specifications, not a guarantee of the Deck’s actual display output or charging behavior; results depend on the host, display, cable, and adapter chain. Anker A83S1 user guide
Check physical fit before buying: Anker says the hub is not compatible with cases that have a kickstand and specifies case thickness of no more than 2 mm for proper fit. If you use a case, confirm connector access and clearance too.
Skip it if: you do not plan to use an external display, wired network, or USB peripherals. A hub is useful for those connections, not a requirement for handheld play.

3. UHS-I microSD card for optional storage
Valve lists UHS-I microSD expansion for the Steam Deck. A card can make room for more games without changing your existing setup; choose capacity based on the size of your library and your budget. The available specifications do not establish one best brand or capacity. Steam Deck OLED specifications

Skip it if: your current storage comfortably holds the games you play. There is no need to buy a card just because it appears in a starter pack.
4. Steam Deck Docking Station for a permanent setup
For a desk or TV setup that stays in one place, Valve’s Docking Station is an alternative to a compact hub. Steam describes it as connecting the Deck to external displays, wired networking, USB peripherals, and power. The choice is about the setup you need: a compact hub is easier to carry, while a dock suits a more fixed location. Steam Deck Docking Station

Skip it if: you only play handheld, or a compact hub already covers the connections you use.

If you choose the A83S1, pair it with a suitable USB-C PD wall adapter. Anker specifically recommends a 45W-or-higher adapter for Steam Deck use with the hub. The hub guide’s up-to-100W PD input figure describes the hub, not what the Deck will necessarily draw. Check the adapter’s output and USB-C PD support rather than relying on wattage alone.
Skip it if: you are not using the hub, or already own an adapter that meets Anker’s recommendation. This is a supporting part of the hub setup, not an additional must-have for every Deck owner.

Choose between a hub and a dock
A hub and a dock serve overlapping connection needs, so most owners should choose based on where and how they will use the Deck rather than buying both automatically.
| Setup | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Travel or occasional connections | Compact hub | Portable option for display, network, and USB connections |
| Desk or TV used regularly in one place | Dock | Designed for a more permanent external-display and peripheral setup |
| Handheld play only | Neither | External connections are optional |
The Anker 555 USB-C Hub’s product page lists HDMI up to 4K@60Hz, Ethernet up to 1Gbps, USB ports, SD and microSD slots, and up to 100W PD input with up to 85W PD output for a laptop. Those laptop specifications do not establish Steam Deck compatibility. If considering it, confirm compatibility separately rather than assuming that generic USB-C hub features guarantee it. Quick Recap
Check these details before buying
- Power: Confirm USB-C PD support and the output profile. For the A83S1 setup, follow Anker’s recommendation for a 45W-or-higher adapter.
- Connections: Buy only the ports you will use, such as HDMI, Ethernet, USB data, or card readers.
- Display chain: Check the Deck, display, cable, resolution, refresh rate, and any adapters together. A hub’s maximum specification does not guarantee the host will deliver that output.
- Fit: Check case thickness, kickstand design, and access to the Deck’s USB-C port before choosing the A83S1.
- Storage: Select microSD capacity for your own library; no single capacity is established as ideal.
- Portability: Consider the combined weight of a power bank, hub, cables, and adapter—not only the size of each accessory on its own.
