Review every output before launch and judge the next batch against the campaign goal—not the number of videos produced. TikTok and Google Ads both offer native creation tools, but their inputs, eligibility rules, controls, and testing options differ.
Start with the campaign, not the video template
Write a brief before opening a creative tool. Specify the audience, objective, offer, substantiated claims, call to action, platform, and intended placements. The objective matters because it can determine which campaign subtypes and ad formats are available.

For Google Video campaigns, documented objectives include Sales, Leads, Website traffic, and YouTube reach, views, or engagements. Available formats vary by subtype and can include skippable in-stream, in-feed, bumper, Shorts, and out-stream ads. Google’s campaign guidance says advertisers can create up to 50 ads when building a campaign; existing logged-in users may see the documented workflow, while new-user onboarding can differ. For TikTok, decide which placements and campaign settings you need before choosing an automation feature. Some features are limited to selected advertisers or campaign configurations, and a template’s orientation can restrict where it runs.

Prepare source assets for reuse
Organize source material so a team can create variants without repeatedly searching for files or re-approving the same claims. A useful asset set includes:
- Product or service footage and still images that accurately represent what is being advertised.
- Approved headlines, supporting copy, offer details, and calls to action.
- Logos, brand colors, fonts, and any required brand guidance.
- Voiceover, music, and other media with usage rights appropriate for the intended ads.
- Claim substantiation and notes about required disclosures or restrictions.
TikTok’s Video Templates tool assembles videos from selected templates and uploaded photos, text, and logos. Google’s auto-generated video process uses eligible campaign assets; inputs may include text and images, Performance Max or Demand Gen brand guidelines, app-store images, or Merchant Center product images, depending on campaign type. The available inputs are not identical across campaigns. Google describes these requirements and limitations in its auto-generated video documentation.

Choose a production route that fits the job

Feature availability and campaign rules can change. Check the relevant platform documentation and the options visible in the specific account before building a workflow around a tool. TikTok’s Video Templates instructions, Smart Video page, and Automate Creative help page describe their respective workflows and constraints.
Design variants so the results are interpretable
Automation can produce more assets, but volume alone does not tell a team what worked. Where practical, vary one meaningful creative dimension at a time: the opening hook, product benefit, proof point, offer, call to action, or orientation. Keep the rest of the ad consistent enough that the team can understand what changed.

For example, a campaign could hold the offer and audience constant while testing two openings, then produce an approved vertical adaptation for a placement that needs it. This is a workflow recommendation, not a promise that a platform will isolate variables or that a particular version will perform better. Use platform experiments where available; otherwise, avoid treating uncontrolled before-and-after comparisons as proof of causation.
Review each output before it runs
Generated or adapted creative still needs human review. Check the ad against the brief and the actual placement before publishing:

- The team has a record of which source assets and settings produced each version.
Preview generated assets where the platform provides a preview or reporting view. In Google, source-asset changes or deletion can affect dependent auto-generated videos, so treat the source set as part of the live campaign. In TikTok Automate Creative, settings are fixed after publication; TikTok states that a different configuration requires a new campaign.

Choose measures that match the original objective, then review campaign and asset-level outcomes where the platform exposes them. Do not assume that a high-volume batch, a new orientation, or an automation feature caused a result merely because performance changed afterward.

Google documents asset visibility and controls for Performance Max video automation, plus a one-click A/B experiment for selected enhancements. TikTok’s Automate Creative documentation says split testing is not supported yet. TikTok One describes recommended creative generation and always-on enhancement, including quality changes, music refresh, translation and dubbing, and resizing within Smart+. These descriptions indicate available product functions, not a guarantee of performance.
Platforms also publish performance figures, which should be read as their own reported benchmarks rather than universal or independently established effects. Google Ads Help reports a 12% average uplift in conversions for advertisers that included at least one video in Performance Max campaigns, and 20% more YouTube conversions for advertisers using horizontal, vertical, and square video in Performance Max compared with horizontal video alone. The page does not state a publication date. TikTok for Business reports 5% lower CPA for Recommended Creatives among SMB clients, 3.6% lower CPA for Automatic Enhancement at non-SMB global scale, and a 4.5% performance gain for advertisers using fresh creative assets; publication dates are not stated. The available descriptions do not provide enough methodological detail to generalize these numbers to a particular account.
