The practical difference is in the documented controls and settings: Valve describes suspending and waking the Deck with its power button, while Nintendo also documents other ways to enter Sleep Mode and configurable Auto-Sleep timers. The available official guidance does not establish which device wakes faster, uses less battery in sleep, or resumes games more reliably.
What “quick resume” and “Sleep Mode” mean here
These are each a way to pause an active play session by putting the device to sleep, then wake it and return to the game. Valve calls the Steam Deck feature “quick suspend / resume”; Nintendo calls its feature Sleep Mode. The descriptions support a practical comparison, not a claim that the two systems work identically under the hood.

Neither description promises that every game, online session, or background process will behave the same way. The cited pages also describe suspending and resuming a game, not keeping multiple games suspended for a multi-game quick-resume menu.

Does one device resume faster or more reliably?
The official descriptions explain how to use each feature, but they do not publish a controlled comparison of wake time, battery drain during sleep, or game-by-game resume reliability. Those outcomes should not be inferred from the feature names or button actions. A defensible ranking would require current testing across specified games and conditions.

Sleep is not the same as powering off
Sleep Mode or suspension is intended to let you return to a game session. Fully turning off a Nintendo Switch is different: Nintendo warns that unsaved progress may be lost when the console is powered off. If you need to preserve progress, save in the game before choosing to shut the console down. Nintendo’s Sleep Mode Q&A
