A flyby captures a brief set of observations as a spacecraft passes an asteroid. A rendezvous keeps the spacecraft nearby for repeated observations and detailed mapping. A sample-return mission adds something neither remote approach can provide on its own: asteroid material that can be examined in laboratories on Earth. These approaches answer different questions, and a mission can combine them—as NASA’s OSIRIS-REx did at Bennu.
What does an asteroid flyby reveal?
A flyby is a brief encounter: the spacecraft gathers images and instrument readings while passing the asteroid. Its observations can help characterize the target, but what it captures depends on the instruments aboard, the encounter geometry, and how much observation time is available. Flybys therefore do not all provide the same coverage or detail.

OSIRIS-REx used a Bennu flyby to test and calibrate its instrument suite. That was one phase of a broader mission, not a standalone flyby example: the spacecraft later studied Bennu at close range, mapped it, and collected a sample. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission history describes these phases.
What does an asteroid rendezvous reveal?
A rendezvous allows a spacecraft to remain in proximity to an asteroid rather than observe it only during a pass. Repeated observations can build a more detailed picture of surface features and geological context, supporting the selection and characterization of locations for close operations. The spacecraft still relies on its instruments; staying nearby does not by itself provide material for laboratory analysis on Earth.

OSIRIS-REx mapped Bennu and produced a 3D terrain model with 20 cm resolution, a mission-specific mapping result rather than a standard capability of every rendezvous. NASA’s account of Bennu observations describes the model and surface findings.
What does sample return add?
A returned sample gives scientists physical material to analyze on Earth. Laboratory instruments can examine minerals and organic material in ways that spacecraft remote-sensing instruments may not resolve. Because the sample is available for multiple analyses, researchers can investigate it using methods beyond those carried aboard the spacecraft.

That difference produced a concrete finding at Bennu. NASA reported magnesium-sodium phosphate in the returned material that had not been seen in the spacecraft’s remote-sensing data. This illustrates what laboratory analysis can add; it does not mean remote sensing is generally ineffective. NASA also reported the sample as rich in nitrogen and carbon. NASA’s report on the phosphate finding includes those results.
A sample has an important limit: it represents the material collected at the sampling location, not necessarily every terrain type or composition across an asteroid. Mapping and remote observations help put that material in context. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx overview describes the mission’s sample-return science.

How the mission types compare
| Mission approach | Observation and context | Access to physical material |
|---|---|---|
| Flyby | Brief encounter; observations depend on instruments, geometry, and available time. | No sample is returned by the flyby alone. |
| Rendezvous | Sustained proximity enables repeated observations and mapping, building geological context. | No sample is returned unless sampling is also part of the mission. |
| Sample return | May be paired with remote observations and mapping that help contextualize collection. | Provides collected material for Earth-based laboratory analysis; the sample does not represent the entire asteroid. |
Why missions combine these approaches
Flyby, rendezvous, and sample return are not mutually exclusive categories. OSIRIS-REx combined remote observations and detailed mapping at Bennu with sample collection and return. The observations helped characterize the asteroid, while analysis of returned material revealed detail that had not appeared in remote-sensing data.
Japan’s Hayabusa2 mission to Ryugu also combined remote sensing and sampling. It carried a small impactor designed to excavate fresh material for collection, adding an experiment intended to expose material beneath the surface. NASA’s Hayabusa2 mission page, NASA ARES’ Hayabusa2 page, and a NASA technical report on the spacecraft and impactor experiment describe the mission and its instruments.
