For most people buying a new Steam Deck, the OLED is the stronger all-round choice: it has a larger HDR screen with a higher refresh-rate ceiling, a bigger battery, newer wireless hardware and lower listed weight. The LCD model makes sense when it is substantially cheaper in your region and its smaller, 60 Hz screen and shorter estimated battery range suit your needs. Check the current Steam listing where you live before deciding; prices and availability vary.
Steam Deck LCD vs. OLED at a glance
| Feature | LCD | OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 7-inch optically bonded LCD; 1280 × 800; up to 60 Hz | 7.4-inch HDR OLED; 1280 × 800; up to 90 Hz |
| Brightness listed by Valve | 400 nits typical | 600 nits SDR; up to 1,000 nits peak HDR |
| Battery | 40 Wh; estimated 2–8 hours of gameplay | 50 Wh; estimated 3–12 hours of gameplay |
| Listed storage configurations | 256 GB | 512 GB or 1 TB |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 5; Bluetooth 5.0 | Wi-Fi 6E; Bluetooth 5.3 |
| Approximate weight | 669 g | 640 g |
| Screen finish | No etched screen listed for the current configuration | 1 TB model has premium anti-glare etched glass |
These are Valve’s published specifications, not independent measurements. The brightness figures describe different conditions—LCD typical brightness versus OLED SDR and peak HDR—so they are not a direct like-for-like comparison. Actual game frame rates depend on the game and its settings.

Choose the OLED if the screen and battery matter most
A larger, faster-refreshing display
The OLED screen is 7.4 inches diagonally, compared with 7 inches on the LCD. Both are 1280 × 800, but the OLED supports HDR and refresh rates up to 90 Hz rather than 60 Hz. That gives the OLED the more capable display hardware; it does not mean every game will run at 90 frames per second.
A larger battery, with game-dependent runtime
Valve lists a 50 Wh battery and estimated gameplay of 3–12 hours for OLED, versus 40 Wh and 2–8 hours for LCD. Those are broad estimates, not a promise of a set number of extra hours: runtime varies with the game and how the device is used. Valve also says the OLED has “30-50% more battery life”; treat that as Valve’s claim, not an independent test result or a fixed improvement in every game.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
More storage in the listed configurations
The current comparison lists the OLED in 512 GB and 1 TB configurations, while the LCD configuration listed is 256 GB. The 1 TB OLED also includes premium anti-glare etched glass. That finish may be useful in reflective surroundings, but it is specific to that model rather than the OLED range as a whole.
When the LCD is the better buy
The LCD can be a sensible choice if it costs considerably less where you are and you are comfortable with a 7-inch, 60 Hz LCD screen and its published 2–8-hour gameplay estimate. The OLED’s advantages are real hardware differences, but whether they justify a price gap depends on your budget and how much you value the larger HDR display, longer published runtime range, extra included storage and lighter weight.

Is the OLED faster for gaming?
Valve lists a 6 nm APU for OLED and a 7 nm APU for LCD, along with supporting internal changes on the OLED. Those specifications establish a difference in manufacturing process, but they do not establish a broad gaming-performance uplift. It is more accurate to view OLED as a refinement across screen, battery, connectivity, weight and internals than as a new performance tier.
Rank #3
Storage expansion and connectivity
All models support microSD expansion. Valve specifies UHS-I support for SD, SDXC and SDHC cards, so a UHS-I microSD card for Steam Deck is an optional way to add storage. Choose based on the size of your library and current card specifications rather than assuming a particular capacity or product is required.
OLED’s Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 are newer than the LCD’s Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0. Their practical benefit depends on having a compatible network or accessory; they do not change the display or battery trade-off.

How to make the choice
- Check the local price and availability. Compare the current LCD and OLED listings in your regional Steam store; do not assume prices from another market apply.
- Decide how much the display matters. Pick OLED if HDR, the larger panel or a refresh-rate ceiling of 90 Hz is important. The LCD tops out at 60 Hz.
- Consider your time away from power. OLED has the larger battery and higher published gameplay range, but the actual runtime depends on the game and use.
- Match storage to your library. Compare the listed built-in capacities and consider microSD expansion. If you want etched anti-glare glass, note that Valve lists it on the 1 TB OLED.
- Use price to break the tie. If the OLED’s added features are worth the current local premium to you, choose it. If the LCD is meaningfully cheaper and its trade-offs are acceptable, it remains a reasonable option.
