EmuDeck controller problems usually come from one of two places: the Steam Input layout applied in Game Mode or the individual emulator’s input bindings. Check the Steam layout first, then adjust the emulator only if its buttons still behave incorrectly. Automatic mapping is emulator-specific: EmuDeck documents a Cemu setup flow, not one universal auto-map feature.
Start with the Steam Input layout
EmuDeck uses Steam Input to standardize Steam Deck controls across emulators, but the layout can conflict with features exposed directly by an external controller. In Game Mode, open the affected game or emulator’s Controller screen, select the current layout at the top, and choose the appropriate available profile.
If no specific EmuDeck Steam Input profile is available for that emulator, EmuDeck recommends Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad. Other layouts may leave controls unavailable. A profile may also provide emulator hotkeys, so do not assume that a layout is wrong just because it includes more than ordinary gamepad buttons. See EmuDeck’s Controls 101 and External Controllers guidance.
Correct bindings inside the emulator
If the Steam layout is appropriate but buttons are still assigned incorrectly in the emulator, open that emulator’s input configuration and map the controls there. Some emulators let you save a separate profile, which can preserve your changes without replacing EmuDeck’s defaults. The exact settings path varies by emulator; EmuDeck’s Controls 101 directs users to the emulator’s own input settings when controls do not match expectations.

When configuring through an emulator window in Steam Deck Desktop Mode, hold Start for three seconds to switch from desktop controls to gamepad controls before navigating its menus.
Automatic mapping: the documented Cemu workflow
Automatic mapping is not a single EmuDeck-wide operation. EmuDeck’s Cemu guide documents this specific procedure for Cemu on SteamOS:

- Open Cemu’s input settings.
- Add a controller.
- Set the API to SDLController and select the connected controller.
- Click Add, then save the profile with a distinct name.
Use the Cemu guide for that emulator’s documented steps. Do not assume the same API, button, or automatic mapping behavior exists in other emulators.
When an external controller acts strangely
Double inputs or missing native features
Steam Input can standardize controls, but EmuDeck warns that it may not expose some external controllers’ native features, including gyro. To test whether Steam Input is the cause for a particular game, open its Controller screen, open the gear menu, and disable Steam Input. Restarting the game may be necessary for the change to take effect. This trades the standardized Steam Input layer for the controller’s direct behavior.

EmuDeck specifically says users seeing double inputs with the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller may try disabling Steam Input for the affected game. This is a troubleshooting step, not a general requirement for that controller. See the External Controllers documentation.
Wrong player assignment
For multiplayer, check controller order in the Steam Deck Quick Access menu. EmuDeck notes that order can determine which device is identified as Player 1. Reorder the connected controllers there, then test again before changing each emulator’s bindings.

Restore EmuDeck defaults if remapping did not help
If a changed input setting has made controls unusable, EmuDeck says its defaults can be restored from the application’s Manage Emulators page. On Windows, its known-issues guidance also describes selecting the emulator and choosing Reset configuration. Resetting removes the current configuration; note any custom profile choices you want to recreate before using it. Refer to Controls 101 and the Windows known issues page.
Choose the narrowest fix that matches the symptom
- Buttons are wrong across the game or emulator: inspect the Steam Input layout in Game Mode.
- The layout looks right, but emulator actions are assigned incorrectly: edit the emulator’s input bindings and, if available, save a separate profile.
- A native external-controller feature is missing or input is duplicated: test the affected game with Steam Input disabled.
- The wrong controller is Player 1: adjust controller order in Quick Access.
- Controls remain unusable after these checks: restore the emulator configuration from Manage Emulators.
These instructions follow EmuDeck’s published wiki procedures; menu labels can change. The documented steps do not establish compatibility for every controller and emulator combination, so check the current documentation for the specific setup when its controls still do not work.
