One workaround described in third-party guides is to copy the game folder somewhere the picker can reach, patch the copy, and copy the results back. It can solve the problem in some setups, but the only published description of it is a third-party article without measured results, so treat it as something to try with a backup in place, not a guaranteed fix.
Why the patcher cannot see the game folder
The Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based system, not Windows. Valve’s Steam Deck booklet (2022) puts it directly: “Steam Deck is a PC, but it doesn’t come with Windows.” Most Windows games run through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer. Each game gets a prefix, a Windows-style environment with its own drive_c folder tree and registry.

A Windows installer or patcher expects drive letters and familiar folder names. On the Steam Deck, the game’s files sit at a Linux path, often beneath hidden directories, and a Windows-style browser may not display them easily. Community reports describe two recurring problems: hidden folders do not appear in the file picker, and the Z: drive, which community reports describe as the route into the Linux filesystem, is not where the patcher expects the game to be. These are anecdotal observations from user discussions, not measured results.

Two different failures can produce the same message. The picker may be unable to browse to the game, or the patcher may run in a different prefix from the game and therefore never see its files. The second case is easy to miss. Valve’s Proton FAQ describes prefixes and states that manually launching an executable with Proton requires a desktop launcher file, a method the FAQ itself says it has not tested. Any patcher that claims to work in every setup deserves caution.

- Carrying case with removable liner
Check these before you start
- Install available system updates and restart the Steam Deck. Steam Support’s troubleshooting guidance recommends this when applications behave unstably. It is general advice, not a patcher-specific fix.
- Confirm that the patch matches your exact game version. A patch built for a different release can fail even when the path is correct.
- Back up the entire game folder to an external drive or a second location on your microSD card. The relay method also needs free space for a second copy of the game, so check the available storage first.
- Note the game’s Steam Play setting. Open the game’s Library entry, select Properties, then Compatibility. This changes the Proton version the game uses, not the patcher’s file picker, but you should know what it is set to before you change anything.
The relay copy method, step by step
The method below follows the third-party article that describes it. Valve’s documentation does not endorse it for patchers.
- Switch to Desktop Mode and open Steam. Right-click the game in your Library, choose Manage, then Browse local files to open the game’s folder.
- Copy the entire game folder to a visible location such as Downloads or Desktop.
- Launch the patcher through Bottles, through Protontricks, or by adding it as a non-Steam game and running it with Proton. The article does not say which option works best. If the patcher cannot see the copy, check which prefix it runs in first, because the prefix determines what the patcher can reach.
- In the patcher’s file picker, browse to the staged copy through the Z: entry. Choose the folder that contains the game’s executable, not a parent folder.
- Run the patch and wait for it to finish without closing the window early.
- Copy the patched files back into the original game folder, replacing the files when prompted. Keep the backup until the game launches and runs correctly.
The label “ultra-stable” appears in some write-ups of this method, but no measured success rate has been published for it, and the article does not test it against a named list of patchers or games.

When it still fails
The picker still cannot reach the copy
The patcher is probably running in a different prefix from the one the copy was made for. Try the other launch options in step 3 (Bottles, Protontricks, or a non-Steam entry), and compare the results. Because Valve’s FAQ says manual Proton launching is untested, expect trial and error rather than a documented procedure.

The game will not launch or patched files disappear
Restore the game from your backup first. Then avoid running Steam’s file verification on a patched install. Steam’s Properties, then Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files option can replace files that it considers altered, which would undo the patch.
The patch needs something the method does not cover
Some patches require a dependency, a registry change, or a language or runtime setting that the relay method does not address. The sources available for this method do not cover these cases, so check the patch’s own documentation for requirements before you repeat the steps.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

What Steam’s transfer feature does not do
Steam’s Local Network Game Transfers feature copies eligible game installation and update content between Steam clients on a local network, under conditions Valve lists. It does not apply an external .exe patch, and it does not transfer local saves or configuration files. It will not help with a patcher’s file picker.
