Yes—according to creator PhyFawkes, the “Steam Boy” is now a self-contained handheld rather than a Steam Deck motherboard that needs an external monitor. The October 2026 update shows Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on the integrated screen. Almost all of the electronics remain unmodified LCD Steam Deck hardware; the major additions are a custom AMOLED display, its adapter board and redesigned cooling hardware. The creator has not published an independent benchmark, parts list, build guide or indication that the device is for sale.
What changed in the October 2026 update
PhyFawkes posted on Reddit on October 13, 2026: “The Steam Boy is now fully functional! Took a while, but here we are.” The post includes gameplay from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 running on the completed-looking handheld. In a follow-up reply, the creator clarified what “fully functional” means for this project: “Almost all internals are taken unmodified from a Steam Deck. Only the display and the adapter PCB for it are new.”

That distinction matters. Earlier work could run the Steam Deck electronics but relied on an external monitor while the custom screen was being developed. The new demonstration indicates that the display is now connected inside the small enclosure, making the build usable as an independent handheld. “Fully functional” remains the creator’s status description, not a certification or independent technical verdict.

What is inside the Game Boy-sized enclosure?
PC Guide reports that the project began by fitting an LCD Steam Deck motherboard into a body roughly the size of a classic Game Boy. The build retains the original Deck motherboard and battery, along with its speakers, face buttons, thumbstick, D-pad and trackpad. Keeping those parts unmodified is the unusual engineering choice: the enclosure changes dramatically, while the core computing platform stays familiar.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
| Part or characteristic | What is reported | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Core electronics | LCD Steam Deck motherboard and battery | Creator says these remain unmodified |
| Controls and audio | Deck face buttons, thumbstick, D-pad, trackpad and speakers | Retained from the original hardware |
| Display | AMOLED, 90Hz; dimensions reported as 1080 × 1200 or 1200 × 1080 | Reports present the same resolution axes in opposite orientation |
| Display connection | Custom adapter PCB | Converts the new panel for the Deck ribbon-cable interface |
| Cooling | 30 × 7 mm fan, heatsink and 3D-printed mount | Reported by PC Guide and Tom’s Hardware |
| Enclosure | Approximately classic-Game-Boy scale | Exact external dimensions have not been published |
The display is the main replacement part. PC Guide describes a 1080 × 1200 AMOLED panel at 90Hz, while Tom’s Hardware lists it as 1200 × 1080 at 90Hz and says the panel was originally intended for virtual-reality hardware. The reversed dimensions appear to reflect orientation rather than two different resolutions; both accounts agree on an AMOLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate. A custom adapter PCB is required to connect that panel to the Steam Deck’s display ribbon cable.
Why cooling is the hardest constraint
A standard Steam Deck has considerably more room for its heat pipe, fan and airflow path. Compressing the same motherboard into a Game Boy-scale shell leaves little space for heat removal. The Steam Boy therefore uses a tiny 30 × 7 mm fan with a heatsink and a custom 3D-printed mounting piece.
PC Guide reports temperatures of about 70°C while playing TUNIC and about 90°C during Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Those are project figures, not measurements from an independent laboratory, and the reports do not provide a sustained temperature log, ambient conditions or fan-curve data. They nevertheless show why the cooling system is central to the design: the most demanding demonstration pushes the compact enclosure close to 90°C.

What the Clair Obscur demonstration proves
The video establishes that the custom display can show a modern 3D game directly on the modded handheld. It is evidence of display integration and basic game operation, not a performance review. The post does not publish frame-rate measurements, frame-time graphs, battery runtime, power draw or a sustained thermal result for the Steam Boy.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is demanding enough that configuration matters even on a normal Steam Deck. Steam Deck HQ reports that setting SteamDeck=0 %command% exposes fuller graphics controls, while FSR4 injection can improve image quality. That testing also found that a 30 FPS cap gives more consistent frame pacing, with occasional dips to 24–27 FPS in larger or chaotic scenes and a configuration temperature of approximately 80°C.
Those Steam Deck HQ numbers describe a standard Steam Deck, not PhyFawkes’s modified unit. The smaller fan, different display and altered enclosure make it unsafe to transfer the figures directly to the Steam Boy. The creator’s footage demonstrates playability, but it does not establish a particular frame rate or battery life.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
How this build differs from a normal Steam Deck
- Display: The Steam Boy substitutes a high-resolution 90Hz AMOLED panel for the stock LCD screen.
- Mechanical layout: The motherboard, battery and controls are rearranged inside a body around classic Game Boy scale.
- Cooling: A 30 × 7 mm fan, heatsink and printed mount replace the space and airflow arrangement of the retail shell.
- Interface electronics: The custom adapter PCB bridges the AMOLED panel and the original Deck display connection.
- Software: No new firmware or operating-system modification has been identified in the public update.
The result is not a smaller product made by the original manufacturer. It is a custom enclosure and thermal solution wrapped around largely stock Steam Deck internals.

No public source tied to the October update lists a retail release, kit, price, parts list or step-by-step construction guide. The creator has shown the working hardware but has not announced commercial availability. The project should therefore be treated as a personal hardware modification, not an announced product.
Reproducing it would require precision disassembly of Steam Deck components, fabrication of a suitable enclosure, an AMOLED panel that can be electrically adapted to the Deck ribbon cable, a custom adapter PCB and a cooling system that fits the available volume. Without published drawings, board files, firmware notes and thermal measurements, another builder cannot assume that the pictured unit can be duplicated from publicly documented instructions.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What to watch for in future updates
The most useful next evidence would be a parts list and enclosure files, exact outside dimensions, a schematic or description of the display adapter, and repeatable tests covering frame rate, battery runtime, fan noise and sustained temperatures. Those details would show whether the Steam Boy is merely a successful one-off demonstration or a design other enthusiasts can reproduce safely.
For now, the October update establishes a clear milestone: a mostly stock LCD Steam Deck has been integrated into a Game Boy-sized custom shell with a working internal AMOLED screen, and it can display Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It does not establish commercial availability, official support, long-term reliability or benchmark performance for the modified handheld.
