If a Steam Deck game starts and then closes, hangs, or drops back to the Library, work through these checks in order: update and restart SteamOS, review the game’s Deck compatibility details, test Proton for that game, and verify its installed files. These steps apply to Steam Deck LCD and OLED models, but they cannot identify a title-specific cause without the game name and its symptoms.
1. Update SteamOS and restart the Deck
Install any available SteamOS update, then restart the device and try the game again. If you use third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, temporarily exit or disable them before retesting. Valve lists updates, a restart, and checking third-party apps among its initial troubleshooting steps; they are sensible first checks, not proof that an outdated system or an app caused the failure. See Valve’s Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide.

2. Check the game’s Deck compatibility details
Open the game’s Steam Store page and review its Steam Deck Compatibility section. Valve’s rating has four categories:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Verified: The game works well on Deck by default.
- Playable: It works, but may require a manual adjustment, such as changing controls or using a mouse or touchscreen in a launcher.
- Unsupported: Valve currently does not consider it playable on Deck.
- Unknown: Valve has not tested it. This is not a confirmed failure rating.
For a Playable or Unsupported game, check which specific requirements are unmet. That information can point to a likely obstacle, but it does not establish why your copy fails to launch. Ratings and game behavior can also change as titles are updated.

- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
3. Try a different Proton version for the game
Proton lets Steam run many Windows games on Linux, but compatibility varies by title and can change after a game or software update. If the game is a Windows title, try the latest Proton version currently offered in its Compatibility settings:
- In the Library, highlight the game and open its Menu.
- Choose Properties, then Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version shown, then let any download finish before launching the game again.
Valve notes that forcing Proton may prompt Steam to download the Windows version of a game if only its Linux version is installed. Do not assume that a particular Proton release or community build is the best choice for every game; a workaround reported for one title may depend on that title’s version.

4. Verify the game files
If the game still will not launch after a restart, check its installation for missing or damaged files:
- Restart Steam, then open the game’s Properties.
- Choose Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for verification to finish; Valve says it may take several minutes.
Steam may report that one or more files failed verification because they are local configuration files that should not be replaced. Valve says this can be normal. A failed item does not automatically mean the game installation is corrupt, so repeated verification is not a useful response to that result by itself. See Valve’s file verification guidance.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
5. Review operating-system and hardware requirements
Check the Steam Store page for the game’s supported operating systems and hardware requirements. If Steam displays “Game is not available on your current platform,” Valve says the game is not supported on the operating system currently in use; it also advises checking hardware requirements. A Windows game launched with Proton may work, but support is not guaranteed for every title or update. Valve’s platform availability guidance explains that message.
6. Look for a title-specific Proton issue
If the general checks do not help, search the Steam Play community discussions for the game and consult the Proton bug database for a matching issue. Compare reports carefully: a workaround may only apply to a particular game update, Proton version, or error. Valve’s Preparing to Launch support guidance notes that launch failures can have many causes across different hardware and software configurations, so a fix for another player is not necessarily the fix for your Deck.
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
7. Contact support before attempting system recovery
If the failure persists, contact the game’s developer through its official support channel or reach out to Steam Support. Include the exact game title, your Deck model, the SteamOS and Proton versions shown on the device, any error text, and which checks you have tried. Valve recommends contacting the developer when its common checks do not resolve a game-specific problem; support cannot guarantee a resolution.

Valve describes recovery options with different effects: some clear local data, while a repair option attempts to preserve games and personal content. Before selecting one, read the current option’s description and preserve important local data. See Valve’s SteamOS recovery and troubleshooting guidance.
