To connect a controller to your Steam Deck wirelessly, put it in pairing mode, then open Settings > Bluetooth, turn Bluetooth on, and select the controller. For a wired connection, plug a compatible USB controller into a USB-C dock or hub connected to the Deck. If pairing fails, use the checks below to find the cause.
How do I connect a controller to my Steam Deck?
Pair it over Bluetooth
- Put the controller into pairing mode. The button combination depends on the model, so check the controller maker’s instructions.
- On the Steam Deck, open Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
- Select the controller when it appears in the device list and follow any on-screen prompts.
Valve’s Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide says, “To pair a Bluetooth device, make sure that it is in pairing mode.”

Connect it with USB
For wired play, connect a compatible USB controller through a USB-C dock or hub attached to the Deck. The exact port or adapter depends on the controller and dock. Valve describes USB peripherals as commonly used with the Deck, but that general guidance does not guarantee every controller, cable, and hub combination will work.

Bluetooth or wired USB: which should you use?
| Connection | What it involves | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | Pair the controller in SteamOS Bluetooth settings; no controller cable is needed. | You want a wireless setup and the controller’s Bluetooth connection is reliable nearby. |
| Wired USB | Connect the controller through a compatible USB-C dock or hub. | You want to avoid Bluetooth pairing or troubleshoot a wireless connection. |
Valve’s documentation does not establish a universal latency or compatibility winner across controller models. Choose based on the controller and accessories you have, and check the controller maker’s current instructions and firmware information if needed.

Why won’t my Steam Deck find my controller?
Try these checks in order when the controller is missing from the Bluetooth device list or a saved connection will not work:
- Confirm that the controller is in pairing mode. Pairing button combinations vary by model.
- In Settings > Bluetooth, turn on Show all devices and look for the controller again.
- If the controller was paired before but will not reconnect, forget it in the Bluetooth settings and pair it again.
- Check for and install available controller firmware updates. Valve notes that many Xbox controllers need a firmware update to work as expected with Steam Deck; this is not a guarantee that every issue is firmware-related.
What if the controller connects but lags or disconnects?
Bluetooth performance can be affected by radio interference. Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing nearby interference and improving the connection path. Try the following:

- Move the Deck farther from routers and devices using the 2.4 GHz band.
- Move high-bandwidth USB 3 accessories away from the Deck.
How can I check whether Steam recognizes the controller?
- Open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs and press buttons or move sticks to see whether their input registers.
- If inputs work in the test but buttons behave incorrectly in one game, open that game’s Library details and select the gamepad icon to review or change its controller layout.
Steam Deck menu labels can change with SteamOS updates. If a label differs on your device, look for the corresponding Bluetooth or controller settings rather than assuming the controller itself is incompatible.
