Use Steam’s compatibility rating for Valve’s structured assessment of how a game works on Deck, then consult ProtonDB and other community reports for player experiences and specific problems. They answer different questions: a Valve badge is not a collection of player anecdotes, and a community report is not a controlled Valve review. Check the details and how recent they are before relying on either.
What Steam’s Deck compatibility rating tells you
Valve assigns one of four categories to games it has reviewed: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown. Ratings and compatibility details appear in the Steam store and library for reviewed titles. Valve describes Verified as working well out of the box, while Playable may require manual adjustments. Unsupported means the game currently does not function on Steam Deck. Unknown means Valve has not checked it yet.

Valve’s Verified criteria are about using the game on the device, not simply whether it launches. The review covers input, display, seamlessness, and system support. In its Steamworks compatibility documentation, Valve specifies a default configuration playable at 30 fps at 800p for Deck. Criteria also address controller usability, appropriate input icons and text entry, readable text at supported Deck resolutions, navigable launchers, and Proton and anti-cheat support where applicable.

Valve’s wording for Unknown is: “We haven’t checked this game for compatibility yet.” It does not mean Valve tested the game and found it broken. Valve says new games and updates arrive continually and that it continues adding Deck features and updating ratings as information changes. Its page describes the review effort as covering “tens of thousands” of titles, a qualitative statement rather than a dated exact count.

What ProtonDB and community reports add
ProtonDB describes itself as a crowdsourced Linux and Steam Deck game compatibility-reporting resource. Valve’s community compatibility reports wiki points readers to ProtonDB and describes finding reports by a game’s app ID. This is a different kind of evidence from Valve’s device review: reports let players share compatibility experiences that may explain how a game behaved in particular circumstances.
Read a report as an observation, not a promise that the same result applies to every Deck owner. The sources do not establish a universal sample-size threshold or guarantee that each report matches your game build, Proton version, or settings. Nor do they establish a single mandatory reporting standard across community sites. A report is more useful when it identifies the game and relevant conditions; an isolated anecdote should not become a universal verdict.

How to check a game before playing or buying
- Open the Steam store page or your Steam library. Find the Deck compatibility category and open its details. Use the explanation to see which device criteria are relevant, rather than relying on the badge alone.
- Interpret Unknown correctly. It means Valve has not completed a compatibility check, not that the game failed one. Look for other evidence if you need to decide whether to play or buy.
- Search ProtonDB for the game. Read the reports themselves, noting their age and any stated game, Proton, or settings context. The cited sources do not set a universal cutoff for what counts as recent.
- Compare like with like if accounts conflict. Identify whether each source concerns launch, controls, display, or another issue. Give more weight to specific, current evidence than to a broad or context-free claim; Valve documents its review criteria and ongoing retesting as software changes.
How the sources differ
| Source | Who provides it | What it tells you | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck compatibility rating | Valve | A defined category and, for reviewed games, details tied to Valve’s Deck usability criteria. | The category and the specific compatibility details; Unknown means not checked. |
| ProtonDB | Community contributors | Crowdsourced Linux and Steam Deck compatibility reports. | Report age and stated circumstances; the resource does not guarantee a match to your current game or software versions. |
| Other community reports | Users on community reporting sites | Individual experiences, where provided. | Specificity, context, and recency; no shared authoritative reporting standard is established by the cited sources. |
Why compatibility information can change
Valve says it updates ratings as it adds Deck features and as information changes. Its compatibility documentation also recognizes that changes to a game or Proton can prompt retesting. That makes a report’s date and version context material: a past failure may not describe the current experience, and a past success may not guarantee it. When evidence differs, compare its age and the exact issue described instead of treating one source as permanently definitive.

Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
