Valve’s October 5, 2026 Steam Client Preview/Beta update adds a recovery page to the Steam Input configurator when it cannot load a configuration file stored on disk. It also clarifies cloud-sync status and lets users continue into the configurator without waiting at that step. The announcement describes a Preview/Beta release; it does not establish a stable-channel rollout.
What the Steam Input landing page does
When the configurator cannot load a configuration file from the device, it now presents a landing page with an option to choose a new configuration. Valve said the missing-file situation was one cause of users seeing a blank configurator. In its Steam Beta Client Update: October 5th, Valve described the change as: “Added a landing page to the configurator when no file on disk could be loaded and give you the option to select a new configuration.”

This is a recovery path for a specific failure case, not a claim that every blank configurator issue is fixed. Valve also identified a broken layout that placed information offscreen as another common cause of a blank configuration experience.

The configurator now makes cloud-sync status clearer and offers a way to skip that step and continue into the configurator. The same update fixes pairing for the original 2015 Steam Controller and corrects Nintendo Switch controller glyphs in Heavy Rain.
