These formats differ in who makes the content, how long it lasts, and what permission is required.
What does a pop-culture collaboration in a game look like?
A crossover is not just a character skin. Depending on the game and agreement, it may change the setting, add music or activities, bring a public figure into the game world, or let creators make experiences based on an existing franchise.

- Cosmetics or appearances: a character, artist, outfit, or other recognizable element appears in a game.
- Themed events and locations: a season or event alters parts of the map, activities, or loot.
- Music and rhythm play: licensed songs or performances become part of an interactive experience.
- Creator-built worlds: eligible creators make experiences using intellectual property (IP) under a formal license.
Those categories can overlap, but a temporary publisher-led event is not the same thing as a licensing system that lets outside creators build and publish their own experiences.

Epic Games described Fortnite Battle Royale’s Chapter 2 Remix as a season that brought back an earlier island and introduced weekly location and loot drops inspired by past gameplay and music icons. In Epic’s November 1, 2024 announcement, Snoop Dogg was placed at the Agency, Eminem at the Grotto, and Ice Spice at Shark Island. The season’s finale was framed as a tribute to Juice WRLD.

Can Roblox creators make games with movie or anime characters?
Roblox announced a licensing platform in July 2025 that gives eligible creators a route to request permission to use selected IP in experiences. At launch, Roblox named Lionsgate, Netflix, Sega, and Kodansha as partners and said seven properties were available for licensed use: Stranger Things, Squid Game, Twilight, Saw, Divergent, Now You See Me, and Like a Dragon. This is a launch-time catalog, not a guarantee that every property remains available or that any creator can use it without approval.

- For 1 to 4 players
- Ages 13+
- About 45 minutes per player
- A cooperative board game
- Based on the hit video game
The process is conditional. Roblox says creators can browse the catalog and apply; rights holders can approve or decline a request. Creator Hub describes selecting an experience, reviewing the license terms and content standards, and submitting a pitch. Rights holders can set terms, scan for use of their IP, and collect revenue shares. Check the Roblox Creator Hub licensing documentation for current catalog entries, eligibility, and application requirements.
Roblox reported 97.8 million average daily active users as of Q1 2025 in its July 2025 announcement. That is a platform-wide figure, not a count of people who played a particular licensed experience. Likewise, Roblox’s reported $923 million in creator earnings refers to all platform creators in calendar year 2024, up from $741 million in 2023; it does not describe earnings from licensed collaborations alone. How do Fortnite creator licenses differ from an in-game crossover?
Epic also publishes partner-specific licensing terms for creators making Fortnite Creative or Unreal Editor for Fortnite content. Its fee schedule has listed programs involving LEGO, Netflix’s Squid Game, Paramount’s TMNT, and Skybound’s The Walking Dead Universe, with different shares of creator engagement payouts. These are creator-facing rules for licensed templates, not terms that can be assumed for every Fortnite event or cosmetic purchase. The live schedule and agreements should be checked for current partner terms: Epic’s IP partner fee schedule.
Epic’s Fortnite Developer Rules direct creators using third-party IP to follow the relevant license agreement and brand rules. Permission and economics therefore depend on the specific partner; one partner’s payout share should not be generalized to another.

How should players compare these collaborations?
| Question | Seasonal event or artist crossover | Licensed creator experience |
|---|---|---|
| What changes? | May add artists, characters, music, themed locations, or scheduled activities. | A creator builds an experience using selected IP under license. |
| Who makes it? | Typically the game publisher and rights holder organize the event. | Eligible third-party creators apply to use listed IP; rights holders review requests. |
| How long does it last? | May have a fixed event window, as Chapter 2 Remix did. | Availability depends on the license and platform status; the cited materials do not establish a standard duration. |
| What permissions or terms apply? | Terms depend on the specific collaboration. | Catalog eligibility, approval, content standards, brand rules, and revenue-share terms may apply. |
For players, the practical distinction is whether they are looking for a scheduled event or an experience that creators can build under an ongoing licensing framework. For creators, the key question is not simply whether a franchise appears on a platform, but whether the relevant license is open, what it permits, and what review and payment terms apply.

What the platform numbers do—and do not—show
Roblox said it had 79.5 million daily active users as of June 30, 2024, in its September 2024 RDC announcement. Its later figure of 97.8 million average daily active users was for Q1 2025. Both are Roblox-reported, platform-wide measures; neither establishes the reach or impact of an individual collaboration. Roblox’s RDC 2024 announcement
These examples establish that games can serve as interactive venues for entertainment franchises and music, and that some platforms are formalizing creator access to licensed IP. They do not show that every game is adopting the approach or measure its cultural or commercial effect. Platform catalogs and partner terms can change, so current listings and rules matter more than a launch announcement when deciding what is available now.
