On the current Steam Deck, signing in brings up your library, but each game’s playability depends on its compatibility and how well it works on a handheld.
Will your Steam library work on Steam Deck 2?
There is no confirmed game-by-game compatibility information for Steam Deck 2 in the Valve materials cited here. That means current Steam Deck ratings cannot be treated as a promise about a successor: Valve has not said that ratings will transfer unchanged or that every game in your library will run.

For context, Valve says that on the current Steam Deck, owned games appear after you sign in. Its Steamworks documentation describes the library on Steam Deck and Steam Machine as an extension of a user’s existing library. That statement names those current devices; it does not establish how Steam Deck 2 will handle the library. Valve’s Steam Deck and Steam Machine Compatibility Review explains the current account-library behavior.
A library appearing on a device is not the same as every game working well on it. SteamOS differs from the operating system on a typical Windows desktop. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer allows many games to run without developers porting them, but individual games and required components still need to function correctly. Valve’s Steam Deck Software page describes SteamOS, Proton, and the current Deck library experience.

What the current Steam Deck compatibility labels mean
Valve assigns current Steam Deck games one of four labels. These describe their status on the current Deck, not a confirmed Steam Deck 2 rating system.
| Label | What Valve says it means | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” | It meets Valve’s current out-of-the-box target for the Deck. |
| Playable | The game may require some manual tweaking by the user to play. | You might need to choose a community controller layout or use the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. |
| Unsupported | The game is currently not functional on Steam Deck. | Valve’s current review does not consider it playable on the Deck. |
| Unknown | Valve has not checked the game for compatibility yet. | The label is not a verdict that the game works or fails. |
Valve’s Steam Deck Verified page defines these categories and explains the review criteria. A Verified label is useful evidence about the current Deck, but it does not establish compatibility with future hardware.

Why a game’s rating involves more than whether it launches
Valve’s compatibility review considers both system support and handheld usability. A game can launch yet still be awkward to play if its controls, menus, text, or launcher do not work well on the device.
- Controls: Can the game be played with the built-in controller, and are its input prompts and controls usable?
- Display and text: Does the game support the Deck’s display resolution, with interface elements and text that remain legible?
- Launchers: Can you navigate any launcher on the handheld, including when it requires touchscreen input?
- Proton and middleware: Do the game and its required components work through Proton? Valve’s checks include middleware such as anti-cheat.
- Extra setup: Does the game need manual configuration, or is it currently nonfunctional on the Deck?
These are the current Deck program’s criteria, not a published checklist or compatibility guarantee for Steam Deck 2. Valve also says reviews are ongoing as games, game updates, and Deck features change. Check a game’s current Steam store or library listing rather than relying on an old rating.

How to check the games you care about now
- Open the game’s current Steam store or library listing. Look for its Steam Deck compatibility rating.
- Read the label as a current-Deck assessment. Verified indicates an out-of-the-box experience target; Playable can involve adjustments; Unsupported means currently not functional on the Deck; Unknown means it has not been checked.
- Look at the details that matter for your game. Consider controller support, readable text, launcher interaction, and any Proton or anti-cheat dependencies. These factors can matter even if a game launches.
- Recheck when you are making a purchase or planning to play. Valve’s reviews can change as games and Deck features are updated.
This helps assess a title on today’s Deck. It cannot tell you whether that title will work on Steam Deck 2 until Valve publishes information about the successor.

A GamesRadar report dated April 27, 2026, said Valve coder Pierre-Loup Griffais told IGN that work on Steam Deck 2 was underway; the report also said Valve had not announced a release window at that time. That is secondary reporting about development status, not a technical statement about game compatibility. Read the GamesRadar report.
