Steam’s October 7, 2026 Client Beta removes a setup step for Linux users: add a Windows executable as a non-Steam game, and Steam now selects Proton by default. You no longer have to choose a compatibility tool manually for that kind of entry—but the change does not guarantee that the program will work.
What the October 7 Beta changes
The Steam Client Beta notes say: “Windows binaries registered as non-steam games will now run in Proton by default.” The change applies when a Windows binary has been registered in Steam as a non-Steam game. It changes Steam’s default compatibility-tool choice for that entry; it does not convert the program into native Linux software.

How to run a Windows executable through Steam
On SteamOS or desktop Linux, add the Windows executable as a non-Steam game in Steam. With this Beta behavior, Steam selects Proton automatically for the registered Windows binary. The practical improvement is that you can skip manually choosing a compatibility tool for that entry.
The update is software-only: it is relevant to Steam Deck users in SteamOS Gaming Mode and to people using the Steam client on desktop Linux. A Steam Deck is not required.

What Proton does—and what it does not
ValveSoftware describes Proton as “a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system.” Proton is Wine-based compatibility software integrated with Steam, not a native Linux version of an app. Valve recommends using the version supplied through Steam. See the Proton repository documentation.
Automatic selection is not the same as confirmed compatibility. A program can still fail to launch or behave incorrectly because of its dependencies, DRM, anti-cheat, or other requirements. Valve’s Steam Play FAQ notes that some games with complex DRM or anti-cheat systems may be difficult or impossible to support; that is a general limitation, not a claim that every such title fails. Steam’s Linux games page likewise says Steam Play can potentially allow Windows-only games to work on Linux, not that all of them will.
Which launch path applies?
| What you add or launch | Relevant path |
|---|---|
| Windows binary registered as a non-Steam game | The Beta selects Proton by default. |
| A game or app with a native Linux build | Use the Linux build and its normal Steam launch path rather than treating it as a Windows executable. |
| A Windows entry that needs a different compatibility tool | Choose a compatibility tool manually if the default does not suit that program. |
These are different launch paths, not a speed ranking. The release note changes the default selection for registered Windows binaries; it does not report a performance improvement.

Steam has made other interface changes to reduce compatibility-tool setup friction: an earlier Beta made the tool selector always visible and put the recommended option at the top as “Default.” That selector change is distinct from the October 7 behavior, which specifically sets Proton as the default for registered Windows binaries.

Valve’s original 2018 Steam Play announcement described Proton as a modified distribution of Wine with additional components and Steam client integration. It discussed features including Direct3D 11 and 12 translation through Vulkan, Steamworks and OpenVR support, fullscreen improvements, controller support, and multi-threaded performance work. Those details describe the initial effort, not a current component list or evidence of a performance gain from this Beta change. Read the 2018 Steam Play announcement for that historical context.
