Valve’s October 5, 2026 Steam Client update is for the Preview/Beta channel, not a confirmed stable-client release. Its most narrowly targeted general fix addresses cases where older CPUs could cause Steam to hang or crash when starting downloads for games with many identical files. The update also adjusts Steam Input, fixes desktop shortcut behavior, and improves a Remote Play control.

Older-CPU download-start crashes

Valve says it fixed cases in which users with older CPUs could encounter a client hang or crash when starting downloads for games with many identical files. The note does not identify processor models or operating systems, and it does not claim faster downloads or a general performance improvement.

Desktop shortcuts and Big Picture typing

The update fixes desktop shortcuts that used the default launch option instead of the option saved for the game. It also fixes some missed onscreen-keyboard presses during dual-trackpad typing in Big Picture Mode, including interaction with the diacritic options menu while typing.

Steam Input configurator and controller fixes

  • If the configurator cannot load a file from disk, it now provides a landing page where users can choose a new configuration. Valve identifies this as one cause of a blank configurator.
  • The configurator’s cloud-sync status display is improved, and users can skip that step and continue into the configurator. Valve says a broken layout and information appearing offscreen were another common cause of a blank configuration.
  • Pairing the 2015 Steam Controller is fixed.
  • Switch controller glyphs are fixed in Heavy Rain.

Remote Play bitrate control

The bitrate adjustment option in Remote Play’s network-health dialog should now behave more intuitively. Valve does not describe a numerical bitrate change or promise a particular streaming-quality result.

How to opt in to the Steam Client beta

The beta is optional. Valve’s Steam Client beta participation instructions give separate routes for desktop Steam, Steam Deck, and Big Picture Mode. Restart Steam after changing the channel.
