If State of Decay 2 co-op will not connect, first check Xbox service status, enable Multiplayer in the game’s Settings, and confirm every player is signed into an Xbox account. If a PC player cannot host, update Gaming Services through Microsoft Store and restart the PC. The game supports cross-play across platforms and storefronts, but its peer-to-peer sessions depend on the host’s connection.
Check these prerequisites first
- Check Xbox service status. The official State of Decay multiplayer support page recommends checking Xbox services before changing local settings. If services are having an outage, a local settings change may not help.
- Turn on Multiplayer in State of Decay 2. Open the game’s Settings and make sure Multiplayer is enabled.
- Sign in to an Xbox account on every platform. Cross-play works across platforms and storefronts through Xbox accounts. Exchange Xbox gamertags so you can find and invite one another.
Fix PC hosting problems
If a PC player cannot host a session, update Gaming Services using the current official PC-specific fix:

- Open Microsoft Store.

- When updates finish, restart the PC and try hosting again.

Check who is hosting
State of Decay 2 uses peer-to-peer multiplayer. Undead Labs’ support page explains that session quality depends on the host’s internet connection and that guests are tethered, so they cannot stray too far from the host.

If a session fails or is unstable, try having the other player host and compare the result. This is a diagnostic experiment based on the host-dependent connection model, not a guaranteed fix. If the session works only with one host, that points toward a difference in the hosting setup or connection rather than proving a specific cause.
Compare the players’ setup
- Are both players signed into the Xbox accounts they use for the game?
- Is Multiplayer enabled for both players?
- Are you using the right gamertags, and has the invite been sent through an available platform feature?
- Who is hosting, and does the session behave differently when the host changes?
- If a PC player is hosting, have they updated Gaming Services and restarted?
- Are Xbox services available?
Keep guests near the host
Once connected, a guest who moves too far from the host can run into the game’s tether restriction. Stay within the host’s permitted range; the tether is a game rule, not evidence by itself that matchmaking or sign-in has failed.

Know the co-op player limit
A session supports one host and up to three guest players, for four players total. This capacity is listed by Undead Labs support and the Xbox product page.

The official support page explains how to find the installed game version and points players to the State of Decay Discord and subreddit for further discussion. It also says that direct support ticket intake is closed. The page notes that State of Decay 2 received its final content update in October 2024, so do not assume a new game update or direct ticket response will address a connection issue.

An older Undead Labs support article from January 2019 listed internet connectivity, host settings, service status, avoiding excessive Alt+Tab use on PC, and investigating router settings or third-party antivirus as possible troubleshooting areas: current official multiplayer support page. Treat those older suggestions as secondary possibilities rather than guaranteed or current fixes. In particular, the old article’s Xbox Live Gold requirement for Xbox One may no longer reflect current subscription policy; check the current Xbox requirements for your platform and region before paying for a subscription.
The official sources do not establish whether there is a live Xbox service incident or a newly widespread multiplayer fault. Check Xbox status and current community reports when troubleshooting.
