Even once the monthly chart is consistent, a change in share does not show that people switched browsers. Statcounter measures page views recorded across its network, not unique people, browser installations, active-user totals or switching behavior.
How does Statcounter calculate browser market share?
Statcounter says its tracking code is installed on more than 1 million sites worldwide and that it analyzes more than 3 billion page views per month. Its methodology FAQ says the service records page views and analyzes the browser and operating system used. It publishes data as recorded without artificial weighting, removes bot activity and makes a small adjustment to browser statistics for Chrome prerendering.

Statcounter describes its approach this way: “We provide independent, unbiased stats on internet usage trends.” That is the service’s own characterization, not an independent assessment of its accuracy. Its FAQ also advises users to judge whether the methodology suits their purpose and acknowledges that no statistics service is perfect.
Does Statcounter’s desktop category include laptops?
Yes. Statcounter groups laptops and desktop machines in its desktop category because, according to its FAQ, a browser’s user-agent does not provide enough information to distinguish them. These figures are worldwide desktop (including laptops) page-view shares; they are not all-device or country-specific shares.

Why can a published figure change?
Statcounter says figures may be corrected during a 45-day quality-assurance period after first publication. That revision window is one reason to check the tracker’s reporting month and current values before citing a figure. For a sound month-to-month comparison, use the same source, geography, device category and chart type for both months.
