If the Windows 11 Start menu looks opaque, first check Settings > Personalization > Colors > Transparency effects. Windows describes this as a subtle effect, not a strong glass appearance: Microsoft says some window backgrounds and surfaces appear “slightly transparent with an acrylic blur.” If the switch is already on, compare other Windows surfaces and check whether power saver or Remote Desktop is involved before attempting repairs.
1. Turn on the Windows transparency setting
Open Settings > Personalization > Colors and switch on Transparency effects. Microsoft’s Windows color settings guidance describes the effect as slight transparency with acrylic blur on some backgrounds and surfaces.

You can also check the corresponding control at Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects. If transparency is disabled there, turn it on and check the Start menu again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows does not document a built-in slider for increasing the effect’s strength. An enabled switch therefore does not guarantee a highly transparent or glass-like Start menu.

2. Find out whether the issue affects only Start
With the setting on, compare the Start menu with other Windows surfaces that use transparency. If several surfaces also look opaque, investigate a system-wide setting or condition. If other surfaces show the effect but Start does not, keep troubleshooting focused on Start rather than assuming Windows transparency is disabled everywhere.
Check power saver and Remote Desktop
Microsoft’s Terminal FAQ notes that Acrylic can be disabled while a laptop is in power saver mode or when accessing a machine through Remote Desktop. These are useful diagnostic clues, but the FAQ discusses Acrylic behavior in its documented context; it does not establish that either condition explains every Start menu transparency problem. If applicable, exit power saver or check the desktop locally, then compare the appearance.
3. Check update timing and recent changes
Note whether the symptom began after a Windows update or a configuration change. Microsoft’s Start menu troubleshooting guidance recommends checking update history and considering recent registry or folder changes, as well as Group Policy or mobile-device-management changes. These checks matter especially if the device is managed or Start has other problems; the guidance addresses Start app errors and deployment issues, not a missing visual effect by itself.

4. Separate a visual issue from a broken Start menu
If Start opens and works normally but only looks opaque, package repair and Safe Mode are not sensible first steps for a cosmetic complaint. If Start itself fails to open or behaves incorrectly, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking its installation and activation. It warns that trying to install missing Start AppX files is unsupported and often problematic.
For a running-but-failing Start app, Microsoft suggests testing in Safe Mode or using msconfig to help eliminate third-party software and drivers. Use those paths for broader Start failures, not simply because the menu lacks a pronounced blur.
5. Apply known Windows issues only when the device matches
Historical Insider report
Windows Insider Preview Build 25145 notes from June 22, 2022 recorded reports of Mica and Acrylic rendering incorrectly on surfaces including Start. That is historical evidence from an Insider build, not proof of a current defect in ordinary stable Windows 11 installations.

Managed-device XAML issue
Microsoft’s KB5072911 support notice describes a XAML-dependent app issue affecting a limited number of managed Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 environments. Microsoft said it was very unlikely on individual personal devices and that updates released June 23, 2026 began rolling out a resolution. Consider this only if the device is managed and Start or other XAML-dependent apps also fail; it is not a general explanation for an opaque Start menu.
What not to try as a universal fix
There is no established single cause or guaranteed repair for every Start menu transparency complaint. Do not assume a registry edit, Start package reinstall, graphics-driver update, or system-repair command will fix a visual-only issue. Choose a more invasive step only when the machine’s specific symptoms point to it and you can follow guidance appropriate to that failure.
Third-party Windows styling tools are a separate customization option, not a proven repair for the built-in transparency control. Verify compatibility and safety information before using any such tool.
