Evidence from a workplace study found increased daily physical activity after treadmill workstations were introduced, but it does not show that every walking pad will make every user fitter. Walking is one way to contribute physical activity; a pad alone is not a complete fitness plan.
What does the evidence actually show?
A 2014 study followed volunteers at a financial-services company for 12 months after they were given access to treadmill workstations. The workstations could be set from 0 to 2 mph, and the study abstract reports that daily total physical activity increased after their adoption. The PLOS ONE study is evidence that walking workstations can add activity in that workplace setting—not proof of a particular fitness outcome for every person or every consumer device. The World Health Organization’s physical-activity and sedentary-behaviour guideline offers evidence-based recommendations on activity frequency, intensity, and duration for health benefits, as well as guidance on sedentary behaviour. It does not say that buying a walking pad is necessary or sufficient to meet those needs.
What can a walking pad contribute?
A walking pad can make it easier to walk at home or during some desk work, using time that might otherwise be spent sitting. That is a practical route to more movement, not a guarantee of weight loss, a specific number of calories burned, or a defined improvement in fitness. Those outcomes are not established by the sources cited here.

Walking pads are generally compact, flat treadmills intended for walking rather than running. Novant Health’s walking-pad guidance discusses their use while working; treat that as practical context, not as controlled evidence that a particular model produces a health result.
What to check before choosing one
Start with how you intend to use the machine. A pad for slow walking during desk work may not suit someone seeking faster walking or jogging. Compare the specifications against your space, stride, and routine rather than assuming that all compact treadmills do the same job.
- Speed range and intended use: Check whether the unit is designed for walking and whether its range fits your intended pace.
- Belt dimensions: Make sure the walking surface works for your stride.
- Weight capacity and handrail: Check the stated capacity and whether the handrail configuration suits your needs.
- Footprint and storage: Consider the space required in use and where the unit will go when not in use.
- Noise and tracking: These can matter in a shared room or desk setup; check the specific product’s details.
TIME’s product-selection discussion also identifies capacity, belt width, speed and functionality, noise, and tracking as comparison points. It is selection guidance, not a test of two products.

A product example—and what it does not prove
WalkingPad’s official catalog currently lists the C2 Foldable Walking Treadmill with a 1–4 mph speed range, a stated maximum user weight of 220 lb, and dimensions of 32.5 × 20.4 × 5.4 inches. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements; check the official catalog for the current listing. Its listed range differs from the 0–2 mph workstations in the 2014 study, so the study’s result should not be treated as a test or endorsement of the C2.
About the two-product test in the original title
No model names, test protocol, observations, or results are available for the claimed two-product comparison. It would therefore be misleading to present first-person findings, name a winner, or describe comfort, noise, or performance as tested. To make that comparison useful, an actual test would need to identify both models and describe the duration and conditions, measured activity, comfort, noise, and drawbacks.
