There is no universal winner among Starlink, Hughesnet, and Viasat: the best choice depends on which plans are actually offered at your address, their full cost, and how each handles speed and data during busy periods. Check local eligibility first, then compare the address-specific broadband labels and checkout terms—not just advertised maximum speeds or a provider’s starting price.

Which satellite internet services should you compare?

For US residential service, the main alternatives covered here are Starlink, Hughesnet, and Viasat. Their national plan pages are useful starting points, but they do not establish that every plan, price, or speed tier is available at every home. The figures below are a dated snapshot of provider information; offers and terms can change.

Service Published plan information What to verify locally
Starlink Its US residential plan page lists 100 Mbps for $55 per month, 200 Mbps for $85 per month, and Residential Max for $130 per month. The 100 and 200 Mbps tiers are available only in select areas; Max is described as the highest-priority residential option. Confirm the plan offered at your address, equipment terms, and current price. Starlink says the 100 and 200 Mbps plans are limited to those download speeds; actual service can be slower.
Hughesnet Its home plan page advertises speeds up to 100 Mbps and offers Fusion, which combines satellite and wireless technologies for a more responsive experience. Plan availability varies by location. Get the local broadband label and quote, including equipment, installation, fees, and data terms.
Viasat Essentials includes 150 GB of high-speed data followed by unlimited standard data. Unleashed lists unlimited high-speed data and advertised speeds of 25–150 Mbps in selected areas. The page shows starting prices of $99.99 per month after the initial promotion. Confirm the speed and price available at your address, the promotion’s duration, fees, and how network management may affect service.

Starlink’s listed prices and tiers come from its US residential plan page. Viasat’s plan page says its competitor comparison used public information as of April 23, 2026. Treat both as snapshots, not price guarantees. Hughesnet does not publish one national price in the cited home-plan material; it directs customers to check local offers.

How do you check coverage at your address?

A satellite’s footprint is not the same as a provider’s sellable service at a particular home. Address eligibility, local capacity, regulatory status, equipment placement, and plan availability can all matter.

#1 Best Overall
STARLINK Standard Kit AX 4 X Tri Band Wi-Fi System - High-Speed, Low-Latency V4 Internet Band AC Wi-Fi Router and Satellite Dish System – High-Speed Portable Internet – White
  • Starlink provides reliable high-speed, low-latency, internet wherever you live
  • Service plan required, activate STARLINK by selecting a service plan that is customized to meet your personal needs
  • Select from plans suited for households or travel
  • Get online in minutes, set up STARLINK with just 2-steps, plug it in and point at the sky
  • STARLINK comes with everything needed to get online including a kickstand, gen 3-router, cables and power supply
  • Starlink: Use its availability map’s address lookup. The map notes that some areas may be pending coverage or regulatory approval.
  • Hughesnet: The provider says it serves the contiguous United States, Puerto Rico, and Alaska where a home has a clear view of the southern sky, but still requires an address check for plans.
  • Viasat: Availability and speeds vary; check the local offer rather than assuming a national plan description applies.

Before ordering, check whether trees, buildings, roof layout, or other obstructions could interfere with the required view of the sky, and whether installation is feasible at the property. If fiber, cable, or fixed wireless is available, compare it too: a local terrestrial option may offer better value, but these sources do not establish which providers serve any particular address.

What do the speed and latency claims mean?

Advertised speeds are not measured guarantees. Starlink’s residential page lists 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps tiers with those download-speed limits, while its Max tier is differentiated by priority. Its specification language says actual speeds vary by location, time, and plan and may be lower during periods of high use. Hughesnet advertises up to 100 Mbps. Viasat advertises up to 25–150 Mbps in selected areas and says those speeds are not guaranteed.

These figures are not directly comparable as if they were results from one test: they describe different plan structures, locations, and conditions. Upload speed, peak-time performance, and the plan’s network-management policy also matter. Ask providers for the local plan’s advertised download and upload speeds and read the broadband label before deciding.

Why satellite architecture matters—but does not pick a winner

The Federal Communications Commission distinguishes Starlink’s non-geostationary constellation from the geostationary high-throughput satellites Hughes/EchoStar and Viasat use over North America. Orbital distance and network design affect latency, which can matter for video calls, online games, and other interactive tasks. Architecture alone does not predict the performance a particular household will receive.

The FCC’s 2026 satellite-broadband report says fewer than half of satellite users experienced 100/20 Mbps in 2025. It describes typical satellite user download speeds of 45–280 Mbps and uploads of 10–30 Mbps, while noting that results depend on location, time, plan, and congestion. Those are sector-wide figures, not a current head-to-head ranking of Starlink, Hughesnet, and Viasat.

What is different about Hughesnet Fusion?

Fusion is not simply another name for every Hughesnet plan. Hughesnet describes it as combining satellite and wireless technologies to reduce latency and improve responsiveness. That hybrid design may be relevant if responsiveness is important, but the published description does not establish a guaranteed latency or performance result for a particular address.

How do the data policies compare?

“Unlimited” does not necessarily mean the same experience at all times. Look for the amount of high-speed or priority data, what happens after it is used, and whether congestion can change a connection’s priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Viasat Essentials: Includes 150 GB of high-speed data, followed by unlimited standard data. The provider says standard data may be slower during congestion.
  • Viasat Unleashed: Lists unlimited high-speed data, but its terms retain network management and allow possible priority reduction related to congestion.
  • Hughesnet: Distinguishes priority data from unlimited standard data. Check the specific plan’s allowance and what happens after priority data is used.
  • Starlink: The cited residential plan information differentiates tiers by speed limits and priority; confirm the terms shown for the exact plan offered to you.

For a household that regularly downloads large files or has many simultaneous users, the allowance and post-allowance treatment may matter as much as the headline speed. For video calls or gaming, ask about latency and peak-time network management rather than relying on a download-speed maximum.

How should you compare the total cost?

A monthly starting price is not the full cost of service. Compare the same items for each address-specific offer, and use the regular price after any promotion when estimating ongoing expense.

Hughesnet says its FCC broadband labels show plan data, speeds, and fees; Viasat says it participates in the Broadband Consumer Label program. Review the label for the exact plan and compare it with the final checkout total. Do not treat a national “starting at” price as an address-specific quote.

Which service fits your household?

Use this order when two or more providers say your address is eligible:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm availability and installation feasibility. Verify the exact address, offered plan, sky view, and installation arrangements.
  2. Compare the performance you need. Review download and upload figures, latency information, peak-time priority, and congestion terms.
  3. Check data treatment. Identify any high-speed or priority allowance and the policy that applies after it.
  4. Calculate the full cost. Include the recurring standard rate, hardware, installation, taxes, and fees.
  5. Check flexibility. Read service-term, pause or mobility, cancellation, and refund provisions that apply to the offer.
  6. Match the plan to your use. Interactive calls and gaming put a premium on responsiveness; heavy downloads and many simultaneous users make throughput and priority more important. Basic browsing and streaming may be workable on a lower tier, depending on the address and household demands.

Starlink is often the first service to compare when higher advertised speeds and lower latency are priorities, but local capacity, eligibility, price, and available alternatives can change the decision. Hughesnet Fusion’s hybrid approach and the distinct data terms on Viasat plans are reasons to compare the actual local offers rather than dismissing either provider based on a generic label like “satellite internet.”
