Start with the status shown in the Starlink app. Disconnected usually means your phone cannot reach the Starlink router; Searching, Obstructed, Overheated and similar alerts describe a dish, location or service problem. The correct fix depends on that distinction. Check power and cables, confirm a clear sky view with the app, allow the required connection time, and use the hardware-specific reset procedure only when the router model matches. If the app still reports Searching or hardware trouble after these checks, submit a support ticket from the app.
First, identify what is actually offline
There are two different failures that look similar:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Your phone cannot reach the Starlink router. The app may say Disconnected, and the Starlink Wi-Fi network may be missing or unreachable.
- Your phone reaches the router, but the dish has no internet. The app may show Searching, Obstructed, or another alert while you remain connected to Starlink Wi-Fi.
Connect your phone to the Starlink Wi-Fi network before reading the app status. If the app shows a cloud icon beside the network, select the network name and choose Local to connect directly to the router. A phone that cannot join Wi-Fi needs router and local-network checks; a connected phone with no internet needs dish, service or installation checks.
When the app says “Disconnected”
- Look at the router indicator, if your model has one, and verify that the router has power.
- Open your phone’s Wi-Fi settings and join the Starlink network. Temporarily disable any VPN, which can interfere with local discovery.
- Disconnect third-party routers or network equipment temporarily. Starlink says these devices can prevent the app from reaching Starlink hardware.
- If the phone still cannot connect, perform the factory reset specified for your exact router model, then join the network named STARLINK and complete Wi-Fi setup again.
Do not continue with dish-obstruction troubleshooting until the phone can communicate with the router. Conversely, if the phone is connected to Starlink Wi-Fi but websites do not load, treat the condition as an internet or dish outage rather than a Wi-Fi pairing problem.

What to do during first-time setup
A newly powered system can take up to 30 minutes to come online. Do not reboot repeatedly during that initial period unless the app specifically instructs you to.
- Open the Starlink app and run Check for Obstructions. Position the dish where the scan shows the clearest view of the sky.
- Confirm the power supply is connected and every connector is fully seated at the dish, router and any supplied power equipment.
- Leave the system powered and undisturbed for up to 30 minutes. The dish may be acquiring satellites or downloading software.
- If it remains offline after 30 minutes, reboot the equipment once and follow the status or alert displayed in the app.
If the location cannot provide a clear sky view, moving the dish is more effective than changing Wi-Fi settings. Use professional help for roof work, tree removal or any installation that cannot be performed safely from the ground.
Recovery steps for a sudden outage
For a system that worked previously and then stopped, open the app while connected to Starlink Wi-Fi and read its current alert. Starlink’s sudden-offline flow is intended for Starlink routers and equipment; procedures can differ when a third-party router is in use.
- Check whether the Wi-Fi network is present. If it is missing, power-cycle the router and inspect its indicator.
- Inspect every connection. Unplug the equipment before reseating connectors. Check the cable ends and the entire cable run for cuts, crushed sections, sharp kinks or exposed conductors.
- Check the installation. Look for new branches or leaves, debris, snow, ice or a dish that has shifted from its original position.
- Read the app’s network alert. A Starlink-specific outage notice should not be treated as proof that your dish or cable has failed.
When the app shows a cloud icon by the network, choose the network name and then Local. This gives the app a direct path to the router so you can inspect status even when the internet connection is down.

Interpret the Starlink app status
“Searching”
Searching means the dish is looking for satellites. For stationary service, verify that the equipment is at the service address listed on the account. Power-cycle it, then wait at least 30 minutes; the system may also be downloading an update. If it remains stuck on Searching after that wait, submit a support ticket in the app. An in-app ticket includes more system detail than a general description sent elsewhere.
“Obstructed”
This alert means part of the dish’s sky view is blocked, causing interruptions or preventing a stable connection. Open the app’s obstruction map and rescan the installation. Check for seasonal leaves, newly grown branches, debris, snow buildup and a mount or dish that has moved. Relocate the dish to a clearer position when possible. If you unplug it to move it, reconnect power and reboot after the relocation. Starlink’s stated remedy is to use Check for Obstructions to find a location on your property without obstructions and relocate the dish.
Raising the dish with a compatible mount or extended cable can help when the map shows that a higher position clears the obstruction. Confirm compatibility with your kit. Do not climb, cut trees or clear a dangerous roof area to solve an obstruction; hire a qualified installer when the work is hazardous.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Overheated”
The system has shut down because of high temperature. Move people and objects away from ventilation openings, protect the equipment from additional heat where your installation allows, and let it cool. It should reconnect after returning to a safe operating temperature. Do not enclose the router or cover the dish to force a faster restart.

“Unexpected location”
This alert points to a mismatch between the equipment’s current position and the service conditions on the account. Check the service address, registered country and plan rules in the app. Service may be restricted at the current location or under the selected plan. Changing a cable or resetting the router will not correct a location or plan restriction.
“Update required” or “Unsupported software”
Keep the system powered with a clear sky view so it can receive its over-the-air update. The app explains when the update can occur and may offer an option to apply it immediately. Interrupting power during the update can prolong the outage, so use the app’s instructions rather than repeatedly rebooting.
“Wi-Fi configuration required”
Follow the prompt in the app to configure the Starlink Wi-Fi network. Until that setup is completed, the dish and router may be powered but your devices will not have a usable wireless network.
“Router hardware issue”
Starlink directs customers to support for replacement options when the app reports a router hardware problem. Record the exact alert and submit it through the app instead of buying a generic router as a substitute.

Check power, cables and connectors safely
Power problems are easy to overlook. Confirm the outlet works, the power supply is firmly connected, and the router indicator changes when power is applied. With the equipment unplugged, inspect cable ends and the full cable length. Look for bent connector parts, crushed insulation, water intrusion, exposed wire or damage from doors, vehicles and pets.
- Reseat each connector until it is fully engaged; do not force a connector at an angle.
- Inspect any Ethernet adapter or extension already installed between Starlink components.
- Use cables designed for your Starlink kit. Compatibility varies by model, and a cable from another kit may not fit or perform correctly.
- Replace a cable only when visible damage, a relevant app alert or a confirmed cable fault justifies it. A replacement cable is not a universal fix for Searching, an obstruction or a service-address error.
The cable procedure in Starlink’s sudden-offline guidance does not apply unchanged to every product. In particular, identify whether you have a Starlink Mini and follow the instructions for that hardware before testing or replacing cables.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use router lights only for the matching model
Light colors are not universal across Starlink hardware. The following meanings come from the official Gen 3 Router Setup Guide (Standard Circular) and should not be applied to another router or dish model:
| Gen 3 router indication | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Flashing white | Trying to connect | Leave the system powered while it completes connection; check the app for a more specific alert. |
| Solid white | Connected to the internet | The router is online; investigate the individual device or Wi-Fi band if one device still cannot browse. |
| No light | No router power | Check the outlet, power supply and connectors. |
| Red | Not connected to the internet | Read the app status, inspect cables and installation conditions, and allow the required connection time. |
| Violet | Bypass mode | Review the network design and the instructions for leaving bypass mode if you need the Starlink router to provide Wi-Fi. |
The Gen 3 guide says a router that cannot connect within 20 minutes turns red and describes a reset-button factory reset. Resetting erases the router’s current configuration, so use that procedure only after confirming that the guide matches your hardware and that simpler power and Wi-Fi checks have failed.

When and how to reset the router
A reset is primarily a recovery step for a phone that cannot reach the router or for a confirmed configuration problem. It is not a remedy for a blocked sky view, overheating, an unexpected location or a regional service outage.
- Identify the router model from the device label or the app.
- Open the setup or support guide for that exact model and locate its reset method. Button locations and timing differ.
- Understand that a factory reset removes the current Wi-Fi configuration.
- After the reset completes, join the default STARLINK network when instructed and configure Wi-Fi again in the app.
Do not press a reset button solely because a different model’s guide says to. Hardware-specific instructions prevent an unnecessary loss of configuration and avoid applying the wrong light interpretation.
Match the remedy to the symptom
| Symptom | Most useful first checks | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Phone says Disconnected | Router power, join Starlink Wi-Fi, disable VPN, remove third-party networking equipment temporarily | The phone still cannot join after the model-specific reset |
| First setup never connects | Obstruction scan, secure connections, power on, wait up to 30 minutes | It remains offline after one reboot and the app’s guidance |
| Sudden total outage | App alerts, Wi-Fi availability, router light, cable inspection and installation check | The app reports a hardware fault or the outage persists without a clear cause |
| Searching | Verify service address, power-cycle, wait at least 30 minutes, allow for an update | It remains Searching after the wait and power cycle |
| Intermittent drops or Obstructed | Run the obstruction map; check new growth, snow, debris and dish movement | A safe, clear location is unavailable or the problem continues after relocation |
| Overheated | Let the system cool and improve ventilation where safe | The alert returns despite normal temperatures |
| Unexpected location | Check address, country and plan restrictions | The account details are correct but the alert remains |
When to contact Starlink support
Submit a support ticket in the Starlink app when the dish remains on Searching after a power cycle and the 30-minute waiting period, or when the app reports router hardware trouble. Include the exact status, alert text, router and dish model, whether the phone is connected locally, and what changed before the failure. The app can attach detailed system information automatically.

Support channels and phone availability vary by country and customer type. Some regional help pages describe phone-support trials for selected residential customers, but eligibility and hours can change. Use the current support page for your country instead of relying on a universal phone number.
Safety and installation boundaries
- Unplug equipment before inspecting or reseating cables.
- Do not work on a roof, climb a mast or cut branches unless you are qualified and the conditions are safe.
- Clear snow or debris only when it can be done without risking a fall or damaging the dish.
- Use a professional installer when a clearer mount position requires hazardous work.
- Keep the router ventilated; do not cover it or place it in a sealed cabinet.
Most cases can be narrowed down with the app, a power check, a cable inspection and an obstruction scan. The alert—not a generic reset or replacement purchase—should determine the next step.
