For a fixed home with demanding everyday internet use, Starlink Standard 4 X is the better starting point: Starlink recommends it for activities such as streaming, video calls, and gaming, and it includes a separate Router 3. Choose Starlink Mini if a smaller, lighter dish, portability, or lower power use matters more. Mini has Wi-Fi built into the dish and is positioned for basic internet applications. Those recommendations reflect Starlink’s specifications and product descriptions, not independent performance tests.
Starlink Standard vs. Mini: the main differences
Starlink’s current comparison is between Mini and Standard 4 X. Its naming notice distinguishes Standard 4, which is the Standard configuration with Router Mini, from Standard 4 X. Check the exact kit name and bundle on the order page when buying.

Which dish makes sense for your use?
Choose Standard 4 X for a home setup
Standard 4 X is the more suitable starting point if the dish will stay installed at a home and several people are likely to use the connection for higher-demand activities. Starlink describes it for high-demand everyday applications and includes Router 3, whose advertised coverage is larger than Mini’s. The coverage figures are manufacturer claims, not a promise of signal strength in a particular home; walls, layout, interference, and router placement affect actual Wi-Fi reach.

- Bundle Includes: STARLINK - Mini Kit AC Dual Band Wi-Fi System - White
- FAST SATELLITE INTERNET ANYWHERE: Access high-speed, low-latency internet even in and rural areas using the global Starlink satellite network. Designed by SpaceX, the Starlink Mini Kit provides dependable connectivity without wired infrastructure, making it ideal for travel, camping, work, off-grid cabins, RV setups, and locations with no traditional broadband options.
- COMPACT AND PORTABLE DESIGN: The Starlink Mini is small enough to carry in a backpack yet powerful enough for daily use. Its portable, all-in-one design includes an integrated Wi-Fi router, DC power input, and rugged housing suitable for on-the-go applications. Whether at a campsite, construction site, or temporary location, Starlink Mini offers quick deployment and reliable performance.
- EASY TWO-STEP SETUP: Get online in minutes—simply plug in the Mini, point it at the sky, and connect. The kit includes everything needed for installation, including a kickstand, pipe adapter, power cable, and power supply. Use the Starlink app to find a clear sky view, check obstructions, explore mounting options, and manage your Starlink account and hardware settings.
- BUILT-IN ROUTER WITH WI-FI 5: The Starlink Mini includes an integrated dual-band Wi-Fi 5 router for strong wireless coverage and stable speeds. A built-in ethernet port provides wired connectivity for routers, mesh systems, gaming devices, or network hardware. Average power consumption of 25–40 watts supports efficient operation in off-grid or mobile power setups.
Choose Mini for portability, size, or power constraints
Mini is less than half the dish weight of Standard 4 X before adding stands and cables: 1.10 kg compared with 2.9 kg. Its published average dish power use is also lower: 25–40 W on its specification sheet, versus 75–100 W for Standard 4 X. Those differences make Mini the more practical candidate when carrying weight, battery capacity, or limited DC power are important. Starlink’s separate power guide gives Mini’s average as 20–40 W and says consumption varies with temperature, location, and usage, so treat power figures as ranges rather than a fixed draw.
Do not choose based on a claimed speed winner
The available Starlink service specifications do not provide a controlled Mini-versus-Standard 4 X throughput comparison. They describe expected service speeds by plan category and note that actual performance varies with location, time of day, and plan. Starlink’s recommendation of Standard for demanding use is product positioning, not proof that the dish will deliver faster service at every address. Obstructions, service-plan eligibility, and network conditions also affect the experience.

Physical specifications and weather
Both are electronic phased-array antennas with a 110-degree field of view and software-assisted manual orientation. Starlink says its app guides alignment and that a correctly installed and aligned dish generally does not need readjustment. Both specification sheets list IP67 Type 4 protection, an operating temperature range of −30°C to 50°C, and operational wind speeds of 96 kph+ (60 mph+). Standard 4 X lists snow-melt capacity up to 40 mm/hour (1.5 in/hour); Mini lists up to 25 mm/hour (1 in/hour). These manufacturer specifications do not establish how either dish will perform at a particular site or in a specific storm.

Power, setup, and accessories
Mini power options
Mini’s specification sheet lists 12–48 V input and 60 W maximum. Starlink also specifies a USB Power Delivery source of at least 100 W at 20 V/5 A when using its USB-C-to-barrel-jack cable accessory. Do not assume that an arbitrary USB-C charger or power bank will work; confirm it meets that requirement and is compatible with the specified cable.

What comes in the kits
Starlink says both kits include a kickstand and can be used for quick deployment or permanent mounting. Its comparison describes a 15.2 m (50 ft) cable and says Mini includes a combined pipe adapter and flat mount, but package contents can change; verify the live order page for the exact kit. Standard 4 X specifications list the dish, kickstand, Router 3, a 15 m Starlink cable, AC cable, and power supply. Starlink’s shop lists a V5 Home Mount. The shop also identifies Router Mini as compatible with Starlink Mini and some other kits; that is a mesh-router accessory, separate from Mini’s built-in Wi-Fi. Confirm compatibility and mounting needs for your installation before ordering accessories.

The dish does not determine which service plan you can use. Starlink says Residential plans are for fixed land-based service at the registered address; use at another address or while traveling requires a Roam plan. Availability and pricing vary by region and address, so enter the service address on Starlink’s live page before budgeting.

Starlink’s legal service specifications report typical user downloads of 25–220 Mbps and uploads of 5–20 Mbps, while the same page gives different expected ranges by plan type. Starlink states that these speeds are not guaranteed and that uninterrupted service is not guaranteed. They are service-level figures, not a side-by-side hardware benchmark for Mini and Standard 4 X.
