How to research Granite Construction before investing
Start with company filings and results rather than relying on a project headline or a stock-screening summary. Granite’s investor-relations site displayed second-quarter 2026 earnings materials and October 2026 news as of October 5, 2026. Check the investor-relations site and SEC EDGAR filings for newer information before making a decision.
#1 Best Overall
Read the annual and quarterly filings
The latest annual filing identified here is Granite’s Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025, filed February 13, 2026. Use it to understand the business, audited financial statements, management’s discussion, legal proceedings, market risks, and risk factors. Then read the latest Form 10-Q and earnings release or presentation to see what has changed since year-end.
As you review reported results, compare revenue and operating income by segment, margins, cash from operations, capital spending, debt and liquidity, share count, dividends or repurchases, and any backlog or pipeline measures the company reports. Check each measure’s definition and reporting period; do not assume figures are directly comparable across periods or companies.

Understand how the business makes money
Granite describes itself as a U.S.-focused infrastructure company combining civil construction with construction materials. It serves public and private customers on work that includes roads and highways, transit, airports, bridges, dams, power, utilities, tunnels, and water. Projects can differ in size, duration, location, procurement method, and pricing structure.

That range of projects and materials operations can diversify business exposures, but it does not eliminate execution or market risk. In the current filing, examine contract estimates and costs, project schedules, claims and contingencies, labor availability, weather, raw-material prices and supply, customer funding, competitive bidding, and surety or bonding capacity. Granite identifies materials such as aggregate, cement, fuel, asphalt, natural gas, resin, and steel as relevant to its operations. Public infrastructure needs or announced spending do not automatically become Granite revenue or profit; project awards, funding, timing, and contract economics matter.
Compare guidance with reported results
Granite’s February 2026 results release gave company guidance for 2026 revenue of $4.9 billion to $5.1 billion and adjusted EBITDA margin of 12.0% to 13.0%. These are management’s forward-looking outlook figures, not realized results or guarantees. Compare later results with that outlook and read the assumptions and cautions in the release. Granite said it could not reconcile certain forward-looking non-GAAP measures without unreasonable efforts because some components are uncertain.
A project announcement is not a substitute for reported earnings. For example, Granite announced a $324.8 million Big Creek Tunnel project award on October 1, 2026, describing it as a joint-venture project. The award amount by itself does not establish Granite’s recognized revenue, share of project economics, or profit.

Test both sides of an investment thesis
A possible investment case might focus on infrastructure demand, a mix of project types, or Granite’s construction-materials operations. Test those ideas against the risks and disclosures in the latest filing: cost overruns or estimation changes, schedule delays, weather, labor and input costs, public-funding priorities, competition, contract profitability, and bonding constraints. These are questions to investigate, not predictions about what will happen.

Granite’s investor FAQ says the company does not offer a direct stock-purchase program to non-employees. Someone looking to buy GVA shares generally needs a brokerage account that supports the security.
Best Value
The FAQ separately identifies a dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP) through Computershare. A DRIP is not the same as a general direct-purchase plan for a new investor. Granite says existing shareholders whose shares are held in a brokerage account should contact their broker about cost basis. Confirm current DRIP eligibility and terms with Granite or Computershare before acting; the FAQ does not give an answer-specific update date.

- Choose an account. Open or use a brokerage account that permits trading NYSE-listed shares. In a cash account, the SEC says the investor pays the full purchase amount. A margin account involves borrowing and additional risks; see the SEC’s brokerage account information and check your firm’s terms, fees, and features.
- Find the security. Search for “Granite Construction Incorporated” or “GVA” and verify the NYSE listing and issuer in the order screen.
- Choose an order type. A market order generally executes promptly, but its execution price is not guaranteed and can differ from the last-traded price. A buy limit order sets the maximum price you are willing to pay, but it may not execute. The SEC explains these trade-offs in Understanding Order Types. Brokers may offer different order types and handle them differently.
- Review and submit. Check the ticker, order type, share quantity, and any price limit before submitting. Review the broker’s order preview and confirm the order status afterward.
Consider valuation and portfolio fit separately
Use a current quote from a reliable market-data provider if you need a live share price; no current GVA price or valuation multiple is established here. When comparing valuation, state the measurement date and calculation method, and relate the figure to reported operating results and risks rather than treating a share price alone as a measure of value.
Also consider your time horizon, ability to tolerate losses, and how much exposure you already have to one company or industry. The SEC’s guidance on diversification describes spreading investments across assets to lower overall portfolio risk. It cannot prevent losses in an individual stock, and buying GVA is not a diversified portfolio by itself.

What the available company figures do—and do not—show
Granite’s outlook, share count, market-value figure, and project award each describe a different thing and have different dates. Do not use them as substitutes for a current quote, valuation, dividend yield, or investment return. Forecasts can change or fail to materialize; Granite’s 2025 Form 10-K cautions that forward-looking statements speak only as of the report date and, except as required by law, the company undertakes no obligation to update them.
