Starknet’s STRK Jumps 19.2% as It Considers Becoming an L1

STRK gained 19.2% in a reported 24-hour snapshot after Starknet said it was actively considering an L1 transition—not that it had decided to make one.

STRK rose 19.2% in a reported 24-hour period after Starknet said it was actively considering becoming a Layer 1 network. The proposal is tied to Starknet’s stated goal of achieving quantum resistance by 2027, but it is not a confirmed migration: the project has not announced a final decision or detailed implementation plan. Starknet’s official FAQ still describes it as an Ethereum Layer 2 validity rollup.

What happened to STRK?

The Crypto Times reported the move on October 9, 2026, citing CoinGecko data captured October 8 at 19:15 UTC. At that snapshot, STRK was up 19.2% over 24 hours to $0.05871. The figures are a dated snapshot, not live prices.

Market measure Reported value
24-hour price change +19.2%
STRK price $0.05871
24-hour range $0.04831–$0.06222
Market capitalization $429.534 million
Fully diluted valuation $578.735 million
24-hour trading volume $229.46 million
Circulating supply 7.422 billion STRK
Total and maximum supply 10 billion STRK

All values in the table are CoinGecko figures reported by The Crypto Times for October 8, 2026, at 19:15 UTC (The Crypto Times). The report links the price rise in time with Starknet’s statement, but that timing alone does not establish that the announcement was the only cause of the move.

Did Starknet decide to become an L1?

No. In an October 8, 2026 X post reproduced by The Crypto Times, Starknet said: “We are actively considering becoming an L1. This would enable Starknet to become the first fully quantum-resistant network, with 2027 as our target.” The wording describes an option under consideration, not a finalized transition. The cited reports do not provide a detailed migration plan.

  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

“First fully quantum-resistant network” is Starknet’s stated ambition, not an independently verified result. The 2027 date is the project’s target; it is not an independently validated forecast.

Why consider a move to Layer 1?

The public rationale centers on control over security upgrades. Crypto Briefing reported that StarkWare co-founder and CEO Eli Ben-Sasson raised the question of whether Starknet should become an L1 for “post-quantum agility.” Greater control over upgrade timing could matter if the network needs to adapt its cryptography, but the available reporting does not establish that an L1 transition is necessary or that it would, by itself, make every part of the system quantum-resistant.

The Crypto Times summarized StarkWare’s June 30 post-quantum roadmap as describing Starknet’s STARK proofs as relying on collision-resistant hash functions rather than elliptic-curve arithmetic, alongside plans involving cryptographic agility and account abstraction. That technical description does not show that every network layer, application, wallet, or user account is already quantum-resistant. Neither cited report establishes a quantified timeline or probability for a quantum computer breaking cryptography.

What Starknet is today—and what would be at stake

Current role: an Ethereum L2

Starknet’s official FAQ describes it as a permissionless, decentralized Layer 2 validity rollup intended to scale Ethereum while retaining Ethereum’s security and decentralization. It says Starknet uses Ethereum for settlement and data availability. The FAQ lists STRK’s roles as transaction fees, governance, and staking within a proof-of-stake model; those functions do not establish a future price direction.

Possible trade-off: control versus reliance on Ethereum

An L1 transition could change how Starknet controls security upgrades and how it relies on Ethereum for settlement and data availability. That raises questions about security responsibilities, governance, technical implementation, and how the change would affect users and applications. The cited sources do not settle those questions or specify what a proposed L1 design would look like.

Broader roadmap: Ethereum, Bitcoin, and decentralization

Starknet’s decentralization roadmap describes a direction that includes serving as an L2 for Ethereum and Bitcoin while pursuing decentralization. It mentions additional validator responsibilities, a distributed sequencer layer, work on the S-two proving service, and Cairo Native. These are roadmap plans and implementation directions, not proof that every component is complete.

The roadmap also lists Bitcoin-related integrations and products, including Lightning Network payments with Braavos wallet, Xverse wallet integration, Atomiq cross-chain conversion, and a federated Runes bridge. This broader strategy is useful context for the L1 discussion, but the available reporting does not identify it as the cause of STRK’s price move.

What the recent upgrade says—and does not say

Starknet Community Forum prerelease notes dated September 9, 2026 described v0.14.4, including SNIP-36 support for proofs of qualifying block-sized virtual OS transactions. The notes listed an October 5 mainnet upgrade as planned and pending governance approval; The Crypto Times later reported the release as live. This release context is separate from the L1 proposal and does not amount to an implementation plan for it.

The prerelease notes said large proofs could take up to 1–2 minutes, compared with a typical 3–5 seconds for the small-proof flow. They also said updated pricing weights were expected to affect pricing for less than 1% of the vast majority of transactions, based on three months of mainnet traffic. These are estimates and observations stated in the v0.14.4 prerelease notes, not measurements of an L1 transition.

What the price move does—and does not—show

The 19.2% figure is a one-day market move in a snapshot attributed to CoinGecko, not evidence that traders have reached consensus about the proposal or its eventual outcome. The announcement also does not establish that an L1 transition will happen, that the 2027 target will be met, or that STRK will continue to rise. The official description of STRK’s roles explains how the token is used in the network; it is not an investment recommendation.
