Star Wars Zero Company vs. XCOM 2: How the Squad Tactics Compare

Star Wars Zero Company and XCOM 2 share turn-based squad combat but build different campaigns around it. This comparison explains their action systems, squad progression, injury rules, strategic layers, editions and the type of player each game suits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are choosing between Star Wars Zero Company and XCOM 2, decide first which campaign layer you want around the turn-based battles. Zero Company is a single-player Clone Wars story about Hawks and a mercenary squad, with relationship-driven bonuses, a customizable roster and the Den as a preparation and character hub. XCOM 2 is a resistance-management campaign in which tactical missions connect to the Avenger, a mobile headquarters, global operations and long-term research.

Both games ask you to plan movement, cover, attacks, abilities and team composition. Neither is simply “more tactical” in every respect; they prioritize different kinds of decisions. The comparison below separates documented mechanics from impressions so you can match the game to the way you prefer to play.

At a glance: the important differences

Category Star Wars Zero Company XCOM 2 What it means for you
Campaign premise Hawks leads an unconventional team during the twilight of the Clone Wars against the Separatist-aligned Infinite Coil and its leader, Kundri Fathom. XCOM rebuilds a scattered resistance 20 years after world leaders surrender to alien rule. Choose authored Star Wars squad drama or a resistance strategy campaign.
Mission combat Each operator has three action points for movement, attacks, abilities and cover. Assists, overwatch, rallying and Advantage-powered abilities are documented tools. The store description emphasizes guerrilla combat, concealment ambushes, five classes with skill trees, looting, and rescue or extraction objectives. Zero Company explains a flexible action-point toolkit; XCOM 2 foregrounds class specialization, concealment and mission variety.
Between missions The Den combines mission selection, squad conversations, personal missions and preparation. Activities should be completed before deployment because missions advance the cycle. The Avenger is a mobile headquarters where you guide the strike team, build support, respond to enemy operations, research technology and upgrade rooms. The Den is character-centered; the Avenger is a broader strategic-management layer.
Squad identity Hawks, original characters and customizable recruits; official material says bonds unlock combat synergies. Five soldier classes with separate skill trees, plus customization and a permadeath tag on the Steam listing. Zero Company makes relationships an explicit system; XCOM 2 makes class builds the central identity framework.
Loss rules A downed operator receives an injury. Three injuries cause death when permadeath mode is enabled. Steam labels the game “Perma Death,” but the material available here does not establish a directly equivalent injury-and-recovery rule. Do not assume the two games punish a wounded soldier in the same way.
Length and availability EA estimates 30–40 hours for most players’ main story, with difficulty and experience affecting the total. Released August 27, 2026 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Steam listing gives a February 4, 2016 PC release date. No comparable completion-time estimate is established here. Zero Company has a published story-length guide; XCOM 2’s campaign length depends heavily on how you play.

How the two campaign loops differ

Zero Company: a story campaign built around the Den

Zero Company follows Hawks, a former Republic officer, and a team of unconventional professionals investigating the Infinite Coil and the Shadow Plague in the final period of the Clone Wars. It is explicitly a single-player tactical campaign, so the squad’s story and the player’s choices are the organizing framework rather than a multiplayer ladder or sandbox war.

The Den is the home base between operations. From there, Hawks selects missions, talks with squadmates, learns their backstories and can unlock personal missions. The official beginner guidance warns that missions advance the cycle, making the order of operations meaningful: finish the Den activities you want to do before deploying. That creates a rhythm of conversation and preparation followed by a tactical sortie, rather than a purely menu-driven mission list.

  • Standard Edition for PlayStation 5 (disc) includes the full Star Wars Zero Company game. Single-player turn-based tactics set in the twilight of the Clone Wars—lead Hawks and Zero Company in an intense campaign.
  • Build your squad from clone troopers, scoundrels, astromechs and even a Jedi—combine abilities and gear in deep Tactical-Strategy combat.
  • Plan at your base, adapt on dynamic battlefields and make decisions that shape missions and replayability in this cinematic Star Wars story.
  • Customise Hawks and your operatives, tailor loadouts and unlock powerful squad synergies designed for Strategy, Turn-Based and Sci-Fi fans.

EA’s support guidance estimates roughly 30 to 40 hours for most players to complete the main story. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed runtime; difficulty settings and your tactics experience can shorten or extend it. It also describes the main story, not every optional personal mission or every possible roster variation.

XCOM 2: a resistance campaign wrapped around the Avenger

XCOM 2 starts twenty years after humanity’s leaders surrender to alien forces. XCOM has been scattered, and your job is to rebuild the resistance while deciding where and when to strike. The Avenger is an alien supply craft converted into a mobile headquarters. Its role reaches beyond squad recovery: you choose where to guide the strike team, build support, counter enemy operations, research weapons and armor, and develop new rooms and capabilities.

That strategic layer changes the meaning of a tactical victory. A successful mission is part of a campaign calendar in which research, engineering, resistance growth and enemy activity compete for your attention. The Steam description also calls out operations around the world, so the campaign asks you to manage a network of threats rather than move through only one authored chain of story missions.

The two loops therefore create different kinds of pressure. Zero Company asks whether to spend time with a character, pursue a personal mission or deploy for the next operation. XCOM 2 asks which global problem to answer, what to research and how to keep a mobile base developing while the enemy advances.

What a turn looks like in each game

Zero Company’s three-action-point economy

The official guide gives every operator health and three action points (AP) per turn. Those points can be used to move into range, reach cover, make ranged or melee attacks and activate abilities. The documented options also include calling for a nearby teammate’s assist, placing an operator on overwatch with remaining AP, and rallying an injured operator.

Zero Company adds a separate Advantage resource. Operators earn Advantage by damaging enemies and can spend it on special abilities. That creates a two-stage decision: use AP to establish position and attack, then decide whether the damage you generated is worth converting into a stronger ability now or preserving the flow of the encounter. Cover and adjacency matter because they determine whether movement, an assist or an attack can be made safely.

  • Command an elite squad through a gritty and authentic Star Wars story set in the twilight of the Clone Wars. Step into the role of Hawks, a former Republic officer leading Zero Company against an emerging threat that could consume the galaxy.

Because the guide presents three AP rather than a simple move-then-fire rule, a turn can be assembled around the situation: advance and shoot, move farther and set overwatch, attack and help a nearby ally, or rally someone who has been hurt. The exact value of each sequence depends on enemy placement and the abilities available to that operator.

XCOM 2’s class, concealment and objective toolkit

The XCOM 2 store description emphasizes a different set of tactical anchors: guerrilla combat, concealment ambushes, five soldier classes with skill trees, looting, and rescue and extraction objectives. Concealment ambushes make the opening engagement a planning problem: you can decide when to reveal the squad and how to arrange the first volley before the enemy responds.

Class skill trees make long-term build choices central to combat. A soldier is not only a body occupying cover; the class and selected abilities define what that soldier can contribute as the campaign develops. Looting and objective types such as rescue or extraction add reasons to move beyond simply eliminating every enemy.

The available description does not provide a like-for-like action-point breakdown for XCOM 2, so it would be misleading to claim that its turn economy is identical to Zero Company’s or to declare one system universally deeper. The documented distinction is one of emphasis: Zero Company spells out a three-AP toolkit with Advantage and teammate assists, while XCOM 2 highlights concealment, classes, objectives and the resistance campaign around them.

Squad relationships, recruits and customization

Why bonds are a headline system in Zero Company

EA says squad bonds unlock combat synergies, and its support material says relationships affect gameplay. The StarWars.com beginner overview likewise describes skills developing through deployment and bonds unlocking synergies. This makes team composition more than a spreadsheet exercise: who fights together can influence what the group can do in battle.

Official material centers Hawks and recurring squadmates, while a preview of the game reported procedurally generated potential recruits and the ability to change a character’s appearance and specialization. Those recruit and customization details come from a preview build and should be treated as an observation of that build, not a guarantee that every final-game possibility has been exhaustively documented.

The Den reinforces the relationship focus. Conversations reveal backstories and can open personal missions, giving the player a reason to use a character beyond a numerical role. If you like a squad whose effectiveness and narrative develop together, this is Zero Company’s clearest differentiator.

Why XCOM 2 makes class development the organizing principle

XCOM 2 lists five soldier classes, each with a skill tree. The long-term question is how to develop those classes and combine their capabilities for the next operation. Its Steam tags also identify character customization and permadeath, so naming, appearance and survival can matter to the player’s attachment to a soldier.

The documented material does not describe XCOM 2’s relationships as a combat-bond system equivalent to Zero Company’s. You can still form attachments to soldiers through repeated deployments, but the source-backed mechanical distinction is that Zero Company explicitly ties bonds to synergies, whereas XCOM 2’s listed structure is class and skill-tree progression.

What happens when an operator or soldier goes down?

Zero Company’s injury threshold

In Zero Company, a downed operator receives an injury. When permadeath mode is enabled, three injuries cause that operator’s death. The guide also documents rallying an injured operator as a combat action, so recovering a teammate can become part of the turn’s priorities.

This rule creates a visible history of harm: a soldier can return from one or two knockdowns, but repeated exposure eventually becomes fatal under the stated setting. Whether to spend an action rallying, retreating to cover or pressing the attack is therefore a tactical and campaign decision.

What is and is not established for XCOM 2

Steam labels XCOM 2 with “Perma Death,” confirming that soldier loss is part of its presented experience. The material available for this comparison does not document a directly equivalent injury count, recovery sequence or campaign consequence. Treat the label as evidence that permanent loss exists, not as proof that XCOM 2 uses Zero Company’s three-injury rule.

Mission objectives and the decisions they create

Zero Company’s positioning and support decisions

Zero Company’s documented combat actions make positioning the foundation of a mission. You move into cover, establish range for a ranged or melee attack, call a nearby teammate’s assist, set overwatch or rally an injured operator. Advantage earned from damage then opens special actions. The resulting decisions are about sequencing: which operator spends AP to create safety, who can support a neighbor, and when a generated resource justifies a special ability.

Its story context can also shape why a mission matters. Hawks is investigating the Infinite Coil and Shadow Plague, while the Den and personal missions keep the tactical map connected to the squad’s individual stories.

XCOM 2’s concealment, loot and extraction pressure

XCOM 2’s listed mission variety broadens the tactical checklist. Concealment ambushes reward deliberate setup; looting gives you a reason to move toward rewards; rescue and extraction objectives can force a withdrawal or a timed advance instead of a full battlefield sweep. Five classes and their skill trees then determine which soldiers are best suited to each objective.

That combination makes XCOM 2’s missions feel like parts of a global insurgency. The objective is not always “remove every hostile unit,” and the Avenger layer means the result feeds into research, support and future operations.

Story tone and campaign identity

Zero Company is designed around a specific Star Wars period rather than a generic science-fiction war. Its Clone Wars setting, Hawks-led squad and conflict with the Infinite Coil give every operation an authored frame. At launch, Game Director and Bit Reactor CEO Greg Foertsch said, “We’re incredibly proud of this game and excited to see what Zero Company YOU forge through your choices and playstyle.” Lucasfilm Games VP and GM Douglas Reilly described the collaboration as “a deep, tactical experience set in the darker corners of the Clone Wars.” Those statements express the game’s intended combination of tactical choice and a darker, character-focused setting.

XCOM 2’s identity is post-surrender resistance. You are rebuilding an organization that has already lost, converting the Avenger into a headquarters and deciding how to answer an alien regime’s operations around the world. Its fiction supports a campaign about momentum, scarcity and strategic comeback rather than a fixed Clone Wars investigation.

Which game fits which player?

Choose Zero Company if you want…

  • A Clone Wars campaign with an authored commander and recurring squadmates.
  • Relationships that are explicitly connected to combat synergies.
  • A Den where conversations, personal missions and deployment preparation share the same space.
  • Three-action-point turns with assists, overwatch, rallying and Advantage-funded special actions.
  • A customizable Hawks-led roster, including the recruit customization reported in the preview build.

Choose XCOM 2 if you want…

  • A resistance story set after an alien takeover rather than a Star Wars narrative.
  • A mobile headquarters whose location, support, research and room upgrades shape the campaign.
  • Five soldier classes with skill trees as the main framework for squad development.
  • Concealment ambushes, loot and rescue or extraction objectives.
  • A campaign where global enemy operations compete with your strategic plans.

If you are undecided

Start with the surrounding loop, not a claim about tactical quality. Pick Zero Company when character bonds and Clone Wars storytelling are the reason you want to deploy a squad. Pick XCOM 2 when the appeal is managing a resistance, developing a mobile base and responding to threats across a wider campaign map. Both support careful, turn-based planning; the better choice is the one whose non-battle decisions you will enjoy making for dozens of missions.

Limits of a direct comparison

No sound, like-for-like published statistic establishes that one game has greater tactical depth, difficulty, replayability or player preference. A previewer reported playing 15 hours of a Zero Company preview build over one week; that is a preview experience, not a completion-time estimate or controlled comparison with XCOM 2. Likewise, volatile Steam review totals should not be treated as a quality score.

The safest conclusion is therefore qualitative. Zero Company documents a relationship-centered squad campaign with a clearly described three-AP combat system. XCOM 2 documents a class-driven resistance campaign in which concealment, mission objectives and Avenger management are central. Those are different design priorities, not a reason to assume one game contains tactics while the other does not.
