In the mobile Copilot app, you can find, preview, and ask questions about Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, but selecting a file for editing normally hands it off to the matching Word, Excel, or PowerPoint mobile app. For complete browsing and file management, use OneDrive.
On the Copilot website or in Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Agents can create new files and save them to OneDrive. To edit with Copilot itself, open the file in an Office app and use Copilot > Tools > Edit with Copilot when that feature is available for your account, app channel, device, and region.

What you can do with Office files in Copilot
“Open” has two different meanings in Microsoft’s Copilot experiences. You may open a file for a read-only preview and Copilot Chat questions, or you may open it in an Office app with editing controls. Those are separate actions, and the buttons you see can differ between mobile, web, Teams, Windows, macOS, iPhone, and Android.

| What you want to do | Best route | What happens | Main conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find a recent Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file on a phone | Copilot mobile app | Search or choose a recent file, then preview it and ask questions in Copilot Chat | The file must be available to the signed-in account |
| Edit an existing file on a phone | Open it from Copilot, then continue in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint mobile | Copilot redirects you to the corresponding Office app | The relevant Office app, account access, and any plan or device requirements must be satisfied |
| Browse the complete file list or manage files | OneDrive mobile app or OneDrive on the web | You can browse folders, search, move, rename, and manage files there | Use the personal or work/school OneDrive location that owns the file |
| Create a new Office file from a prompt | Word, Excel, or PowerPoint Agent in Copilot on the web or in Teams | The Agent generates a file and saves it to OneDrive | Microsoft’s support page states that these Agents require a Microsoft 365 Copilot license |
| Ask Copilot to change an open document or workbook | The Office app’s Edit with Copilot tool | Copilot applies or proposes edits in the Office app | Availability is rolling out and depends on license, app channel, account, and other conditions |
Do not expect one universal “Edit in Copilot” command. A mobile preview, an Agent-generated file, and in-app Edit with Copilot are different workflows.

Open an existing Office file in the Copilot mobile app
Find a recent file or search for one
- Open the Copilot app on your iPhone or Android phone and sign in with the Microsoft account that has access to the file.
- Open the Search tab. Subscribers may see recent files and can search for a Word document, Excel workbook, or PowerPoint presentation.
- Select the file. Copilot opens a preview rather than an editable Office canvas.
Microsoft’s current mobile guidance also describes Quick access categories such as Recent, Shared, and Favorites. Where the controls are available, you can filter results by location, sharer, or owner. The exact categories and filters can change with the app version and account type.
Read the preview and ask questions
In the preview, use Copilot Chat to ask about the file’s content. For example, you can request a summary of a document, ask which figures appear in a worksheet, or ask for the main points of a presentation. Treat the response as assistance, not as a substitute for checking the source file: a preview question does not change the document, workbook, or presentation.
Move from preview to editing
- With the file preview open, choose the command to edit or open it in its Office app.
- Copilot sends a Word file to Word, an Excel file to Excel, or a PowerPoint file to PowerPoint. This handoff is expected; it is not an error or a sign that Copilot failed to open the file.
- In the Office app, wait for the file to finish loading, confirm that the correct account is signed in, and make your changes there.
If the corresponding Office app is not installed, the handoff may take you to its installation page or leave you unable to edit until the app is installed. Install the app from the official mobile app store, then repeat the open action.

The Copilot mobile app is not Microsoft’s full file-management view. For folders, older files, shared libraries, and actions such as moving or renaming items, Microsoft directs users to OneDrive.
- Open the OneDrive mobile app, or open OneDrive on the web.
- Sign in with the account that owns the file or with an account to which the file was shared.
- Browse folders or use OneDrive search. Check whether the item is in OneDrive – Personal, a work or school OneDrive, or a shared location.
- Tap or click the file and choose the matching Office app to edit it.
OneDrive is especially useful when a file is not among Copilot’s recent items. Copilot’s recent list is a convenience view; it is not proof that a file has been deleted when it is absent.

Open a file directly from Word, Excel, or PowerPoint on iOS or Android
Microsoft’s iOS and Android setup guidance uses the Office app’s own Open command. The available file list is specific to the Office app you have open, so Word shows Word-compatible files and Excel shows Excel-compatible files.
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint on your phone or tablet.
- Tap Open (the label or location can vary slightly by app version).
- Choose OneDrive – Personal for a personal account, or choose the work/school OneDrive location for an organizational account.
- Browse or search for the file, then tap it to open.
- Edit and save in the Office app. If the file is shared, your ability to save changes depends on the permissions granted by its owner or organization.
Sign in with the account that can access the file. Extra Microsoft 365 app capabilities can require the account associated with a qualifying subscription. If you have more than one account, check the profile or account switcher before searching; looking in a personal OneDrive while signed in to a work account, or the reverse, is a common reason for an apparently missing file.
Create a new Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file with a Copilot Agent
Copilot on the web and Copilot in Teams can use specialized Agents for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This is a creation workflow, not a way to unlock editing of every existing file in the Copilot mobile app.
Requirements
- Use Copilot on the web or in Teams, where the relevant Agent is offered under Agents or Tools.
- Microsoft’s support documentation states that Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Agents require a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
- Sign in with an account that can save to OneDrive.
- Review the generated file before sharing it. Copilot can produce incorrect text, calculations, formatting, or slide content.
Procedure
- Open Copilot on the web or in Teams.
- Open Agents or Tools and select the Word, Excel, or PowerPoint Agent that matches the file you want.
- Describe the deliverable in a specific prompt. Include the audience, structure, data range, tone, number of slides or sections, and any required formulas or sources.
- Review the first draft and give follow-up instructions to change the structure, wording, calculations, or design.
- When the Agent finishes, use its save or open command. Microsoft says the completed file is saved to OneDrive.
- Open the saved file in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint for detailed review and polishing before you send it to anyone.
A useful prompt describes an outcome rather than merely saying “make a file.” For example, specify the columns and formulas for a workbook, the heading hierarchy for a report, or the slide count and audience for a presentation. Always verify numbers and citations in the resulting Office file.
Edit with Copilot inside an Office app
Edit with Copilot is a separate in-app feature. It is not the same as previewing a file in the Copilot mobile app and not the same as asking a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint Agent to create a new file.

How to start an edit request
- Open the file in Word, Excel, or another supported Office app.
- Sign in with the Copilot-enabled account that has permission to edit the file.
- Select Copilot from Home or the app’s sidebar.
- Choose Tools, then Edit with Copilot.
- Enter a specific request, such as asking for a clearer paragraph, a restructured table, or a particular change to a presentation.
- Inspect the proposed or applied change in the document. Keep, revise, or undo it using the Office app’s normal editing controls.
Why the command may be missing
Microsoft describes Edit with Copilot as a feature that is still rolling out. The command can depend on your license, whether you are using a personal or organizational account, the Office app and update channel, and whether your account has preview access.
For Word, Microsoft lists organizational Copilot eligibility and Microsoft 365 Premium eligibility, while noting that some personal-plan users may need Frontier or Insider preview access depending on the surface and rollout. Those conditions can change, so check the current eligibility information shown in your own Office app rather than assuming that every subscriber has the same button.
Choose the right workflow
| If your goal is… | Start here | Do not expect… |
|---|---|---|
| Quickly locate a document and ask what it contains | Copilot mobile Search, Recent, or Shared | Full document editing in the preview |
| Find an old file, browse folders, or manage sharing | OneDrive | All OneDrive management controls inside Copilot |
| Change an existing file on a phone | Open it in Copilot, then continue in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint mobile | A complete edit session inside the Copilot mobile preview |
| Generate a new document, workbook, or presentation from instructions | The matching Agent in Copilot web or Teams | Automatic accuracy; the output still needs review |
| Use natural-language changes on an open Office file | Copilot > Tools > Edit with Copilot in the Office app | Guaranteed availability on every account or device |
Account, storage, and work-file rules
Personal versus work or school accounts
The account type determines which OneDrive location and permissions Copilot can use. A personal Microsoft 365 subscription may provide some Copilot functions while you are viewing work content, but access to an organization’s Microsoft Graph data and questions about other organizational documents can require an organizational Copilot add-on under Microsoft’s described account comparison.
Administrators can disable personal-subscription Copilot use on work content. In the organizational setup described by Microsoft, Copilot activity can also be auditable. If a work file opens in read-only mode or does not appear at all, the cause may be an organization policy rather than a problem with the file.
Sharing and permissions
Finding a file does not automatically grant edit rights. A shared file may be visible for preview while its owner allows only reading. Ask the owner or administrator for edit permission, or open the file from the organization’s approved SharePoint or OneDrive location if that is where the team stores it.

Multiple signed-in accounts
Check the account shown in Copilot, OneDrive, and the Office app separately. Mobile apps can retain more than one identity, and a search performed under the wrong identity can return no result even when the file exists. Switch to the account that owns or was invited to the file, then search again.
Device, plan, and regional limitations
Mobile editing capabilities are not identical across plans and screen sizes. Microsoft lists a 10.9-inch screen-size limit for some qualifying plans in the Microsoft Copilot mobile app. A larger tablet can therefore show different editing options from a phone, even when both use the same account.
Microsoft also says availability can vary by country and advises checking current regional availability and system requirements. App updates, preview or Insider channels, license changes, and administrator settings can alter the labels or tools you see. Treat the steps above as the current navigation pattern, but use the eligibility and plan details displayed for your account as the final check.

The file does not appear in Copilot
- Confirm that you are signed in with the account that owns the file or received the sharing invitation.
- Search from the Copilot Search tab instead of relying only on Recent.
- Check OneDrive directly, including the personal and work/school locations.
- Review filters for location, owner, and sharer if those controls are shown.
- If the file belongs to an organization, ask whether a policy or permission is restricting access.
The file previews but will not edit
That behavior is expected in the mobile Copilot app: the preview is for reading and questions, while editing is handed to Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. Install the matching Office app, sign in there with the same account, and open the file again. If it still opens read-only, verify the file’s sharing permission.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Edit with Copilot is not listed
- Open the file in the Office app rather than in the Copilot mobile preview.
- Check Copilot in Home or the sidebar, then open Tools.
- Confirm that the account and plan meet the current eligibility rules.
- Install the latest available Office update and check whether your account is on a preview or Insider channel when Microsoft requires one.
- For a work or school account, ask the administrator whether Copilot is enabled for your tenant and file type.
The Word, Excel, or PowerPoint Agent is unavailable
Use Copilot on the web or in Teams and look under Agents or Tools. If the Agent is absent, check whether the signed-in account has the Microsoft 365 Copilot license that Microsoft lists for these Agents. An ordinary Copilot chat session does not necessarily include the Agent.

A work file is blocked or missing after account switching
Return to OneDrive and verify the organization’s location, then sign in with the work or school identity that was granted access. If the organization prohibits personal-subscription Copilot on work content, only the organization’s approved Copilot configuration may be able to open or process the file.
Review changes before you share a file
Whether an Agent creates the file or Edit with Copilot changes it, inspect the result in the dedicated Office app. Check formulas and totals in Excel, heading order and tracked changes in Word, and slide text, speaker notes, and layout in PowerPoint. Confirm that the file is saved in the intended OneDrive location and that its sharing permissions match the audience. Copilot assistance does not remove your responsibility to verify the content or the recipients.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I edit a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file entirely inside the Copilot mobile app?
Microsoft’s mobile workflow supports finding and previewing the file in Copilot, then redirects editing to the corresponding Word, Excel, or PowerPoint mobile app.
Where should I look if Copilot cannot find an older file?
Open OneDrive and search the personal or work/school location that stores the file. Copilot’s Recent view is not the complete file list.
Why can a colleague edit a file with Copilot when I cannot?
Feature availability can differ by license, account type, app channel, device size, region, and organization policy. The same file can therefore expose different controls to different users.
Do Copilot Agents automatically produce reliable Office files?
No. Agents can create a file and save it to OneDrive, but Microsoft advises reviewing generated files for accuracy before sharing.
