Use Mission Control to survey open windows and desktop spaces, then select the window or space you need. They solve different navigation problems, so neither is a universal replacement for the other.
How Stage Manager and Mission Control differ
Stage Manager keeps the current app or selected group of apps in the center of the screen, with recently used apps available at the side. Mission Control spreads open windows into an overview and shows desktop spaces, full-screen apps, and Split View along the top. Apple describes them as complementary ways to navigate windows, not as competing features with a single winner.

| If you want to… | Use | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Keep attention on one app or a working set of apps | Stage Manager | The current app or group in the center, with recent apps at the side. |
| Find a particular open window or desktop | Mission Control | An overview of open windows and a Spaces bar for desktops, full-screen apps, and Split View. |
Apple’s guides document how each feature works, but do not report controlled tests showing that one is faster or improves productivity more. Choose based on what you need to locate and how much of the desktop you want to see. Apple’s overview of window management explains how the options fit together.

Group apps around a task
Drag an app from the side into the center to add it to the current group. Drag it back to the side to remove it. When you switch to a group containing multiple windows, those windows open together. This makes groups useful for keeping a task’s apps together rather than locating each window individually. Apple’s Stage Manager guide describes the controls and settings, including the option to hide recent apps from the side.
Turn it on and check the display setting
- Open Control Center and select Stage Manager, or go to System Settings > Desktop & Dock and turn Stage Manager on.
- If Stage Manager is unavailable, open System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Mission Control and enable Displays have separate Spaces. Apple identifies this setting as necessary for Stage Manager.
For the current setting names, see Apple’s Desktop & Dock settings guide. Exact labels can vary as macOS changes.

When Mission Control is the better fit
Choose Mission Control when you know a particular window or desktop is open but do not want to cycle through apps to find it. Its overview lays out open windows and exposes the available spaces at the top.
Open Mission Control and select a destination
- Press the Mission Control key or press Control–Up Arrow. You can also use a three-finger upward swipe on a trackpad, a two-finger double-tap on a Magic Mouse, or drag a window to the top of the screen.
- Click a window to return to it, or click a desktop in the Spaces bar to switch spaces.
A trackpad is not required: the keyboard shortcut, Mission Control key, and Magic Mouse gesture are alternatives. On a second display, Mission Control shows only the windows and spaces in use on that display. See Apple’s Mission Control guide for the documented ways to open and use the overview.

Use spaces for separate desktops
Mission Control is also where you manage desktop spaces. You can create additional spaces and switch among them; Apple’s guide states that a Mac can have up to 16 spaces. Apple’s guide to working in multiple spaces covers creating and navigating them.
