The right choice depends on the exact CPU’s support status for your motherboard revision and BIOS, then on how your workload uses cores, memory, and PCIe devices. For revision 1.1, GIGABYTE says BIOS FA1 adds support for the 9000 families; verify your board’s revision and BIOS before buying.
Which CPUs are compatible with the TRX50 AERO D?
GIGABYTE identifies the TRX50 AERO D as an sTR5 motherboard for these processor families:

Those family names do not confirm that every individual model works with every board revision or BIOS. Before selecting a specific SKU, open the GIGABYTE TRX50 AERO D specifications and follow its instruction to check GIGABYTE’s latest CPU support list. Use the support page for the actual revision printed on your motherboard; do not assume lists or BIOS requirements are interchangeable between revisions.

- Find the revision marking on the motherboard itself and record whether it is 1.0, 1.1, or 1.2.
- Open the GIGABYTE support page for that exact revision and find the CPU support list.
- Locate the exact processor model you plan to buy. Check its listed minimum BIOS version rather than relying only on the processor family name.
- Compare the required BIOS version with the BIOS currently installed, if the system is already assembled. If it is not, ask the seller or system builder to confirm that the board will arrive with a compatible BIOS or can be updated before the CPU is installed.
For revision 1.1, GIGABYTE’s BIOS history lists version FA1, dated May 20, 2025, as adding Ryzen Threadripper 9000 and Threadripper PRO 9000-WX support. This threshold is specific to revision 1.1; consult the support page for other revisions and for the exact model’s entry. See GIGABYTE’s revision 1.1 support and BIOS history.

Choose by the work your processor must do
There is no universally best CPU for this board without knowing the applications, workload, and budget. A processor with more cores can help when the software and task scale across them, but core count alone does not establish which model will finish a particular job fastest.
Rendering, compilation, and simulation
Identify the exact programs and versions you use, and whether your typical jobs can keep many cores busy. Compare independent benchmarks for those applications and representative tasks, not just a general CPU ranking. Consider how often the work runs and whether shorter completion times justify the higher processor and platform cost.

Virtualization and mixed workstation use
For virtual machines or a mix of professional applications, consider both the number of concurrent workloads and their memory requirements. A processor that suits a heavily parallel render may not be the best fit for a workflow limited by memory capacity, device expansion, or lightly threaded tasks.

Compare the whole build
Include the CPU, sTR5-compatible cooling, and the required ECC registered DDR5 memory in your budget. The cited board specifications do not validate a particular cooler or memory kit, so check compatibility for each exact component rather than assuming that a general product category guarantees a fit.

Account for memory requirements
The board has four DDR5 DIMM slots in a quad-channel configuration and supports ECC registered RDIMM and RDIMM-3DS memory. GIGABYTE lists standard and overclocked memory rates, but the memory type, supported speed, and usable module count can depend on the CPU and memory configuration. Check the board’s current memory support list for the exact processor and kit before purchasing; do not treat a listed rate as guaranteed for every configuration.

AMD describes TRX50 as a four-channel-memory platform with up to 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes. For comparison, AMD lists WRX90 with eight-channel memory and up to 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes. GIGABYTE lists both PRO 7000-WX and PRO 9000-WX families for this TRX50 board, so the PRO label alone does not mean a processor is limited to WRX90. However, choosing a higher-tier CPU will not turn this motherboard into a WRX90 platform. If your design needs the latter platform’s memory-channel or PCIe-lane capacity, compare motherboards and platforms before choosing the CPU. AMD’s platform information is at Ryzen Threadripper processors for desktop workstations.

For graphics cards, the board specification identifies PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 as CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 x16 slots for supported Threadripper families, and PCIEX16_3 as PCIe 4.0 x16. GIGABYTE recommends installing a single graphics card in PCIEX16_1. Check the full board specification against your planned device layout, rather than counting on every slot to provide the same connection.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Exact compatibility: Confirm the CPU model in the support list for your board revision and meet its minimum BIOS requirement.
- Workload fit: Use benchmarks for the applications and versions you actually run; consider whether additional cores benefit those tasks.
- Memory: Confirm ECC registered DIMM type, capacity, module count, and speed for the CPU and kit.
- Expansion: Check the number and generation of PCIe devices you need, including which slot each device will use.
- Total cost: Budget for compatible cooling and memory as well as the processor, and compare that total with your expected workload benefit.
