When McCurry sought to retrieve it, a deputy reportedly told him the department was keeping the vehicle. The report says McCurry then sued the sheriff’s office, but it provides no case number, filed complaint, or update on the suit’s status.
Why does the sheriff’s office say it kept the ATV?
According to Reason’s account, the department’s explanation was that a judge awarded the vehicle to the office after prosecutors advised disposing of evidence from closed cases. The office reportedly obtained a judge’s order allowing it to title the ATV in its own name.

The department also cited about $1,060 in taxpayer-funded spending on new tires and a battery. McCurry reportedly offered to repay those expenses, but officials refused. These details are presented in the news summary; the order and a direct statement from the sheriff’s office are not included.
Did a judge legally award the ATV to the department?
The report relays the department’s claim that a judge’s order authorized titling the vehicle in the office’s name, but it does not reproduce the order or explain the legal basis for it. Nor does it include the lawsuit’s claims or any court ruling on McCurry’s challenge. The article therefore does not establish whether the transfer was lawful or how a court will resolve the dispute.

The headline phrase “Thick as Thieves” is a pun; the report does not allege that McCurry and officials colluded. Its account is a short summary, not a court filing or a complete presentation of both sides.
