The reported exchange attributed the request to an association decision against bachelor tenants. News reports do not establish whether the restriction was legally enforceable or what happened afterward.
What happened in the Bengaluru flat dispute?
Hindustan Times reported on October 1, 2026, that Sheoran had recently found an apartment and shared a photograph with its key. Within days, he said he was being asked to leave because he was a bachelor. The Economic Times and India Today also reported his account.
According to the coverage, the exchange took place over WhatsApp with the residential society president. The president reportedly told Sheoran to speak with the owner and look for another flat. Sheoran replied that he and his flatmates had paid the security deposit and had a rental agreement. The president then reportedly said the association had decided not to allow bachelors and asked him to work with the owner to vacate.
Hindustan Times reproduced the president’s message as: “Yes, we have communicated the association’s decision that no bachelors allowed. Please work with your owner to vacate at the earliest. Thanks,” The report also quoted Sheoran’s post on X: “Bangalore landlords so hostile, if they find out you’re a bachelor they will take you back and shoot you in the head,” These are quotations reported from the exchange and post; the news coverage does not independently authenticate the original messages.

Can a society require a bachelor tenant to leave after a rental agreement is signed?
The reports do not answer that question for Sheoran’s apartment. They do not provide the rental agreement, the apartment’s governing declaration or bye-laws, a record of the association decision, or the landlord’s response. They also do not establish whether the apartment is governed by the Karnataka Apartment Ownership Act, 1972, or whether the reported decision met the applicable requirements.
Section 24 of the Act says tenants using property submitted to the Act are subject to the Act, the declaration and the association bye-laws. It also says association decisions bind owners and tenants when lawfully made according to the applicable voting percentages. That statutory context does not itself decide this dispute: the documents and facts needed to apply it have not been reported. The available coverage therefore does not establish whether the restriction could be enforced against Sheoran.

What is—and is not—known about the outcome?
- The reports identify the tenant as Bengaluru entrepreneur Nikhil Sheoran and say he had paid a security deposit and had a rental agreement with his flatmates.
- They do not state the deposit amount, provide the agreement’s terms, or report whether the landlord returned or retained any money.
- They report the president’s move-out request as being based on an association decision against bachelors, but do not include the association’s governing documents or an official statement from the association or landlord.
- No verified later outcome or court ruling appears in the coverage.
Hindustan Times said Sheoran’s post had received over half a million views when it reported the story. That is a report-specific social-media engagement figure, not evidence of how widespread bachelor-tenant restrictions are.
