Stablecoin Cards vs. Crypto Debit Cards: What’s the Difference?

Stablecoin cards are one type of crypto debit card. The practical differences are the assets a card spends and its conversion, custody, fees, and availability.

A stablecoin card spends from a digital token designed to track a value such as the U.S. dollar or euro. A crypto debit card is a broader category: it may spend stablecoins, volatile cryptocurrencies, or both. The terms therefore overlap—a stablecoin-funded debit card is one type of crypto debit card. What matters in practice is which assets the card draws from and how its provider handles conversion, custody, and fees.

What is a crypto card?

A crypto debit card links a digital-asset balance to a payment card. Depending on the product, it can draw from a stablecoin, a volatile cryptocurrency, or a fiat balance that the customer funded by selling crypto in advance. The label alone does not tell you which assets are supported or how the account works. Mastercard’s overview of crypto cards describes programs where customers can select an asset and, in some cases, set the order in which assets are used.

How does payment work at checkout?

In a typical linked-card transaction, the card program identifies the purchase amount and converts or sells the selected digital asset into fiat. The payment then travels over the card network, and the merchant is generally paid in local currency. Mastercard says the merchant usually does not need to know that crypto funded the purchase. Conversion may happen around the time of authorization, or the customer may need to sell crypto and preload a fiat balance beforehand. The conversion arrangement varies by program.

A stablecoin card generally does not send a blockchain payment directly from the shopper to the merchant. Visa says most merchants do not accept stablecoins directly; stablecoin-linked cards connect a digital-asset balance to existing Visa card rails. Visa’s Bridge announcement describes stablecoin balances being converted to fiat so merchants can receive local currency.

What should you compare before choosing a card?

Supported assets and spending order

Check that the card supports the specific stablecoin you hold, not merely stablecoins in general. If it can also spend volatile crypto, find out whether you can choose the funding asset or set a priority order. Otherwise, a purchase could draw from a different balance than you expected. Mastercard describes these selection options, but availability depends on the card program.

Conversion timing and exchange rate

Find out whether the provider converts crypto at purchase authorization or requires you to sell assets and top up fiat first. Ask how the conversion rate is set and whether a spread is included. The rate and timing affect the amount of crypto deducted, even when the checkout price is in ordinary currency.

Custody and control

Some cards connect to an exchange-held wallet; others may work with a self-custody wallet. These arrangements give the customer different levels of control over the assets. Mastercard describes cards that can work with both types, but that does not make self-custody a standard feature. Do not assume a card is self-custodial just because it is marketed as a stablecoin card.

All-in fees

Review more than the advertised transaction fee. Check for conversion spreads and any purchase, funding, ATM, or foreign-exchange charges. Mastercard notes that a spread can impose a cost even if a provider advertises no transaction fee. The sources do not establish one fee schedule for either category; costs depend on the specific issuer and program. See Mastercard’s discussion of crypto-card costs.

Confirm the issuing entity and whether applications are open in your country. Also check merchant-category restrictions, the cardholder agreement, and how to dispute a charge. A network or partnership announcement does not mean every product is available to every customer.

Announcement What it said How to interpret it
Visa and Bridge, April 2025 Launch markets were Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, and Chile. The program deducted funds from a stablecoin balance and converted them to fiat so merchants could be paid in local currency; Lead Bank was named as a financial institution partner. Visa announcement These were launch details at announcement, not a guarantee that the same markets or eligibility apply now.
Visa figures reported in 2026 Visa reported approximately $5.2 billion in stablecoin-linked card volume in 2025, up 319% year over year. It said that volume represented 0.04% of its $14.2 trillion total global volume. Visa also reported more than 130 stablecoin-funded card programs across more than 50 countries and expected the program count to roughly double during 2026, based on its active pipeline. Visa’s 2026 figures and forecast The volume figures refer to 2025. The doubling figure is a forecast, not a reported outcome.
Visa and Bridge, March 3, 2026 Visa said Bridge-enabled cards were live in 18 countries and planned expansion to more than 100 countries by the end of 2026. It identified Phantom and MetaMask as platforms using cards to let customers spend stablecoins. Visa update The 18-country figure was the reported status on the announcement date; expansion beyond 100 countries was a plan, not a completed rollout.

Other announced examples include Mastercard’s partnership with MoonPay for stablecoin-linked cards and Mastercard’s and Fiserv’s plans for FIUSD-linked card payments. Which kind of card fits your needs?

  • Choose based on the asset you want to spend: A stablecoin card may suit someone who wants to use a token designed to track a traditional currency, but the card still has conversion and custody terms to review.
  • Look beyond the category name: A crypto debit card may also spend stablecoins, while some stablecoin cards can draw from more than one asset. Compare the actual funding choices.
  • Evaluate the complete transaction: The conversion method, rate, fees, custody, country eligibility, and dispute process are product-specific. These details matter more than whether a provider calls its card “crypto” or “stablecoin.”
