Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →TLS, the protocol most people still call “SSL,” protects the connection between a visitor and your website. A firewall for a website, usually a web application firewall (WAF), protects the website itself by checking each incoming request and blocking or challenging the ones that match known attack patterns or your own rules. They solve different problems, so most public websites need both.
What “SSL” means on a website today
“SSL” is shorthand that stuck. The older SSL protocols have been superseded by TLS (Transport Layer Security), and the padlock in a browser’s address bar reflects a TLS connection. When hosting dashboards, certificate authorities, and browser documentation say “SSL certificate,” they usually mean a certificate used to establish a TLS connection. In this article, “TLS” refers to the protocol and “certificate” refers to the file that proves a server’s identity.

What TLS protects
TLS does three jobs on the path between a browser and your server:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Encryption: data exchanged between the visitor and the server is unreadable to anyone observing the network, such as someone on a shared Wi-Fi network.
- Server authentication: the browser checks that the certificate was issued for the hostname the visitor typed and by a authority it trusts. This is what protects against a fake server impersonating your domain.
- Integrity: the connection detects whether data was altered in transit.
What TLS does not do is inspect the content of a request. Once a request arrives at your server over a valid TLS connection, TLS has finished its job. A malicious request sent through an encrypted connection looks, to TLS, like any other encrypted request.

What a web application firewall protects
A WAF sits in front of a web application and evaluates incoming web and API requests against rules. Cloudflare’s WAF documentation describes the idea this way: “A Web Application Firewall or WAF creates a shield between a web app and the Internet.” (Cloudflare, “Concepts · Cloudflare Web Application Firewall (WAF) docs,” last updated April 16, 2026.)
Rules can match request properties such as the IP address, URL path, headers, and body content. Based on those properties, a rule can allow, challenge, or block a request. Common targets include SQL injection, which tries to pass database commands through form fields or URLs, and cross-site scripting, which tries to inject script into pages that other visitors load.

A WAF has limits that matter in practice:
- It catches what its rules describe. Novel attacks, logic flaws in your own code, and weak passwords are outside its reach.
- It does not encrypt anything. A WAF that inspects requests over plain HTTP still leaves visitors’ traffic exposed on the network.
- Rules need tuning. Overly broad rules block legitimate visitors, which is a false positive, while narrow rules let real attacks through.
Side-by-side comparison
| Question | TLS (SSL certificate and settings) | Web application firewall |
|---|---|---|
| What it inspects or protects | The connection and data in transit; supports server authentication and integrity checks. | Incoming requests, evaluated against managed and custom rules. |
| Problem it addresses | Eavesdropping, tampering on the network path, and impersonation of your server. | Malicious or unwanted request patterns aimed at the application. |
| What it does not do | Does not decide whether an encrypted request is harmless. | Does not encrypt the visitor’s connection. |
| Typical implementation | A certificate, TLS settings, and HTTPS enforcement. If the site is proxied, settings on both the visitor-facing and origin-facing legs. | Managed rule sets, custom rules, and request filtering at a network edge or on the server. |
| Main setup risks | Expired or mismatched certificates, missing redirects, and mixed content. | Rule scope, tuning, and false positives. |

Setting up both without leaving gaps
Step 1: Install a valid certificate and confirm the hostname
- Obtain a certificate that covers every hostname you serve, such as both
example.comandwww.example.com. - Check the expiry date and set a renewal reminder, or confirm that your host or CDN renews automatically.
- Load each hostname in a browser and confirm the padlock appears with no certificate warning.
Step 2: Enforce HTTPS, not just availability
A working certificate does not force visitors onto HTTPS. Plain HTTP requests can still reach the site unless you redirect them. Cloudflare’s guidance on enforcing HTTPS connections and its “Always Use HTTPS” setting (last updated April and August 2026) describe this redirect. After enabling it:

- Test that
http://example.comlands on the HTTPS address with a single redirect. - Check for redirect loops, which often appear when a proxy and the origin both try to force HTTPS.
- Scan pages for mixed content: images, scripts, or stylesheets loaded over
http://on an HTTPS page. Browsers may block these resources or show warnings, and the browser’s developer console lists them.
Step 3: Protect both legs when a proxy sits in front
If a CDN or proxy service stands between visitors and your server, there are two TLS connections: visitor to the proxy edge, and proxy edge to your origin. Each one needs protection. Cloudflare’s encryption modes documentation describes the Full (strict) setting for this arrangement. In Full (strict), the proxy validates the origin certificate, so the origin must meet these conditions:
| Origin requirement | What fails if it is missing |
|---|---|
| HTTPS is served on the origin | The proxy cannot complete an encrypted connection to the origin. |
| Certificate is not expired | Validation fails on the proxy-to-origin leg. |
| Certificate is from a trusted certificate authority or Cloudflare Origin CA | The proxy does not trust the origin’s certificate. |
| Certificate name matches the hostname | The proxy rejects the certificate even when it is otherwise valid. |
When these prerequisites are unmet, Cloudflare reports error 526 to visitors. These specifics apply to Cloudflare’s service. Other proxies and hosts use different modes and error pages, so check their own documentation.

Step 4: Turn on WAF protection and tune it
- Start with managed rules, then review what they block in the security logs before tightening anything.
- Add custom rules for paths that matter to your application, such as login or checkout pages, and narrow them to the methods and paths they need.
- When a legitimate visitor or a known service is blocked, find the matching rule in the logs and create an exception scoped to that rule, not a site-wide allow.
Cloudflare’s application security material treats the WAF as one layer alongside DDoS protection, bot defenses, API security, and client-side script monitoring. Each covers a different risk, so a WAF is not a substitute for those controls where your site needs them.
Which do you need?
- Every public website needs TLS if it collects logins, forms, payments, or personal data, and modern browsers treat HTTP pages with increasing suspicion. Certificate and HTTPS enforcement is the baseline.
- A WAF is worth evaluating when the site runs a database-backed application, accepts user input, has an API, or is a frequent target of automated attacks. A static brochure site that serves only files has a smaller request-level attack surface.
- If you are unsure, start with TLS and HTTPS enforcement, which are low-cost to configure, then add a WAF once you can review its logs and maintain its rules.
Neither control replaces software updates, strong authentication, or secure code. They reduce different classes of risk, and the combination is what protects a site in practice.
