Your Speed Test Lies: Measuring Latency on iPhone Without Root, and the ICMP Bug That Made Two Pings Swap Replies

You can time ICMP echo round trips from an iPhone app without root, but the number is only as trustworthy as the code that pairs each reply with the probe that caused it. In a developer report from 2 October 2026, a concurrent test credited a gateway’s reply to a different target’s probe, producing an apparent near-zero round trip even though that target never answered. The fix is to accept only the Echo Reply that matches your identifier and sequence number, keep listening past unrelated replies, and run a single deadline for the whole wait. A healthy network can still produce a wrong reading if the code skips that matching step.

Why a ping reading can be wrong even when the network is fine

A ping result is a claim that one specific probe left the phone, reached something, and returned after a given delay. If the app attaches a reply to the wrong probe, the claim is false while the path itself is working. The error sits in the measuring code, not in the connection, which is why retesting the same way often reproduces it and why a single good number can look convincing.

Matching is not the only source of distortion. Delay can also accumulate in the app’s own scheduling, in the iOS networking stack, in the Wi-Fi driver and link, at the access point, and further out in the network. One end-to-end number cannot tell you which of those layers contributed, so it should not be read as a diagnosis.

What you can measure on iPhone without root

An ordinary app can take three kinds of timing measurement. They describe different work, so their numbers should not be compared as if they were the same thing.

Probe What it times What it can tell you What it cannot tell you
ICMP Echo Request and Echo Reply (unprivileged datagram socket, SOCK_DGRAM with IPPROTO_ICMP, as used in the reported test) Round trip of one echo probe and its reply Whether a host answers ICMP and how long one probe took to return Whether the service you use is healthy, or whether a silent host is down; ICMP may be filtered
TCP connection to a port such as 443 (BSD sockets or Network framework) Time to complete the TCP handshake to that port Whether the port accepts connections, and how long the handshake took A pure ICMP round-trip value, because the handshake is additional protocol work
HTTPS request and response Time for a real request to complete What an application-level request experiences The network path alone, since it includes work above the network layer

Apple Developer Technical Support recommends low-level BSD sockets or the Network framework when you need to simplify a latency investigation. For receive timing, its guidance describes SO_TIMESTAMP with SCM_TIMESTAMP for BSD sockets, and shouldCalculateReceiveTime with receiveTime for Network framework. These facilities record when a packet was received rather than when your code got around to reading it, which removes a common source of inflated readings. Apple’s archived SimplePing sample is a reference for ping-style implementation. Apple’s own guidance notes that iOS supports Ethernet but that Ethernet is not commonly used with iOS.

The Network framework’s high-level connection timing is not an ICMP ping. If your app reports a connection time, label it as a TCP or TLS setup time, not as ping.

The concurrent-reply bug

On 2 October 2026, a developer posting as u/SquarePutrid1435 on r/iOSProgramming described a problem with unprivileged ICMP datagram sockets on Darwin. In their testing, each process-local socket received Echo Replies that reached the host, without kernel filtering by identifier. Their receive code performed one receive per send and accepted whichever Echo Reply arrived next.

The failure appeared when they ran a gateway ping every 50 ms alongside another probe. The other probe sometimes recorded the gateway’s reply microseconds after it was sent, an apparent near-zero round trip, even when its own target did not answer. The author also reported swapped samples under concurrent load. As they put it, “With a single ping that’s fine.” The problem only shows once probes overlap.

  • 【Charger & Adapter Analysis】 Tests USB-C/Lightning power adapters, supporting PD (Power Delivery) and QC2.0/3.0 fast charging protocols. Measures open voltage, rise/fall time, and maximum output wattage. Detects if the charger is original, certified, or copycat, helping users avoid unsafe adapters.
  • 【Advanced Charging Simulation】 Features PD Decoy and QC Decoy functions, allowing manual switching of output voltages for in-depth charger testing. Provides real-time voltage/current graphs under load, ensuring reliable performance for phones, tablets, and other electronics.

Keep the status of this report clear. It is a first-person technical account of one developer’s implementation and test setup, with the 50 ms interval being their own choice. It is not an Apple statement, and it is not a controlled survey across iOS versions. Apple’s published guidance on this does not confirm the kernel behavior. Treat the bug as a reproduction to check on the iOS versions and socket setup you actually ship to, not as a rule that applies to every device.

How to match replies and enforce timeouts

Whether or not your target OS shows the bug, a correct receive loop does the following. The steps follow the approach described in the report and in the protocol definition.

  1. Check the message type first. Accept only ICMP Echo Replies. Discard any other ICMP message that arrives on the socket.
  2. Compare the identifier and sequence number to the probe you sent. RFC 792 defines these fields in Echo and Echo Reply messages, and the replying host returns them unchanged. Verify on each OS version and socket type you target how the identifier behaves. Do not assume it matches Linux behavior.
  3. Keep receiving after an unrelated reply. A reply that belongs to another probe is not a timeout and not the end of your wait. Read the next packet and check it the same way.
  4. Set one deadline per probe. When you send, calculate the deadline once, for example as send time plus your timeout. Before each receive, pass only the remaining time, calculated as the deadline minus the current time. The report warns that resetting the full timeout after every skipped reply can stretch the actual wait far beyond the intended limit.
  5. Check the timeout value’s meaning in your code path. The report states that a zero timeval passed to SO_RCVTIMEO means no timeout. Confirm that against the API contract for your exact call before relying on it, and set the value explicitly rather than depending on that behavior.
  6. Record receive time when the platform provides it. Use SO_TIMESTAMP or the Network framework receive time. If you cannot, note that your RTT includes app scheduling delay.
  7. Add extra checks where the socket allows them. You can compare the reply’s source address with your target, or place a random cookie in the echo payload and require it in the reply. Whether either check is available depends on the socket behavior and your implementation.

What RTT, jitter, and packet loss say and do not say

  • Round-trip time (RTT) is how long one probe took to go out and come back. A single low value shows that one probe was answered quickly. It does not describe the connection as a whole.
  • Jitter describes how much consecutive measurements change from one to the next. A low average can conceal periodic jitter, so a steady average is not evidence of stable delay.
  • Standard deviation describes spread around the session average. Report it with the average, so spikes are visible.
  • Packet loss is the share of probes that received no matching reply. Because ICMP can be filtered, a missing reply shows that no matching echo came back. It does not show that the host or network path is broken.

None of these figures measures throughput, the time an application takes to respond, or how a video call or game will behave. Use them to describe the path’s delay and reply behavior, and use HTTPS or application timings for the user-facing experience.

Is it my Wi-Fi or the internet?

Apple’s advice for isolating delay is to simplify the environment first. In Apple Developer Forums, Quinn “The Eskimo!” of Developer Technical Support wrote: “The first step is to simplify the environment as much as possible.” That thread, “Investigating Network Latency Problems,” was first posted in 2015 and revised through 2022. Its suggestions are diagnostic guidance, not proof that any single layer caused a particular delay.

  1. Turn Bluetooth off for the Wi-Fi test. In Settings, open Bluetooth and switch it off, then run the same test again.
  2. Remove libraries from the initial test. Use a minimal test path, such as a low-level socket or UDP, so that frameworks and user-space code do not add their own timing.
  3. Measure the local gateway first. Run the same ICMP test against your router’s address, then against a public address, then against the service you care about.
  4. Run the staged checks in order. Confirm the interface is up, resolve DNS, send ICMP, attempt TCP to port 443, then issue a real HTTPS request. Each stage isolates a different failure.
  5. Repeat at different times and on a different network. A single run cannot separate a temporary condition from a persistent one.
Pattern you see What it suggests Next check
Gateway RTT high or variable, and public-address results look similar Delay is likely on the local link or access point Repeat with Bluetooth off; try a wired comparison if your iPhone and adapter are compatible
Gateway fine, public ICMP silent, but TCP to port 443 and HTTPS succeed ICMP is probably filtered somewhere on the path Use TCP and HTTPS timings for that target instead of ping
Gateway fine, public ICMP consistently slow, and HTTPS also slow Delay lies beyond your local network, but one number cannot assign it to your ISP Repeat at other times and on another network before drawing conclusions
DNS stage fails Name resolution, not the echo path Test resolution separately from ICMP

A wired comparison can help separate Wi-Fi conditions from the rest of the path. Apple’s guidance states that iOS supports Ethernet, while noting it is not commonly used with iOS. It does not certify any particular adapter or model, so confirm that your adapter and connector work with your iPhone before testing. A wired run changes the link under test. It does not change the reply-matching logic, so it cannot fix the concurrent-reply bug.

Some vendor documentation for iOS network tools, including Latency Labs’ “Latency for iOS” and SSHive’s network utility pages (both accessed 7 October 2026), describes per-probe results, loss, and staged TCP and HTTPS checks. Those pages describe the vendors’ own products and are not independent tests, so judge any tool by whether it shows the matching and timing details above.
