The VM must be running, and its network must allow your connection. The steps below focus on cloud-hosted Linux VMs; exact usernames, key setup, and connection options depend on the provider and image.
Before connecting, identify the VM and your access details
Find out which provider hosts the VM, whether it runs Linux, and whether it has a public IP address. You will also need the login username and the authentication method configured for that VM. A provider console or CLI may handle some connection setup for you, but it still needs an authorized identity and a working route to the VM.

- Address: Use the VM’s public address for a direct internet connection, or its internal address when you have a private route.
- Username: Use the account name configured for that VM image or account. Do not assume every distribution or provider uses the same name.
- Authentication: For key-based access, use the private key corresponding to a public key configured for the VM. Never share or paste your private key.
- Network access: Confirm that the VM is ready and that firewall rules or security groups permit SSH from your client.
Choose a connection route
Use a local SSH client for direct access
If your computer can reach the VM’s public IP address and the VM permits your connection, use an SSH client such as OpenSSH. This gives you a terminal session without requiring a provider-specific browser interface. You manage the key and connection details yourself.

Use the provider’s console, CLI, or browser connection
Provider tools can reduce manual setup, but their behavior differs. Google Cloud documents console SSH, which creates an ephemeral key, and gcloud compute ssh, which creates a persistent key. Google’s console and CLI configure connections on the user’s behalf. AWS also documents browser-based EC2 Instance Connect and Systems Manager Session Manager as alternatives to a local SSH client. Azure documents SSH client and Cloud Shell options.

Use private networking or a managed bastion for an internal-only VM
A VM without a public IP address cannot be reached by simply targeting an internet-facing address. For Azure, the cited connection guidance points users without a public IP to Azure Bastion. Google documents reaching internal IP addresses over Cloud VPN or Cloud Interconnect from a connected network, and describes other connection options for internal-only VMs. The appropriate route depends on your cloud configuration.
Allow SSH traffic from your client
Check the VM’s network security rules before troubleshooting credentials. TCP port 22 is commonly used for SSH, but a VM can be configured to use another port. Azure’s guidance says to check for a rule allowing TCP port 22 from the connecting computer’s IP; AWS likewise requires the security group to allow incoming SSH from your IP. Where possible, restrict the source to the address or network that needs access rather than allowing connections from anywhere.

Provider-specific settings are not interchangeable: inspect the firewall, security group, or network rule attached to your VM, and confirm that it allows the actual SSH port and your intended source address.

ssh -i /path/to/private-key username@VM_ADDRESSReplace the key path, username, and address with the values for your VM. This syntax is also shown in AWS’s client instructions; treat it as a general shape, not a guarantee that every provider uses the same key setup, username, address, or flags. Follow your provider’s instructions for the exact connection details.
If your VM uses a nondefault SSH port, consult its provider or administrator instructions for the correct client option and port. Do not guess the port or assume that port 22 is enabled.

Troubleshoot a failed SSH connection in order
- Check VM status. Confirm that the VM has finished starting and is available. AWS lists instance readiness among the connection prerequisites.
- Verify the address and route. Check that you are using the right public or internal address. For a private address, make sure your client is connected to the required network or managed access service.
- Check the inbound rule. Confirm that the network rule permits the SSH port from your client’s source address. A missing or overly narrow rule can prevent the connection before authentication is reached.
- Verify the username. Confirm the account name for the VM’s image and configuration; do not substitute a username from a different provider or distribution.
- Verify the key or identity. Make sure the private key belongs to the public key configured for the VM, or that your provider-managed or certificate-based identity is authorized. AWS lists the private key and instance details among its prerequisites.
Use the right account after you connect
Do not assume that root SSH login is enabled or that enabling it is necessary. Google says public-image Compute Engine VMs generally do not allow root password login over SSH and recommends using sudo instead of enabling root login. That guidance is specific to the documented Google Compute Engine images; check your own distribution and provider configuration.
