Use a model-specific purge sanitization method when the SSD must remain usable. Consider cryptographic erase (CE) only when you can prove that encryption protected all sensitive data and that every relevant key and recovery path will be eliminated. If the drive is failed, unsupported, or too sensitive to trust for reuse, use a destruction process designed to make laboratory recovery infeasible.
Those choices are not interchangeable. An ordinary overwrite, a tool labeled “secure erase,” a key reset, and drilling a hole can have very different results on flash storage. The right decision depends on recovery resistance, whether you need the SSD again, the drive’s firmware and interface, encryption history, and the evidence you can retain that the operation completed.

The decision in one table
| Situation | Preferred direction | Confirm before acting |
|---|---|---|
| SSD will be reused or resold | Use a device-specific clear or purge method suitable for the data sensitivity. Prefer purge when feasible and stronger recovery resistance is required. | Exact SATA or NVMe model and firmware support; the manufacturer’s documented command or method; which media areas are covered; completion status; and a record of the serial number, operator and date. |
| SSD is fully encrypted and CE is proposed | CE can be efficient if its technical and historical prerequisites are satisfied. | Whether any sensitive data was ever stored in plaintext; encryption and module assurance; all data, wrapping and derivation keys; backups, escrow and external key servers; and how errors are reported. |
| SSD has failed, is unsupported, or must not leave recoverable data | Use destruction matched to the information category and the SSD’s construction, normally through a qualified service where organizational controls require it. | Whether the result is irreversibly unusable as storage, whether remnants could support laboratory recovery, and whether chain-of-custody and completion records are provided. |
| A utility simply says “secure erase” | Do not infer adequacy from the label. Identify the actual command and standard, then verify the result. | Regions addressed, device status and error behavior, manufacturer assurance, and alignment with your current policy or standard. |
The useful comparison is not which option sounds strongest or finishes fastest. Compare recovery resistance, reusability, dependence on encryption history and key management, trust in firmware, interface and failure support, and the quality of verification and records.

“Secure erase” is an overloaded product term. It may describe a vendor utility, an interface command, a controller operation, or a marketing label with no stated standard. Ask what the tool actually invokes and what parts of the media it reaches.

Clear versus purge
In media-sanitization terminology, clear uses logical techniques intended to make ordinary recovery difficult through the normal interface while leaving the medium usable. Purge is the stronger objective: make recovery infeasible with state-of-the-art laboratory techniques while potentially preserving the SSD for reuse. NIST states, “When possible, the purge sanitization method should be used instead of the clear sanitization method.” That sentence appears in NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 (September 2025).
For flash storage, a normal host overwrite is not automatically a purge. SSD controllers distribute writes through wear levelling and reserve spare cells. The logical block you overwrite is therefore not guaranteed to be the physical location that held an earlier copy. NIST warns that ordinary native read/write overwriting cannot reliably reach every prior location on flash media. Dedicated sanitize functions can address the medium more comprehensively, but users still have to assess the manufacturer’s implementation.
Why one overwrite is not a universal answer
A single pass, several passes, or a “zero fill” can overwrite blocks visible to the operating system and still leave data in remapped blocks, overprovisioned space, or failed cells. Repeating the same host writes does not remove the controller’s mapping uncertainty. It also increases wear without proving that all historical copies were touched. Do not turn an old hard-disk overwrite rule into a universal SSD rule.
How to perform a device-specific sanitization
There is no current, universal command sequence that applies to every SATA and NVMe SSD. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 deliberately moves away from publishing a broad tool-and-technique recipe. It recommends following IEEE 2883, applicable NSA specifications, or an organization-approved standard instead. IEEE describes technology-specific sanitization requirements and guidance in its storage-sanitation standard.
- Identify the exact device. Record the manufacturer, model, serial number, capacity, interface (SATA or NVMe), firmware revision and whether the drive is an internal device, an enclosure device or part of an array. A generic USB enclosure may hide the native sanitize interface.
- Classify the data and the outcome. Decide whether the SSD must be reused, whether purge is required instead of clear, and whether organizational, contractual or regulatory rules prescribe a particular method or service.
- Read the current implementation documentation. Look for the model-specific sanitize or purge function, the media regions it covers, prerequisites, expected status codes, interruption behavior and any limitations. Do not assume that two drives with the same interface expose the same operation.
- Use a direct, supported path. If the manufacturer requires a motherboard slot, a particular controller mode or a vendor utility, follow that requirement. If an adapter does not pass the native command, change the connection rather than substituting repeated overwrites.
- Run the operation with power protection. Follow the documented procedure, keep the device powered, and do not disconnect it while the controller reports that sanitization is in progress. An interrupted operation may leave an unknown state that requires starting over or treating the drive as unsupported.
- Capture the result. Save the tool’s completion or error status, command interface, date and time, operator, device identity, firmware and any media-area or key details the procedure reports. A progress bar alone is not evidence of coverage.
- Verify according to the selected standard. Use the manufacturer’s verification mechanism or the verification step required by your policy. A normal operating-system format or a quick read test does not independently prove purge-level sanitization.
- Release or quarantine the SSD only after review. If the operation fails, reports an unsupported feature or cannot establish which areas were covered, do not pass the drive to another user. Escalate to a documented alternative or destruction.
IEEE SA lists IEEE 2883-2022 as an active standard for logical and physical storage sanitization, and its catalog also lists IEEE 2883.1-2025 as recommended practice for applying those methods before reuse, resale or disposal. The catalog page does not expose every technical requirement, so its listing alone cannot establish that a particular SSD command is compliant.
When cryptographic erase is appropriate
Cryptographic erase sanitizes the keys that encrypt the data, or blocks access to those keys, instead of processing every flash cell. When implemented correctly, it can be far faster than media-wide techniques and can leave the SSD reusable. It is nevertheless a conditional purge method, not a generic reset button.

The plaintext-history test
NIST cites an ISO/IEC 27040 precondition: since the last appropriate sanitization, sensitive data must not have been stored on the medium in plaintext. CE only removes access to encrypted information. It cannot retroactively protect a file that was written before encryption was enabled, nor can it erase an unencrypted recovery partition, temporary area or earlier installation.

Ask when encryption became effective for every area that may contain sensitive data. A self-encrypting drive that was initialized without active encryption, or a computer that enabled full-disk encryption after it already held files, may fail this test for its earlier contents.
Account for the complete key hierarchy
Deleting one visible key is not necessarily enough. NIST discusses data-encryption keys, wrapping keys, derivation keys, copies and hierarchies. Determine which keys protect the data, which keys protect those keys, and where copies exist. Check for external key-management servers, escrow services, backup exports, recovery-key records, injected keys and administrative replicas. Any surviving path that can reconstruct or authorize the original keys weakens the CE result.
Check cryptographic assurance
Confirm the algorithm, implementation and module assurance documented for the SSD or encryption system. For federal agencies, NIST requires cryptographic modules validated to the current FIPS 140 standard when assurance conditions for a self-encrypting drive are being relied upon. That is a federal-agency requirement, not a blanket rule that every consumer must follow.
Document the CE event
For organizational use, record the device make, model and firmware; the encryption mode and relevant algorithms; the media areas covered; key generation, derivation, wrapping and sanitization details; escrow or injection history; the command interface; error handling; and the person who verified completion. Keep enough information to show why the plaintext-history and key-elimination conditions were met without retaining the secret keys themselves.
When physical destruction is the right choice
Destruction is appropriate when the SSD will not be reused, when it has failed or cannot expose a trustworthy sanitization function, or when the data category and policy do not permit relying on a reusable device. NIST defines destruction as making recovery infeasible with state-of-the-art laboratory techniques and preventing subsequent use of the medium for storage.

Why drilling or bending is not a certification
Bending, cutting or drilling can damage the enclosure while leaving flash packages, controller memory or portions of the NAND readable. A hole through a board does not demonstrate that every package and spare cell has been rendered unrecoverable. NIST also cautions that some shredding and pulverizing approaches can be inadequate above the lowest security categories.
Choose the destruction process by media and data category
NIST lists disintegration, incineration, melting, pulverizing and shredding among destruction techniques, but the required particle size, equipment and handling controls depend on the SSD’s construction and the sensitivity of the information. For regulated or enterprise environments, use the organization’s approved method or a qualified destruction service that can state what it does to SSD components and which security category it supports.
- Confirm that the process makes the SSD irreversibly unusable for storage, not merely difficult to install.
- Ask how controller chips, NAND packages, overprovisioned areas and remnants are handled.
- Maintain custody from collection through completion, especially when the drive leaves your site.
- Obtain a completion record identifying the device, method, date, operator or service, and any exceptions.
Do not present a household hammer, drill or shredder as equivalent to a documented destruction process. If the remnants could be examined in a laboratory, the method has not met a destruction objective.

Current standards position
NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 was published on September 26, 2025, and the official record says it supersedes Rev. 1. The revision takes a programmatic approach and replaces most detailed sanitization technique and tool guidance—while retaining CE guidance—with recommendations to follow IEEE 2883, NSA specifications or an organization-approved standard. Older Rev. 1 command tables should not be presented as universal current instructions.
Use the current publication and your applicable standard together. NIST provides definitions, objectives and CE conditions; IEEE 2883 provides the technology-specific standards direction; the SSD manufacturer supplies implementation details for the exact model. None of those sources, by themselves, proves that a named consumer utility, adapter or vendor implementation is suitable for your drive.

Common failure modes and what to do
The SSD is connected through USB and the sanitize option is missing
Many enclosures do not pass through native SATA or NVMe sanitize commands. Treat the missing function as an interface limitation, not proof that no function exists. Connect the drive through a supported native path described by the manufacturer, or select an approved alternative. Do not substitute ordinary overwriting without reassessing the security objective.

A successful-looking completion without a stated scope leaves the result ambiguous. Preserve the log, identify the command actually used, and ask the manufacturer or your security authority what regions and status codes it represents. If coverage cannot be established, quarantine the SSD or destroy it according to policy.
Encryption was enabled after the drive was already used
Assume the plaintext-history precondition is not met for earlier sensitive data unless reliable records prove otherwise. Use a device-specific purge method or destruction instead of CE for that device.
The SSD has failed and cannot accept commands
A failed controller can prevent both logical sanitization and reliable verification. If recovery resistance is required and no documented hardware-level method applies, move directly to an approved destruction process. Preserve custody and record the failure as part of the disposition.
A CE operation leaves recovery keys in an external system
Sanitize or revoke every relevant escrowed, backed-up, injected or externally managed key according to the key-management system’s procedure. If an external recovery path cannot be eliminated or evidenced, CE does not provide the assurance you need.
Practical recommendations by reader
Home user selling a working SSD
Identify the exact model, consult its current manufacturer instructions, and use a supported sanitize or purge operation through a native interface. Save the completion result and do not rely on a quick format. If the drive is encrypted, CE is only suitable when you know encryption covered the entire history of sensitive use and no recovery key remains elsewhere.
Best Value
IT team rotating fleet devices
Define a standard procedure by model and interface, restrict who can perform it, require logs and verification, and maintain an exception path for failed or unsupported drives. Record serial numbers and firmware so a later audit can connect each asset to its sanitization result. Separate reusable purge workflows from destruction workflows rather than allowing technicians to choose based on a utility’s label.
Organization handling regulated or highly sensitive data
Map each data category to an approved standard, determine when purge is mandatory, and preapprove qualified destruction services for exceptions. For CE, involve the key-management owner; for destruction, involve the records or security owner. Retain custody and completion evidence for the period required by policy.
Bottom line
Choose device-specific purge sanitization when the SSD must survive and you can verify the manufacturer’s implementation. Choose cryptographic erase only when encryption covered every sensitive write and all keys and recovery paths can be eliminated and documented. Choose physical destruction when the drive is failed, unsupported, not needed again, or too sensitive to leave in reusable form. If you cannot establish which areas a “secure erase” operation covers or cannot prove CE’s prerequisites, treat that uncertainty as a reason to escalate or destroy—not as evidence that a generic overwrite was enough.

Can I use the same secure-erase command for every SATA and NVMe SSD?
No. The command, firmware behavior, supported interface and covered media areas are model-specific. Follow the exact manufacturer documentation and a current sanitization standard.
Does enabling full-disk encryption today make cryptographic erase safe for old files?
Not necessarily. CE does not retroactively encrypt plaintext written before encryption was active, so earlier sensitive data can fail the required plaintext-history condition.
Is drilling one hole through an SSD enough?
No. Partial damage can leave flash packages or controller components recoverable. Use a destruction process whose capability matches the data category and retain completion evidence.
