CSAI puts more ad selection and playback work in the client player; SSAI stitches ads into the stream or a personalized manifest before delivery; SGAI sends server-side ad guidance that the player follows, with retrieval or playback work remaining client-side in some implementations. The distinction matters because it changes what your player must do, where your ad infrastructure runs, how transitions are handled, and how you measure delivery. SGAI is not one uniform stitching design, so compare the actual vendor workflow rather than relying on the label alone.
How the three ad-insertion models differ
| Approach | Where decisions and retrieval happen | What the player receives | Practical strengths | Practical considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CSAI (client-side ad insertion) | The client is substantially involved in ad requests and handling. | The player handles an ad separately from the content playback flow. | Supports player-driven ad behavior and formats. | Requires platform-specific player integration and ad logic; client behavior can affect transitions and ad delivery. AWS describes the architecture and tradeoffs. |
| SSAI (server-side ad insertion) | Ad decision calls and stitching take place in server-side video infrastructure upstream of delivery. | A personalized stream or manifest with ads stitched into the presentation. | Can simplify player requirements and make transitions less visible. | The server-side insertion path must scale, and tracking still needs a deliberate implementation. AWS contrasts client- and server-side insertion. |
| SGAI (server-guided ad insertion) | The server supplies ad decisions or pod information; the client follows guidance and may retrieve or play separate ad media. | Content plus ad-playlist references or timed instructions, depending on the implementation. | Leaves some work with the player and can support flexible break handling. | The player and service must agree on guidance, markers, timing, and playback behavior. Vendors use different arrangements. Google’s SGAI documentation and AWS MediaTailor’s overview describe their respective approaches. |
How CSAI works
In a CSAI workflow, the player is central to ad handling: it requests or receives an ad response, plays the ad, and returns to the program. That gives the client scope for player-specific ad behavior, but a service must implement and maintain the relevant logic across the devices and player SDKs it supports. An AWS architecture comparison locates the CSAI ad call at the client, in contrast to SSAI’s upstream call. Read AWS’s SSAI comparison.

How SSAI works
A server-side video pipeline detects an ad opportunity, requests an ad, and stitches selected ad media into the delivered stream or a personalized manifest. In a common AWS MediaTailor pattern, the service retrieves a content manifest, queries an ad decision service, and returns a personalized manifest through a CDN. The player can receive a continuous presentation rather than managing the same content-to-ad handoff itself. AWS explains the workflow.

Ad decision and insertion services may create scaling demands. Stitching also does not make measurement automatic: impression and quartile reporting depend on the product’s manifest, player, and measurement implementation. The IAB glossary describes server-side stitching as joining content and ads at the server rather than the browser, and notes ad-blocking mitigation as a possible benefit—not a guarantee that every ad blocker will be defeated. How SGAI works—and why the label varies
SGAI keeps ad decisions server-side while giving the player instructions about when or how to handle ads. In Google’s documented workflow, the player schedules requests for pre-conditioned ads served as a pod manifest; an optional server-inserted marker can guide the schedule. Google’s April 7, 2025 announcement describes client-side stitching, in which the app proactively loads an ad break, and server-side stitching, in which a packager or encoder places an ad marker pointing to an ad manifest in the content manifest. Google’s implementation documentation · Google Ads Developer Blog announcement.
AWS MediaTailor describes guided insertion using ad references in separate playlists rather than stitching them directly into media playlists. Its player-select mode lets a player choose stitched or guided delivery when starting a session; stitched-only mode requires SSAI. These examples show why SGAI should be evaluated as a specific product workflow, not assumed to mean one universal arrangement. What a streaming publisher should compare
Player and device control
Can your team update the player across every target device? Can those players process timed metadata, ad markers, and separate playlists reliably? CSAI places more ad workflow in the client; SGAI also relies on client behavior, though guided by server decisions.

Ad formats and break behavior
Decide whether standard pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll breaks are sufficient or whether you need formats such as squeezebacks or L-banners. Google says its SGAI approach can support formats including those examples, but that is vendor-specific; verify compatibility for the exact player and devices you plan to support. Google’s announcement.
Continuity and scaling
Determine whether ads must be presented as part of one continuous stream or whether a player-managed switch is acceptable. Then compare server-side decisioning and stitching load with the client work and bandwidth involved in guided retrieval. AWS says SGAI can help with some SSAI scaling challenges; that does not establish a universal capacity or cost advantage. Validate the outcome in your own architecture. Measurement and operational ownership
- Specify which component fires impression and ad-progress events, and how those events are reconciled with ad-server reports.
- Assign ownership for ad markers, manifest generation, ad transcoding, CDN behavior, player SDK integration, and incident diagnosis.
- Test transitions and reporting on the actual device mix; the cited architecture sources do not establish a provider-neutral winner for measurement accuracy or comparative performance.
Which approach should you choose?
There is no universal winner in the cited architecture descriptions. Choose based on control of your clients, desired ad formats, acceptable transition behavior, server capacity, measurement design, and who will operate each part of the workflow.
- Consider CSAI when you need player-driven ad behavior and can support the required client integrations across your device range.
- Consider SSAI when server-side stitching and a continuous playback presentation fit your delivery model, and you can operate and scale the insertion path.
- Consider SGAI when server-side ad decisions paired with player-directed retrieval or playback suit your architecture; inspect the vendor’s exact marker, playlist, and stitching behavior before committing.
The available sources describe architectures and vendor-stated tradeoffs, not a neutral head-to-head study quantifying latency, fill, cost, scale, or measurement across all three models. Treat claims such as “seamless,” “more scalable,” or “better measurement” as outcomes to validate in your own service.

Does StreamNeo use one of these ad-insertion models?
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock from uploaded videos. It is not an ad-insertion platform and does not stream from a camera. If your separate goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running, see StreamNeo: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud handles looping, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
