What Is Media Server Software? A Guide for Live Streaming

Media-server software receives, routes, adapts, or records live streams between sources and viewers. Learn how protocols fit together and when to self-host or use a managed service.

Media-server software receives live audio or video from an encoder, camera, or another source and makes it available to viewers or downstream systems. It can also route, proxy, record, play back, or adapt a stream. A media server is one possible part of a live-streaming setup—not a requirement for every stream.

What does a media server do for live streaming?

A simple way to picture the workflow is camera or encoder → media server → viewer/player, CDN, or another media system. The source sends media to the server; the server then makes it available to compatible destinations. Depending on the software and configuration, it may route the stream, proxy it from another source, record it, provide playback, or adapt it for delivery.

“Media server” describes a role, not one fixed feature set. For example, the MediaMTX project describes its software as a live media server and proxy for publishing, reading, proxying, recording, and playback. Those capabilities are specific to that project; check the documentation for whichever server you consider.

A media server does not necessarily encode video. It may pass a stream along or change its packaging between protocols while retaining the encoded audio and video. If it has to decode and re-encode the media, that is transcoding, which can require more processing and add delay.

What is the difference between streaming protocols?

Protocols and formats serve different points in the workflow: sending media into a system, transporting it between systems, or delivering it to a playback client. Their names are not interchangeable, and a server may support only some combinations.

Protocol or format Common role What to check
RTMP Often used by encoders to publish a source stream to a server, and for server-to-server delivery. It is primarily an ingest or transport choice, not generally a viewer playback format. Confirm the server’s supported variant and security options.
RTSP/RTP Common in IP-camera and network-video workflows. RTSP manages streaming sessions; RTP carries media, with RTCP used for control and reporting. Check that the camera’s session and media settings match what the server accepts.
SRT A live-stream transport option for contribution or moving media between systems. Check whether the connection uses caller or listener mode and whether encryption is configured. AWS MediaLive documents both SRT input modes and encrypted or unencrypted sources.
WebRTC Real-time audio/video communication with browsers or native applications, often chosen when interactive, low-delay playback matters. End-to-end delay depends on the whole system. Wowza’s implementation guidance states that media encryption is mandatory in its WebRTC implementation.
HLS / MPEG-DASH HTTP-based approaches for delivering live or on-demand streams to playback clients. Support depends on the implementation, container, and codec. HLS is used for adaptive HTTP delivery; do not assume every server supports every HLS or DASH combination.

In short, RTMP is often associated with getting a stream into a server, while HLS or DASH commonly deliver it to playback clients. A particular workflow can differ, so verify both ends rather than selecting a protocol by name alone.

Transmuxing versus transcoding

Transmuxing changes the package

Transmuxing repackages existing encoded audio and video into a different protocol or container without changing the underlying encoded media. It can help connect systems that accept different delivery formats without the full decode-and-re-encode process.

Transcoding changes the encoded media

Transcoding decodes and re-encodes audio or video, for example when a destination needs a different codec, resolution, or bitrate. It can improve compatibility or create alternate renditions, but it uses more compute and can add processing delay. If your workflow needs transcoding, account for both the server capacity and the latency it introduces.

Do you need a media server to livestream?

Not always. A basic setup may send an encoder’s stream directly to a managed streaming platform, which handles some server-side pipeline functions. A separate self-operated media server is useful when you need to route or proxy sources, connect systems with different protocols, record or play back streams, or control more of the media workflow.

Managed services also require compatible inputs and configuration; “cloud-managed” does not mean protocol and encoder settings disappear. For example, AWS documents RTMP and SRT input types for MediaLive, while Amazon IVS documents encoder setup through OBS using RTMPS or SRT.

How to choose a media server or managed service

Start with the source and destination you actually have, then work through the operational requirements. No one protocol or server is best for every live-streaming job.

  • Source and player compatibility: Confirm that the server accepts the camera or encoder’s output and that viewers or downstream systems can use its delivery format.
  • Latency target: Interactive communication and one-way viewing have different needs. Compare the entire path, including encoding, server processing, and playback buffering.
  • Transcoding requirement: Determine whether simple routing or transmuxing is enough, or whether a codec, resolution, or bitrate change is necessary.
  • Audience and scaling: Estimate expected concurrent viewers and understand how the server or managed service handles delivery and growth.
  • Operations: Self-hosting means configuring and maintaining the server. A managed service shifts some infrastructure operations to a provider, but still requires compatible sources and correct settings.
  • Security: Review authentication, access controls, and transport encryption for the source, server, and playback path.
  • Recording and monitoring: Check whether you need recording, playback, stream health visibility, or recovery procedures, and whether those functions are included.
  • Total cost: Include hosting or service charges, bandwidth, storage, compute for transcoding, and the time required to operate the system. Available capability descriptions alone do not establish a like-for-like cost or performance winner.

Self-hosted software and managed cloud services

Self-hosted: more control, more operations

A self-hosted option such as MediaMTX is relevant if you want to configure a live media router and can operate the server. The project documents publishing, reading, proxying, recording, playback, protocol conversion, and multiple client types. Consult its current documentation for the exact protocols and configuration supported by the version you plan to run.

Managed: provider-run infrastructure, configured inputs

Managed services can provide cloud-run pieces of the streaming pipeline. AWS MediaLive documents RTMP and SRT input options; Amazon IVS’s OBS setup guide documents RTMPS or SRT. These examples illustrate the need to match the encoder’s protocol and settings to the service. They do not establish that a managed service is always easier or cheaper than self-hosting.

Common setup problems to check

  • The server does not accept the source: Verify the source protocol and connection mode against the server’s supported inputs. For SRT, check caller/listener roles; for camera workflows, confirm RTSP session and RTP media compatibility.
  • The stream reaches the server but not the viewer: Check the server’s output protocol, player compatibility, and any required container or codec support. A format supported at ingest is not automatically supported for playback.
  • Playback delay is higher than expected: Identify whether transcoding or buffering is adding delay. Transcoding can increase processing time; WebRTC is designed for real-time communication, but the whole system determines actual latency.
  • Encrypted WebRTC does not connect: Review the implementation’s encryption requirements and configuration. Wowza’s documented WebRTC guidance requires media encryption.
  • Video quality or compatibility is wrong: Determine whether the workflow needs a different codec, resolution, or bitrate. Transcoding may address compatibility, but it adds compute and can affect delay.
  • A managed input fails: Match the encoder protocol and settings to the exact input type supported by the service; consult the provider’s current setup documentation for version- and service-specific requirements.

Protocol support, codec combinations, cloud input settings, and product capabilities can change. Check current vendor documentation for the product version and configuration you intend to deploy.
