What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your SRS-fed YouTube stream keeps disconnecting, don’t change bitrate at random. First find out whether the interruption is visible to the creator or only to viewers; then compare encoder output, SRS status and logs, YouTube’s current ingest URL and protocol, and the outbound network at the time of the drop. The fault can occur at any of those points, and there is no single setting that fixes every disconnect.
Why does my YouTube stream keep disconnecting?
A live stream passes through several links: the encoder produces the feed, SRS relays or serves it, an outbound connection carries it to YouTube’s ingest server, and YouTube delivers it to viewers. A failure at any point can look like the same symptom. Start by locating who is affected rather than assuming the internet or bitrate is at fault.

- One viewer reports a problem: YouTube says the issue is likely that viewer’s device or connection.
- Several viewers on the same internet connection report it: investigate that shared viewer network.
- Viewers on different connections report it: the encoder may be involved; inspect the source and publishing chain.
- The creator sees the encoder or YouTube connection drop: focus on the encoder, SRS, ingest settings, and outbound path.
YouTube’s guidance does not establish a general percentage of disconnects attributable to network, RTMP settings, or encoder faults. The evidence has to come from your own timestamps, logs, and controlled checks.

OBS may be the encoder, but if it publishes to SRS rather than directly to YouTube, a reconnect message alone does not identify which connection failed. Determine the path first: OBS to SRS, then SRS to YouTube, or OBS directly to YouTube. Note the exact time of each interruption and compare OBS’s status with SRS logs and YouTube Live Control Room. Don’t expose your stream key in screenshots, logs, or support posts.

Check the encoder before changing settings
- Update the encoder software. YouTube recommends using a current version.
- Inspect the encoder’s live output. Check whether the picture and sound are actually poor or whether only the platform connection is dropping.
- If local output is poor, inspect the input/source path, encoder errors, and CPU load. Make a local recording and review it.
- If the local recording looks clean but the problem persists, YouTube suggests trying a different encoder as a diagnostic comparison.
A clean local preview or recording does not prove that the outgoing connection is healthy; it helps narrow the fault to a later part of the chain.
Check that SRS is running and inspect its logs
SRS sits in the media path, so an encoder can appear active while the relay process or its connection onward to YouTube is failing. The SRS project wiki demonstrates checking process status and following objs/srs.log, as well as an example FFmpeg publish to an SRS RTMP URL. Those examples are from v3-era documentation, not a guarantee of current, version-specific commands. Paths and process names depend on how you installed or deployed SRS.

- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Check the SRS process using the status method appropriate to your deployment.
- Open the configured SRS log and inspect entries immediately before, during, and after the interruption. The wiki’s example follows
objs/srs.log; your log may be elsewhere. - Compare the log timestamp with encoder reconnects and YouTube’s stream status. Look for whether the publisher disconnected, SRS stopped, or the outbound publishing connection failed.
- Record the SRS version, deployment type, encoder, exact error text, and event time before making a configuration change.
Changing a relay setting without matching it to a log symptom can obscure the original cause.
Verify the YouTube RTMP or RTMPS ingest URL
Use the server URL currently shown in YouTube Live Control Room, not an endpoint copied from an old setup. Confirm that the configured server and protocol match what YouTube provides, and check that the intended stream key is in use. Treat the key like a password.

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- For RTMPS: select or retrieve the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and configure the encoder or relay to use that exact URL and protocol.
- SSL certificate error: YouTube advises checking that both the URL scheme and server are
rtmps; for certain SSL errors, try specifying port443. - Connection timeout: verify the URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS.
- RTMP versus RTMPS: do not switch protocols by guesswork. Make the change only when it matches the endpoint and the client’s supported protocol.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers endpoint and RTMPS checks; it does not establish one universal port or protocol change for every disconnect.
Test the outbound connection
If the encoder’s picture and sound look healthy but the stream drops, YouTube identifies outbound internet strength as a next check: “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.” Run YouTube’s connection test. If it identifies a connection problem, YouTube recommends contacting your internet provider.

As a practical comparison—not a guaranteed YouTube fix—try publishing over Ethernet and compare the result with Wi-Fi under otherwise similar conditions. If only one path fails, that helps isolate the local network route; if both fail, continue comparing the encoder, SRS, ingest URL, and logs. A cable such as Cat 6 is optional for this test, not a required repair.
Use error messages as clues, not universal diagnoses
A 2023 SRS GitHub issue describes repeated RTMP reconnects in a particular SRS 4.0.268 and DJI M30 setup, with an invalid avc sample length=0 error during HLS video handling. The issue author reported apparently good Wi-Fi but could not rule out internet quality or device bandwidth. That case is a reason to compare your own timestamped logs; it does not show that this error explains all SRS disconnects or prescribe a general fix.
