Short answer: the current SRS project README does not list Windows as a supported platform, and the official SRS sources do not provide an end-to-end, Windows-native recipe for looping a prerecorded video to YouTube Live. You can still use SRS cautiously in a supported Linux environment or container as a relay, but for one loop stream it may be simpler to publish directly from OBS or FFmpeg. This guide explains both architectures and how to configure and test the YouTube output without treating an unverified Windows setup as supported.
What SRS does—and whether it runs natively on Windows
SRS is a real-time media server, not a video-looping application. Your prerecorded file or playlist is the media source; OBS or FFmpeg can publish that media; SRS can receive and relay a stream; YouTube Live is the destination. Each component has a separate role.
The current SRS project README lists Linux and macOS as supported platforms, not Windows. Its examples show OBS publishing to rtmp://localhost/live with the stream key livestream, and FFmpeg publishing a file to an SRS RTMP URL. The separate SRS v7 LTS getting-started guide documents a Linux-oriented build flow. These establish SRS’s general publishing model, not a supported native Windows installation or a tested Windows-to-YouTube relay. See the SRS project README and SRS v7 LTS getting-started guide.
So, if by “SRS on a Windows PC” you mean installing and running SRS directly in Windows, the consulted official material does not establish that workflow. A cautious alternative is to run SRS in a supported Linux environment or container, then publish to it from OBS or FFmpeg. That adds another service to configure and monitor; the sources do not show that SRS is necessary for a single loop stream or document a complete Windows-hosted relay configuration.

Choose an architecture before setting up the loop
| Approach | How it works | When it makes sense | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS or FFmpeg directly to YouTube | The encoder reads or plays the prerecorded video and sends the stream to YouTube Live using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. | A single loop stream where you do not need an intermediate media server. | The Windows PC, encoder, and network must remain available for the stream to continue. |
| OBS or FFmpeg to SRS, then onward to YouTube | The publisher sends media to SRS; SRS serves as an intermediate media server or relay, with an output configured toward YouTube. | A setup that genuinely needs SRS’s media-server role or protocols. | The official sources cited here do not provide a complete Windows-hosted relay workflow. You must determine and test the environment, output configuration, and recovery behavior. |
If your goal is simply to send a prerecorded loop from a Windows computer to YouTube, begin with direct publishing. Add SRS only if you have a specific reason for the extra relay layer. The SRS examples support publishing to an SRS RTMP endpoint, but should not be mistaken for a complete YouTube relay recipe.
Check YouTube and Windows requirements first
Confirm that the channel can go live
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so check access well before your planned stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes the setup and activation timing; its live-streaming tips cover channel eligibility.
Check whether the PC can handle the encoder workload
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as basic requirements. Those minimums do not guarantee that a particular PC can stream at a chosen resolution and frame rate. CPU or GPU load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard and test the actual video and settings you plan to use; do not infer performance from the minimum requirements alone. See the OBS system requirements.

Prepare the video and network
- Use a video file or playlist that you have the rights to stream. A loop does not make copyrighted material permissible.
- Check that the media plays correctly from beginning to end, including its audio. Test transitions or restarts if you intend to play multiple files.
- Use a reliable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the stream’s bitrate. Wired Ethernet can be a convenient choice for a stationary PC, but YouTube does not require it.
- There is no established requirement here for a webcam, microphone, capture card, or hardware encoder for a prerecorded loop. Equipment depends on the production; expensive gear is not inherently required to begin.
YouTube’s streaming tips discuss connection reliability, bandwidth headroom, and testing.

The steps below show the supported shape of the workflow. Direct OBS or FFmpeg publishing avoids the extra SRS layer. If you insert SRS, use a supported environment and treat the relay configuration as something to validate yourself rather than a Windows recipe established by the cited documentation.
- Enable live streaming and create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create a stream or select one you have already made, and choose its encoder setup. If this is your first live stream, allow for activation time.
- Copy the destination details from YouTube. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Decide whether SRS is actually in the path. For direct publishing, enter YouTube’s destination details in OBS or your FFmpeg publishing command. For a relay design, publish first to the SRS RTMP endpoint in the environment where SRS is running, then configure and validate the onward YouTube output. SRS’s example local address is
rtmp://localhost/liveand its example stream key islivestream; those are SRS example values, not your YouTube credentials. - Set the encoder for the source and the connection. Choose the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, and keyframe interval using the guidance below. Avoid setting a bitrate your sustained upload connection cannot carry with headroom.
- Start sending and inspect the preview. Start the encoder or relay output. In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube to receive the signal and show its preview. Check the video, audio, and stream-health indicators before selecting the control to go live.
- Test the actual loop and recovery behavior. Use representative motion and audio, allow the file to reach its end, and confirm what happens when playback restarts. If using SRS, test both the publisher-to-SRS leg and the SRS-to-YouTube leg. Do not assume a restart or dropped connection will recover seamlessly.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. It says a compromised stream key can be reset. The SRS project’s README examples show the SRS-side publishing pattern, but do not document the full relay chain above.

YouTube encoder settings for a prerecorded loop
YouTube’s current encoder guidance accepts RTMP or RTMPS, recommends RTMPS, and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video at up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (not exceeding 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Set the encoder to match the media and what the PC can sustain. A higher setting is not automatically better if it causes dropped frames or an unstable upload. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
| H.264 output listed by YouTube | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s guide values, not guaranteed outcomes. They apply to the listed H.264 resolution and frame-rate cases; use the full current YouTube settings table for other combinations. YouTube’s encoder settings page also advises CBR and the keyframe interval described above.

Planning for long streams, restarts, and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish automatic archiving for longer streams, indefinite 24/7 continuity, or seamless recovery after a disconnect. If you want a loop to run for extended periods, plan how you will segment it into streams under 12 hours, restart the encoder, monitor the stream, and handle resulting archives. Test the whole sequence rather than assuming that a file repeating locally will keep a YouTube broadcast uninterrupted.

For an SRS relay, also decide how you will detect a failure at either end: the source-to-SRS publishing connection or the SRS-to-YouTube output. The cited SRS material does not specify a Windows-specific restart policy or guarantee recovery for this design. YouTube’s archive guidance is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what to check
- Live streaming is unavailable: check channel verification, recent live-streaming restrictions, and whether first-time activation has completed. YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no signal: verify that the encoder is sending to the server URL and stream key copied from the selected Live Control Room stream. If SRS is involved, check that the publisher reaches the correct SRS endpoint before troubleshooting the YouTube output.
- The stream is unstable or drops frames: lower the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the PC and connection can sustain. Check encoder load and leave the recommended upload headroom rather than using all measured upload capacity.
- The video arrives but has no sound: check the source file’s audio track, encoder audio selection, and whether the audio is audible in the Live Control Room preview.
- The loop stops or creates an unexpected interruption: test the file-end behavior, playlist transition, encoder restart, and (if used) both SRS connections. YouTube’s under-12-hour archive rule is not a promise of continuous 24/7 operation.
- The stream key may have been exposed: reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder or relay with the replacement key.
When diagnosing, change one setting at a time and use Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health information. YouTube recommends representative test streams and monitoring; see its encoder settings and testing guidance.
