First identify where buffering occurs: YouTube Live Control Room may be reporting an unstable incoming stream, or viewers may be buffering while watching a stream served by MediaMTX. Those are different paths and need different checks. MediaMTX routes streams between protocols; it can forward a feed to YouTube or serve a feed to viewers. “Indian broadband” describes your connection context, not a diagnosis—there is no basis here to blame a particular ISP or a national broadband condition without measurements from your setup.
First determine which stream is buffering
MediaMTX can sit between a source and YouTube, or deliver a stream directly to viewers. Start with the symptom rather than changing settings at random.

- YouTube ingest problem: YouTube Live Control Room reports an incoming-stream or stream-health issue, or the YouTube broadcast itself freezes, drops, or fails to stay healthy. Investigate the encoder, MediaMTX forwarding path, and outbound connection from the stream source.
- Viewer playback problem: YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream, but people watching a feed served from MediaMTX see buffering. Investigate the connection from MediaMTX to those viewers and the read protocol they use.
Before testing, note the MediaMTX version; whether it runs on a local computer or a remote server; the input and output protocols; resolution, frame rate, and bitrate; whether the source is connected over Ethernet or Wi-Fi; YouTube’s health messages; and any relevant MediaMTX log entries. This gives you a baseline for each controlled change.
Fix an unstable MediaMTX feed forwarded to YouTube
1. Measure upload capacity at the source
Test outbound bandwidth where the stream originates, not just download speed or the headline speed on the broadband plan. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection will sustain a stream: other people or devices sharing the connection can consume capacity, and performance may vary during the broadcast.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Compare the stream’s total bitrate with upload capacity during the time you intend to go live. If the connection cannot sustain the bitrate with headroom, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again. YouTube’s recommended H.264 live settings include 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder recommendations—not measurements of Indian broadband and not viewer download requirements. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder guidance before setting up a broadcast, as its recommendations and interface can change.
2. Reduce bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the stream
Use a resolution and bitrate your measured outbound connection can maintain, rather than selecting settings from the plan’s advertised speed. If the upload test or the stream’s health is inconsistent, reduce the bitrate first; if necessary, step down the resolution or frame rate as well. Make one change at a time, then observe YouTube’s incoming-stream health and MediaMTX logs during a fresh test. This helps distinguish a bandwidth limit from a separate configuration problem.

3. Check bitrate mode, keyframes, and audio
- Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoding.
- Keyframes: Set the interval to about two seconds and do not exceed four seconds between keyframes. YouTube warns that incorrect keyframe cadence can cause buffering.
- Tracks: Confirm the stream contains both video and audio. MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding guidance says YouTube silently rejects video-only streams.
After changing encoder settings, verify the resulting stream rather than assuming the encoder applied them. A sound picture and functioning local preview do not by themselves establish that YouTube is receiving the expected tracks or cadence.

4. Verify the current YouTube forwarding destination and key
If MediaMTX forwards the stream to YouTube, use the destination and stream key currently shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private. MediaMTX’s forwarding documentation recommends RTMPS for encryption, but its example endpoint and certificate fingerprint are specifically flagged as values that may no longer be current. Do not copy an old sample endpoint or fingerprint as guaranteed current; check the current YouTube details and certificate guidance, then configure the forward destination accordingly.

5. Read both ends of the connection
Check YouTube Live Control Room’s health messages alongside MediaMTX logs. MediaMTX says it usually detects packet loss and prints it in its logs. If packet loss appears, first check that the physical network has enough bandwidth. Possible remedies include reducing bitrate through recompression or improving the network path—for example, checking the router, cables, Wi-Fi, firewall, or network topology. A log entry is evidence to investigate, not proof by itself that the ISP is at fault.
6. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If the streaming computer or MediaMTX host is on Wi-Fi, run the same stream over Ethernet and compare the results. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streaming and notes that shared network use can limit an individual stream. Use a cable you already have if possible; a new cable is only relevant if you need one to run the comparison. Ethernet can help isolate a wireless problem, but it cannot fix insufficient upload capacity, a poor route, incorrect encoding, missing audio, or a bad forwarding configuration.

Fix buffering when viewers read from MediaMTX
If YouTube ingest is healthy—or the stream is not being forwarded to YouTube at all—test the playback path from the MediaMTX server to the affected viewers separately. Check whether the problem affects all viewers or only those on a particular network, and identify the read protocol they use. Do not treat a viewer-side buffer as proof that YouTube ingest is failing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHLS or WebRTC: choose for the playback path
MediaMTX describes HLS as generally higher latency than WebRTC, but less troublesome for connectivity because it avoids managing the additional ports WebRTC uses. If viewers cannot connect reliably over WebRTC, test HLS and check its connectivity; if lower latency matters and the required ports are available, investigate WebRTC. Switching protocols changes the viewer delivery path, not the quality of an incoming stream to YouTube.

MediaMTX’s configuration reference for v1.21.1 contains a comment that a player usually buffers three segments before reproducing the stream. That is a configuration comment, not a universal measured buffering duration, and it does not diagnose every player or setup. The reference is version-specific; confirm the configuration for the version you actually run.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you observe | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports an unstable incoming stream | Outbound capacity at the source; stream bitrate; YouTube health messages; MediaMTX logs | Measure upload during the stream, leave about 20% headroom, and lower bitrate or resolution if capacity is insufficient. |
| MediaMTX logs report packet loss | Whether the connection has sufficient upload capacity; router, cable, Wi-Fi, firewall, and topology | Reduce bitrate through recompression or improve the network path, then retest while monitoring logs. |
| The broadcast buffers despite apparently adequate bandwidth | CBR, keyframe interval, presence of both audio and video tracks, and current YouTube destination details | Use YouTube’s recommended encoder cadence, verify both tracks, and check the current RTMPS destination and key. |
| YouTube appears healthy, but viewers buffer on a MediaMTX feed | Viewer-to-server path and playback protocol | Test HLS and WebRTC as separate delivery options, accounting for HLS’s generally higher latency and WebRTC’s additional port requirements. |
| The stream works on Ethernet but not Wi-Fi | Wireless path and shared network use | Investigate the Wi-Fi connection and network load; do not treat this comparison alone as proof of an ISP-wide problem. |
| Only some viewers report buffering | Whether the viewers share a network, location, or read protocol | Compare their playback paths and protocols before changing the YouTube ingest encoder. |
