Choose WinDirStat for a Windows computer

How do their disk-usage views differ?

SquirrelDisk: sunburst or treemap

SquirrelDisk presents storage visually with a sunburst chart or a treemap. The project also highlights a live chart and a list that puts the largest folders first. These options suit users who want to navigate a visual hierarchy or quickly focus on large directories.

WinDirStat: directory tree, file types, and treemap

WinDirStat combines an interactive treemap with a sortable directory tree and an extension/type breakdown. This gives Windows users separate ways to inspect storage: by folder hierarchy, by file type, or through visual blocks. Which display is easier depends on whether you start with a large folder or a category of files.

Which tool has the investigation features you need?

WinDirStat for file-focused checks

WinDirStat’s repository documents duplicate detection, file monitoring, search and filtering, and scan controls, alongside cleanup actions. Those features make it a natural choice when the task goes beyond identifying large folders and includes finding or monitoring particular files. The project also documents scans of local drives, selected drives, folders, and command-line targets.

Its cleanup flow includes an optional secure-erase feature, according to the project’s product descriptions. These are vendor-described capabilities; availability and behavior should be checked in the current release before relying on them for a particular workflow.

Are they both free and open source?

Yes. The projects describe both tools as free and open source, but their licenses are not interchangeable: SquirrelDisk lists AGPL-3.0, while WinDirStat lists GPL v3 or later. If you plan to modify, redistribute, or incorporate either project’s code, read the applicable license rather than assuming the obligations are identical.

Is SquirrelDisk faster than WinDirStat?

No reliable speed ranking is established by the official descriptions cited here. A meaningful comparison would need to hold hardware, filesystem, scan target, permissions, and settings constant; scan times from different machines or configurations would not establish a general winner. Neither project’s feature description alone supports a claim that it scans faster.
