Squid Game is a scripted drama about fictional players facing lethal consequences. Squid Game: The Challenge is an unscripted competition in which real contestants play adapted games for a cash prize and leave the show when eliminated. It recreates the tension and imagery—not the fictional deaths.

Are the games real, and do players actually get hurt?
The competition and eliminations are real, but the show’s death-like imagery is produced. For season one, a motion-tracking system was used in Red Light, Green Light. When production systems and arbiters determined a player was out, an ink packet under the contestant’s shirt burst to mark the elimination. It was not a paintball hit or a real injury, according to Netflix Tudum’s production FAQ, published December 7, 2023.

The scripted series’ bridge is described as having ordinary and tempered glass, with a fatal fall as the fictional consequence of choosing incorrectly. The reality competition’s season-one bridge instead used clear acrylic panels and trapdoors. The pass-or-fail arrangement was set in advance and known to a small production group, with independent adjudicators overseeing the game.

Netflix says the fall shown on screen involved a stunt performer, a safety airbag, and visual effects that extended the apparent drop. Contestants’ elimination reactions were filmed before a stunt performer substituted for the fall. The reality set was not the lethal bridge depicted in the drama. Where the reality show gets its story
A scripted drama can build suspense around a protagonist and carefully composed character arcs. A reality contest depends more on what actual players do: form alliances, take risks, change strategy, or react to other contestants. Executive producer Stephen Yemoh said the first Red Light, Green Light round showed the team it had “an amazing story straight away.” Netflix Tudum reported that this season-one round reduced the field from 456 players to 197.

Those reactions are not the same as a scripted performance. Executive producer Toni Ireland said the players’ reactions were genuine. Editing and production shape how the competition is presented, but that alone is not evidence that contestants’ choices or eliminations were scripted.

How production creates immersion while managing safety
The reality series uses recognizable sets, rules, and visual cues to make contestants feel immersed in the competition. For season one, Netflix’s production account describes safety oversight and rules against violent or threatening behavior. It also says meals were catered and nutritionally balanced. These measures do not make the show’s stakes equivalent to the fictional drama’s: contestants compete for real, but they do not face the story’s lethal consequences.

Production details are specific to the season-one edition covered by Netflix’s 2023 explainers; they do not establish that every later season uses identical equipment or procedures. For a sense of the scale behind one location, Netflix’s FAQ says approximately 110 cameras operated in the dorm during a typical scene. That is a dorm-scene figure, not a count of cameras across the whole production.
