The right choice also depends on what you sell, where you sell it, how many people need staff access, and the combined cost of the subscription, payment processing, platform fees, and add-ons. This is a feature-and-plan comparison based on the platforms’ published guidance, not a report of hands-on testing.
How do Squarespace and Shopify differ?
Both platforms let businesses sell online, but their published plan guidance points to different priorities. Squarespace describes selling services, content, memberships, and physical products within its website plans. Shopify groups its plans around the needs of commerce businesses as they launch, grow, or handle higher sales volumes.

That distinction is more useful than asking which platform is universally better. A consultant who wants a polished site, appointment-related content, and a modest product range has different needs from a retailer coordinating a large catalog, staff, and a physical store.
- Squarespace: consider it when the website is the main brand or content destination and selling is one of several business activities. Its current plan guidance says products, content, and memberships can be sold on any of its Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced plans, with features and some fees varying by plan. Squarespace’s plan guidance and selling overview list the relevant categories and plan context.
- Shopify: consider it when the business is commerce-led and needs to weigh store growth, staff access, reporting, in-person selling, or international tools. Shopify presents Basic, Grow, and Advanced for different business stages, with Plus as another plan option. See its plan-selection guidance.
Which platform fits your business model?
Choose Squarespace for a site-led business that also sells
Squarespace’s published selling categories include services, content, memberships, and physical products. That makes it a plausible fit when visitors need to understand the brand, browse information, or engage with content as well as make a purchase. Check the plan details for the particular selling features and fees you need; the available plans and features can change.

Choose Shopify for a commerce-led operation
Shopify’s plan guidance frames Basic for new businesses ready to launch, Grow for businesses with consistent sales that need additional features such as advanced reports or more staff accounts, and Advanced for high-volume businesses seeking lower fees or businesses moving from another platform. These are the vendor’s plan-positioning descriptions, not a guarantee that a given tier will be economical for every store. Shopify says the point at which an upgrade saves money depends on location and whether Shopify Payments is used.
Let the sales workflow decide
List the channels you actually use: an online store, social or marketplace sales, pop-ups, or a permanent retail location. Then check whether the plan available in your country supports the workflow, payment methods, and staff access you need. Shopify’s pricing page lists in-person selling, staff allowances, international tools, and POS Pro among plan or add-on considerations; confirm the live local details before choosing. Shopify’s pricing page is localized and its feature and rate information is subject to change.

What should you compare before choosing?
Website purpose and customer journey
Write down what a visitor must do beyond buying: learn about a service, read or access content, join a membership, or explore a brand. Squarespace documents these selling categories alongside physical products. For either platform, verify that the specific plan supports the pages, selling format, and customer journey you intend to build.
Catalog, fulfillment, and daily operations
Estimate the number and types of products, how inventory is managed, how orders are fulfilled, and what shipping or tax workflows are required. The available source material does not establish a universal catalog-size threshold at which one platform becomes better. Compare the actual features and integrations you would use rather than assuming that a plan label alone settles the question.

Staff and reporting
Count the people who need accounts and identify the reports or permissions they require. Shopify explicitly positions added staff access and advanced reports as reasons a growing business might consider Grow. Check current plan limits and account permissions for your market; do not pay for a higher tier based on a need your team does not have.
International selling
If customers pay in different currencies or you sell across borders, verify payment availability, local currencies, market configuration, duties or tax handling, and any regional restrictions. Shopify documents that payment-processing rates vary with card and location, and that currency conversion can add a fee when the payment currency differs from the payout currency. Those costs and capabilities depend on your specific setup. See Shopify’s fees and costs guidance. Squarespace says the availability of Squarespace Payments is regional, so check its current local payment options and rates as well.

How much do Squarespace and Shopify cost?
Compare the plan available in your country and billing term, not a price quoted without those conditions. Shopify’s pricing page, checked October 7, 2026, said its displayed rates were accurate as of October 2, 2026 and subject to change. For the page’s displayed USD annual-billing terms, it listed Basic at $29 per month, Grow at $79 per month, Advanced at $299 per month, and Plus from $2,300 per month on a three-year term. Monthly-billing prices are displayed separately. These are specific to the page’s market and billing conditions, not universal prices; use the live page for your location and intended term: Shopify pricing.
The available Squarespace plan guidance identifies Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced, but the cited material does not establish a comparable current price schedule. Check the live plan and fee information for your country and billing term at Squarespace’s plan guide.

Separate payment processing from platform transaction fees
A subscription is only one part of the cost. Squarespace distinguishes payment processing rates, charged per purchase, from Squarespace transaction fees, which depend on the billing plan and what is sold. Rates and Squarespace Payments availability vary by region; consult the Squarespace fee guide for the current details relevant to your plan and product type.
Shopify likewise separates card-processing costs from possible third-party transaction fees. Its third-party fees depend on plan and payment circumstances, and payment-processing rates vary by card and location. Currency conversion may also add a fee when the customer pays in a currency different from the payout currency. Shopify’s US rates should not be treated as worldwide rates; check the fee documentation and the localized pricing page.
Calculate the cost for your own sales pattern
Before committing, estimate a normal month using your expected order volume, average order value, payment mix, and sales channels. Add the subscription, processing charges, any platform transaction fees, POS or other add-ons, and paid apps you actually require. Recalculate with the payment provider and plan you expect to use: Shopify says the economics of upgrading vary by location and Shopify Payments use, while Squarespace says plan and product type affect its transaction fees.
How to make a fair decision without relying on a generic winner
- Define the job of the site. Decide whether its primary purpose is brand, portfolio, service, or content presentation with sales attached, or a store whose main job is to manage commerce.
- Map every selling channel. Include online, social or marketplace sales, pop-ups, and any physical location; note the staff and tools each channel requires.
- Check plan-level requirements. Verify selling formats, staff access, reports, international features, and any POS capabilities against the current plans available in your country.
- Price the real setup. Use the correct billing term and location, then include payment processing, platform fees, add-ons, and apps in the same estimate.
- Test the same tasks if usability is decisive. Build the same sample product or service, set up checkout, review the mobile customer path, and complete the same order-management tasks on both platforms. Record plan, payment setup, apps, date, and results before making a hands-on usability claim.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Squarespace first if the website itself—its brand presentation, service information, content, or membership experience—is central and your selling needs fit its available plan features.
- Choose Shopify first if store operations drive the decision, especially when staff access, reports, in-person selling, or international commerce tools are important to verify in the plans available to you.
- Compare both carefully if you have a small product range but also need a substantial content or brand site, or if a store is growing into multiple channels. The deciding factor is the workflow and total cost, not a headline monthly price.
Neither vendor’s published plan pages establish which platform is easier to use, faster, or more likely to convert customers. Those outcomes require a documented comparison using the same tasks and conditions; plan descriptions alone cannot prove them.
