Wearing camera-equipped Ray-Ban Meta glasses every day can make their appeal obvious: taking a photo or asking an AI question feels quick and natural. It can also make the public’s unease easier to understand. To the wearer, the glasses may feel like a convenient phone camera; to someone nearby, they can look like an undisclosed recording device.
What the nickname means—and what it does not
“Pervert glasses” is a hostile nickname used in public criticism, not a neutral name for a product or its users. WIRED reports that the label has been associated with creators who record unsolicited interactions with women and post the footage. That behavior helps explain the anger, but it does not mean every person wearing smart glasses is recording people or acting maliciously. WIRED’s reporting describes the concern and Meta’s position.

The glasses at issue are camera-equipped Meta smart eyewear sold under the Ray-Ban brand. The account that prompted this discussion does not establish which model generation its author wears, so claims about a specific generation should not be read as a description of every pair.

Why recording can feel different with glasses
A phone is an obvious camera cue: someone usually raises it, points it, and looks at its screen. Glasses can capture from the wearer’s point of view without that familiar gesture. The Australian eSafety Commissioner warns that smart glasses may be less conspicuous than phones and that small recording lights can be missed, covered, or disabled. A bystander may therefore have little reason to realize a camera is in use. The Commissioner’s smart-glasses guidance explains this visibility problem.

That gap in awareness is the core privacy issue. A visible indicator can signal activity without ensuring that people nearby notice it, understand it, or have a meaningful chance to object. A safeguard against secretly recording is not the same thing as informed consent.
When the camera light signals capture—and when it may not
Deliberate photos and videos
The author’s account says the capture LED flashes for photos and blinks during video. It also says second-generation glasses disable the camera if the light is covered, and describes a Meta update intended to detect physical modifications. Those protections concern camera behavior; they do not make a small light obvious to everyone around the wearer.

Some AI camera requests
The same account says certain newer-model AI requests—for example, asking about a landmark or plant—may use the camera without lighting the LED. It reports Meta’s explanation that imagery from these requests is not saved in AI conversation history and that facial recognition is not used for them. Those are the company’s claims as reported in the article, not an independent test or a guarantee that every bystander will understand when the camera is being used. On 27 August 2026, TechRadar reported that an update was rolling out to stop recording if the LED is covered after recording has begun. Meta’s VP of Wearables, Alex Himel, said: “The camera won’t start recording if the LED is blocked, but some people try to bypass this by starting a recording and then covering it up. A fix for this is starting to roll out — the camera will now stop working if the light is covered during a recording.” The report describes a rollout, not a guarantee that the update is already available to every wearer or device. Why a working light may still be hard to notice
A Hamburg data-protection authority analysis, as reported by TechRadar, found that the LED “is not easily visible in many environments, particularly outdoors and in direct sunlight”. That finding concerns visibility in particular conditions; it does not establish that every indicator is invisible or that every model behaves identically. It does underline why a camera safeguard and a bystander’s ability to detect recording are separate questions. TechRadar’s report on the authority analysis describes the concern.

The author’s practical advice is to tell people before recording conversations, remove or shutter the glasses in sensitive settings, and ask before posting identifiable footage of strangers. These steps address the social problem the indicator cannot solve: people should not have to guess whether a conversation or image is being captured or shared.

- Before recording a conversation, tell the people involved and give them a chance to decline.
- In settings where privacy matters, take the glasses off or close the camera shutter rather than relying on others to spot a small light.
- Before posting footage that identifies a stranger, ask their permission.
Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton told WIRED that the terms of service make users responsible for complying with applicable laws and using the glasses safely and respectfully. He also said users “shouldn’t use them for engaging in harmful activities like harassment, infringing on privacy rights, or capturing sensitive information.” That guidance is not a substitute for checking the rules that apply where a recording is made: recording laws differ by jurisdiction and setting, and the available reporting does not establish a legal answer for every situation.
