Square Competitors and Alternatives for 2026: Which Fits Your Business

Square alternatives differ by constraint. Compare Helcim, Lightspeed, Toast, Shopify POS, Stripe, Clover, and SumUp by cost, inventory, workflow, and geography.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single Square alternative that wins for every merchant. Square bundles point of sale, payment acceptance, software, and hardware in one ecosystem, and the alternatives that compete with it each solve a different problem: lower or more transparent processing costs, deeper inventory control, restaurant service workflows, tighter ecommerce synchronization, or custom online payments. The right shortlist starts with the constraint that hurts most in your business today, then checks cost, hardware, and availability in your own country.

What Square covers, and why merchants look elsewhere

Square’s own comparison page describes a product set that spans online and in-person selling, inventory, reporting, payment acceptance, and hardware, and it says multi-location management features are available. That breadth is why many small merchants use it as a starting point. The same page lists the providers Square itself names as competitors: SumUp, Zettle, Dojo, Shopify, Stripe, EPOS Now, Lightspeed, Toast, PayPal, Adyen, and Worldpay. Note that Square’s page is a UK/GB page, so its product scope and terms apply to that market.

Merchants usually start looking at alternatives for specific reasons rather than general dissatisfaction. Common triggers are rising card-processing costs at higher volume, inventory that has outgrown a simple catalog, restaurant operations that need kitchen displays and table service, a need for more control over the merchant account or processor, and ecommerce or custom-integration requirements that a single packaged POS does not meet well.

What this list is, and what it is not

This guide is an editorial comparison of 2026 competitor and alternative pages from several publishers and from Square and Shopify. It is not a Product Hunt ranking, launch list, or category dataset, and none of the alternatives below were selected or ordered by Product Hunt. The sources also do not include independent testing of these products for this guide. Where a publisher claims to have tested platforms, that is the publisher’s claim, and the results should be read as theirs.

#1 Best Overall
Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS
  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.

How to compare alternatives

Compare candidates on the same six axes. Headline prices alone rarely settle the question.

  • Total cost at your real volume and transaction mix. Add the monthly software plan, card-present and card-not-present processing, hardware, add-ons, and any contract terms. A starting price on a comparison page is not a quote for your business.
  • Inventory and location complexity. Look at catalog size, variants, purchasing, vendor management, and central controls across locations. These matter more as operations grow.
  • Industry workflow. Restaurants may need menu management, kitchen displays, table service, online ordering, and service coordination. A simple checkout counter does not need any of that, and paying for it is wasteful.
  • How online and in-person sales connect. If you sell online too, check how products, inventory, orders, and customer records sync between channels.
  • Processing and integration flexibility. Some alternatives are traditional merchant accounts, some are third-party processors, and some are developer APIs. Those are not interchangeable with an all-in-one general POS.
  • Hardware and geography. Confirm device compatibility, availability, support, and which payment processing applies in the country where you trade. Pages written for the UK, Canada, and the US quote different prices and terms, and they should not be blended.

Shortlist by business need

The table below maps each alternative to the need it is most often compared on. It is a set of prompts for your own evaluation, not a ranking.

Rank #2
Square Handheld - Portable POS - Credit Card Machine to Accept Payments for Restaurants, Retail, Beauty, and Professional Services
  • With Square Handheld, you can accept payments, take tableside orders, or scan barcodes anywhere. With a slim design and comfortable grip, the POS is easy to carry in your palm or pocket. Square Handheld is designed to withstand water splashes and dust. Add an optional protective case for accidental drops. A long-lasting battery and offline payments let you keep selling.
  • Slim, pocketable, and lightweight so you can accept payments wherever your customers are.
  • Take tableside orders, bust lines, or use the built-in barcode scanner, all with one sleek device.
  • A battery that can power through your shift and offline payments let you keep selling, even if your internet is down.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one simple rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts required.
Business need Alternatives worth comparing Why they may fit Caveat
Growing business that wants interchange-plus pricing or B2B payment tools Helcim The TechRepublic comparison (dated July 2, 2026) describes interchange-plus pricing, volume discounts, and B2B tools. Requires an application and underwriting. Any pricing advantage depends on your actual mix and volume, and the page is an editorial comparison rather than a quote.
Retail with deeper inventory or multiple locations Lightspeed Comparison sources associate it with advanced inventory, purchasing, and multi-location management. Check required functions, integrations, plan tier, hardware, and local terms.
Restaurant or food service Toast Sources describe restaurant-specific hardware and workflows, including menus, kitchen displays, ordering, and service operations. Compare the workflow, plan, processing, hardware, and contract terms for the specific location.
Ecommerce-led seller adding in-person sales Shopify POS Sources describe centralized or synchronized commerce across online and physical sales. The Shopify page is Canada-oriented. Plan requirements, payment-provider charges, hardware, and country-specific costs need checking.
Developer-led online payments or custom checkout Stripe The comparison describes APIs, global payments, subscriptions, marketplaces, and custom checkout. Not a like-for-like replacement for an inventory-rich POS. Budget for integration and development effort.
Configurable packaged POS with choice of payment arrangements Clover Sources describe app-based configuration and options involving merchant providers. Pricing and processor choice can depend on the provider and your merchant agreement.
Mobile or occasional in-person sales SumUp Square names SumUp as a competitor, and the editorial comparison includes it among options for mobile and low-ticket selling. Verify local device, fee, and account terms. The evidence does not establish a universal advantage over Square.

Choosing by operating model

The table tells you where to look. The points below explain how to narrow it.

Retail with growing inventory

If your problem is catalog depth, purchasing, or managing several stores from one back office, put inventory tools at the top of the checklist and test them with your own product data. Ask each vendor to demonstrate a purchase order, a transfer between two locations, and a variant-level stock count. A product list that looks simple in a demo can break down with hundreds of variants.

Rank #3
Sale
Square Register (2nd Generation) - Powered by POS
  • A complete countertop point of sale — Combine dual responsive touchscreens, built-in POS software, and durable hardware for a fast, reliable checkout experience.
  • Serve customers faster — Run smoothly through busy shifts, complex menus, and big orders with high-speed processing, memory, and responsive touchscreen displays.
  • Accept every way they pay — Take all major cards at one simple rate, with no hidden fees or long-term contracts. Receive funds as soon as the next business day.
  • Handle real-world demands — Resist everyday spills, dust, and wear with a durable, IP54-rated design.
  • Stay reliable through every rush — Maintain strong connectivity and consistent performance through your busiest hours.

Restaurants and food service

Restaurant buyers should map one full service cycle, from table seating through kitchen ticket, payment, and end-of-day reporting, and check it against each candidate. Kitchen display and table service requirements are the main reason to compare a restaurant-focused system with a general checkout. If you do not run table service or a kitchen, most of that functionality is cost without benefit.

Ecommerce businesses adding a shop floor

If most of your revenue is online, the main question is synchronization: whether products, stock levels, orders, and customer records stay consistent across channels without manual exports. Check that the same catalog feeds both the storefront and the counter, and confirm which payment provider charges apply to in-person transactions.

Custom online payments and developers

A developer-oriented provider suits a business that needs a custom checkout, subscription billing, or a marketplace model. It does not replace a full POS on its own. Count the engineering time for integration, reconciliation, and ongoing maintenance as part of the cost.

Mobile and occasional selling

If you sell at events, markets, or on the move with low-ticket sales, the device, fee structure, and funds-availability rules matter more than inventory depth. Confirm the terms in your country before you rely on them for regular trading.

When a switch is worth evaluating

These triggers justify a structured comparison. They do not prove that Square cannot support your business. Processing costs becoming significant as volume grows, inventory or location complexity exceeding what your current setup handles, restaurant-specific operational needs, a wish for more processor choice, and stronger ecommerce or custom-integration requirements are the most commonly cited reasons. If none of them applies to you, a switch is likely to cost more in time than it saves.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Record your monthly transaction volume, average ticket, and card mix, including card-present and online transactions.
  2. List the daily workflows and integrations you cannot do without, such as inventory counts, kitchen tickets, accounting exports, or your storefront.
  3. Request current written pricing for your specific country, plan, and business type from each shortlisted vendor.
  4. Confirm hardware compatibility, supply lead times, and what migrating your catalog and customer data would involve.
  5. Compare total operating cost over twelve months, including hardware, contract terms, and staff time to set up and train, not only the monthly fee.

How to read the price figures

The 2026 comparison pages include price and transaction-fee examples, but they are not drawn from one geography, plan, or vendor. The TechRepublic page is dated July 2, 2026. The TechnologyAdvice page records a re-evaluation on May 12, 2026. The Shopify page is Canada-oriented and was accessed October 7, 2026. Square’s comparison page is a UK/GB page and was accessed on the same date. Treat each figure as a dated example from its publisher, and check official current terms before you make a merchant decision.

Fee figures are product terms that vary by plan, country, and transaction type. They are not a market statistic, and no single price winner emerges across these sources. Some of the comparison pages also disclose affiliate relationships or sponsorships that can affect placement, so weigh their rankings accordingly.

Before you switch

Choose your country first, because processing availability, hardware, and fees differ by market. Then verify current official pricing, supported devices, contract length, and merchant eligibility for the two or three alternatives that match your constraint. A switch is a multi-week project for most businesses, so confirm the migration path before you cancel anything.
