Start with a read-only request, such as asking Cursor to list your connected Buffer channels or show your drafts. Confirm the results match the Buffer account you intended to connect.
Cursor also supports MCP configuration through its interface or mcp.json, and its documentation covers remote server URLs and OAuth. For this Buffer connection, use the dedicated setup instructions because interface labels and configuration routes may change: Cursor’s MCP documentation.
What you can do with the integration
Buffer describes MCP tools for reading channel and post information and for working with content. Its Cursor guide demonstrates prompts such as:

“Draft a Buffer post announcing the new feature I just committed and schedule it for tomorrow morning.”
Buffer’s broader MCP documentation also describes browsing queues, editing or scheduling posts, saving ideas, and retrieving post analytics. The tools available in a particular workflow depend on the connected account and the client’s supported MCP actions; check Buffer’s MCP documentation for its current tool details.
OAuth versus an API key
Use OAuth for the Cursor-specific setup above. Buffer’s dedicated guide says, “Connect Buffer to Cursor using OAuth. No API key needed.” Its general MCP instructions describe a different flow for clients without a dedicated guide: connecting to the same remote server with an API key supplied as a Bearer authorization header. These are client-specific instructions, not interchangeable steps. Follow the guide for the client you are configuring.
Review changes before scheduling or publishing
Reading channel or draft information is different from changing account data. Creating, editing, deleting, or scheduling a post—and creating an idea—can write to Buffer. MCP clients may ask you to approve these actions, but review what Cursor proposes before confirming.

Check the destination channel and the post text.
-
For scheduled content, verify the date and time against the channel’s timezone. Buffer says its account timezone is used to interpret relative time requests; its documentation represents timestamps in ISO 8601 with an explicit UTC offset.
-
Confirm any attached media and inspect the saved post or queue entry in Buffer after the action completes.
For example, “tomorrow morning” is a convenient prompt, not a precise schedule. Ask for a specific time when timing matters, then confirm the resulting scheduled record in Buffer.

When to use another Buffer workflow
Cursor’s MCP integration is a good fit when you want to work with Buffer while coding or reviewing a project. Other routes suit different needs:
| Route | Best suited to | Connection approach |
|---|---|---|
| Cursor’s Buffer MCP integration | Drafting, reviewing, or scheduling from the coding editor | Buffer’s remote MCP endpoint and OAuth |
| Another MCP client | Using Buffer tools from a different MCP-compatible assistant | Follow Buffer’s generic MCP setup; it documents an API key in a Bearer header |
| Zapier | Connecting Buffer to other apps through no-code workflows or external triggers | Use Buffer’s documented Zapier integration |
| Custom API or script | Application-specific integrations and automation | Use Buffer’s API documentation and current API guidance |
Buffer says its current API is available on Free and paid plans, and distinguishes it from its older API and social-network APIs. Plan terms and product access can change, so check Buffer’s current API help article if availability in your account differs.
