If you want to play one now, start with Star Citizen: Roberts Space Industries (RSI) says its live Alpha is accessible with an RSI Account and a Game Package. Squadron 42 is the single-player campaign, but RSI says it is still in development and unavailable to download. That makes Star Citizen the practical first choice—not a finished-game recommendation.
Which should I play first, Squadron 42 or Star Citizen?
Choose Star Citizen if your priority is to play now. RSI’s Get Started: Checklist says access requires an RSI Account and a Game Package, along with a computer that meets the requirements.

Choose Squadron 42 first only if you are willing to wait for its release. RSI Support’s February 4, 2026 article, “Where can I download Squadron 42?”, states: “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” RSI gives no release date in that guidance, so there is no confirmed timeline to plan around.

Can I play Squadron 42 now?
No. RSI’s April 16, 2026 checklist also says: “The single-player campaign, Squadron 42 is still in development, and is not yet available.” If your account owns a pledge that includes Squadron 42, RSI says you can download it after development, testing, and release. Owning such a pledge does not provide access to a playable campaign today.
Do I need to buy Star Citizen to play?
RSI says you need a Game Package to access Star Citizen. Its Pledges FAQ describes packages as including the game and at least one ship, except for the Squadron 42 standalone pledge. Package contents can differ, so check the current listing and terms on RSI before buying; the sources cited here do not establish a current price.

A pledge that includes Squadron 42 is not a way to play that campaign before release. Review what a specific package includes and whether any items are usable now or tied to future release. RSI also says its game manual, whether PDF or printed depending on pledge, will not be available until the game is closer to completion and release.
Is Star Citizen’s PTU another way to play Squadron 42?
No. The Public Test Universe (PTU) is a controlled environment for testing Star Citizen patches before release, not a separate route into the Squadron 42 campaign. RSI says PTU access is opened in waves, is not always available, and may involve incomplete builds that need revision and testing. The PTU FAQ describes testing access and Alpha maturity, not a Squadron 42 release window.

What should a new player expect from Star Citizen’s Alpha?
Star Citizen is playable, but it remains in Alpha. RSI’s PTU FAQ cautions that features in both games are still being designed, developed, and tested. Expect an evolving experience rather than the stability or completeness implied by a finished release. For the current build and development information, RSI’s Development Hub provides patch, roadmap, telemetry, and Issue Council links; build labels change over time.
