A Squad server can start normally on the host and still be invisible, unreachable, unable to load a map, or impossible to administer remotely. The reliable fix is to troubleshoot in layers: update the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD, identify the ports the running build actually uses, test the complete path through the host firewall and router, then validate rotation, layer, mod, and RCON files separately. Work from the symptom rather than changing several settings at once.

Start with the symptom, not the setting you last changed
Different failures point to different parts of the server stack. Classify what players or administrators can observe before editing files.

A successful process start proves only that the executable launched. It does not prove that the server is current, externally reachable, visible to the browser, or able to load the selected content.
Update the dedicated server before debugging anything else
An out-of-date dedicated server is a documented cause of browser-visibility problems. Update the installation first so that a networking investigation is not being performed against obsolete files. The Squad dedicated-server application ID documented by the Squad Wiki is 403240.

- Stop the Squad server process cleanly.
- Run SteamCMD against the existing installation directory. A Linux-style example is:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /srv/squad-server +login anonymous +app_update 403240 validate +quit- Wait for SteamCMD to report that the update and validation completed. A command that exits without an obvious error is not enough if the installation directory was wrong.
- Start the server with the same launch arguments you intend to troubleshoot and save the complete console output.
Do not assume that a restart automatically downloads new dedicated-server content. Keep the build identifier, operating system, launch command, and update time in your incident notes. If a problem began immediately after a game update, record whether the server files were updated at the same time.
Confirm which ports the running server actually uses
Use the launch command and current configuration as the authority. Published defaults are useful starting points, but a custom launch argument, hosting panel, or newer release can change them. The Squad installation guidance lists these common values:

Steam Support separately documents UDP remote ports 27000-27250, TCP local port 27015 as the default SRCDS RCON port, and UDP local port 27015 as default gameplay traffic. Those are general Steam/SRCDS defaults, not a replacement for the ports shown by your Squad launch command and configuration. Do not open an entire range merely because it appears in a generic guide; open the values the server is configured to use, and add a documented range only when the current release requires it.
Inspect listeners on the host
On Linux, run a listener check while the server is running:
ss -lunpt | grep -E '7787|7788|15000|27165|27166|21114'The result should show the expected UDP or TCP sockets and the process that owns them. If a port is absent, forwarding it on the router cannot make that port work. Check for a second server process, a different configured port, or a failed bind caused by another application already using the port.

Fix the complete network path: host, router, and Internet
Port forwarding is required when the computer is inside a private network. The Squad Wiki describes internal addresses such as 192.168.x.x or 10.0.x.x as addresses that are not directly exposed to the global Internet. Forwarding must point to the server computer’s stable LAN address, not to a temporary DHCP address that may change after a reboot.
- Assign the server host a DHCP reservation or another stable local address.
- Create inbound host-firewall rules for every configured game, query, beacon, and RCON port, using the correct protocol. A UDP rule does not permit TCP traffic and vice versa.
- On the router, forward the same external port numbers to the host’s stable LAN address. Ensure that an old rule does not point to a retired machine.
- Check that the router’s WAN address is genuinely public. If the router itself receives a private address or sits behind carrier-grade NAT, an IPv4 player on the Internet may not be able to reach the server even when local rules are perfect.
- Test from a network outside the hosting LAN, such as a phone using cellular data. A test from another computer on the same LAN can succeed because of local routing or NAT loopback while outside players remain blocked.
Keep the configured values consistent across four places: the server launch arguments, the host firewall, the router forwarding table, and any administration or monitoring tool. A single mismatch can produce a server that appears online locally but cannot be joined remotely.
Recognize carrier-grade NAT early
If the router’s Internet-facing address does not match the public address reported by an independent Internet service, or the router shows a private upstream address, the connection may be behind carrier-grade NAT. In that arrangement, you do not control the upstream translation device, so ordinary home-router forwarding cannot create an inbound IPv4 path. Ask the Internet provider for a public address, use a network that permits inbound connections, or move the server to a reachable host. The Squad installation guidance specifically warns that carrier-grade NAT can leave IPv4 players unable to connect after local configuration is complete.
When the server is not listed in the browser
Browser visibility depends on current server content, successful registration, and reachable query traffic. Follow this order:

403240. - Confirm that the server is listening on the configured query port, commonly
27165or27166in the Squad installation guidance. - Verify that the query port in the launch command is the same one forwarded by the router and permitted by the host firewall.
- Check the console for bind errors, registration errors, or a message showing that the advertised endpoint differs from the actual WAN path.
- Test direct reachability from outside the LAN. If the query path is unreachable, changing the server name or map will not make it appear.
Do not treat a populated local server list as proof of public visibility. Local discovery can use a different path from the Internet browser. Conversely, a browser entry can be cached or stale, so verify with a fresh external test and current console output.
When the server is listed but nobody can join
This symptom usually means that discovery succeeded but game traffic cannot complete. Compare the actual listening sockets with the game ports in the launch arguments. The common Squad guidance lists UDP 7787 and 7788; forwarding only one of them can leave a server visible but unusable.
- Check that the game ports are forwarded to the same host that owns the server process.
- Confirm that the host firewall allows inbound UDP traffic on each configured game port.
- Remove accidental port translation, such as forwarding external port 7787 to a different internal port, unless the launch command and all clients are designed for that arrangement.
- Look for another process using the intended port. A failed bind can cause the server to start with a fallback or different value.
- Ask one player on an unrelated network to test while you watch the server console. A connection attempt that produces no log entry points to the network path; an entry followed by a kick or load failure points toward content or configuration.
Check the beacon and query paths as well as gameplay. The installation guidance lists beacon port 15000 and query ports 27165 and 27166, but the active configuration takes precedence. Steam’s general port documentation should be treated as supporting context, not as evidence that every listed Steam port belongs in your Squad rules.
Repair map, layer, and rotation errors
Map problems are configuration or content problems even when they first appear as a failed join. Squad’s installation documentation identifies Server.cfg, LayerRotation.cfg, LevelRotation.cfg, Rcon.cfg, Admins.cfg, and ExcludedLayers.cfg as relevant files. Check them independently instead of editing all of them together.

Compare every level and layer name in the rotation files with the installed content character-for-character. Case, punctuation, underscores, and suffixes matter. A name that looks correct to a person can still fail if one character differs from the installed asset.

Check rotation syntax
Inspect LayerRotation.cfg and LevelRotation.cfg for malformed separators, stray characters, incomplete entries, and accidental blank or duplicate lines. Preserve a copy of the last known-good file before editing. If the server reports an empty rotation, replace the file temporarily with a minimal, known-installed entry to determine whether the parser or a particular layer is responsible.
Review exclusions
An entry in ExcludedLayers.cfg can deliberately prevent a layer from appearing. Remove or correct an exclusion only after confirming that the layer should be available. An excluded layer and a misspelled layer can look similar in the console, so check both files together.

Temporarily remove a recently added mod or custom layer from the active configuration and start the base server. If the base rotation works, reintroduce one change at a time. Confirm that each mod downloaded completely, matches the server build, and is present on the server rather than only on an administrator’s client. This binary test is more useful than repeatedly changing network settings while a missing asset is preventing level load.

RCON failures have three common causes: the service is not reachable, the password is wrong or empty, or the connecting SteamID is not mapped as an administrator. The troubleshooting sequence should follow that order.
- Open
Rcon.cfgand verify that a non-empty password is configured. Treat it as a secret; rotate it immediately if it appeared in a log, screenshot, ticket, or public configuration. - Confirm the RCON port in the file and compare it with the launch command, host firewall, router forwarding, and RCON client. The Squad installation guidance lists
21114as a common value, while Steam’s general SRCDS documentation lists27015as a default in a different context; use the value your server actually binds. - Test reachability from outside the host network. A correct password cannot compensate for a blocked TCP or UDP path.
- Check
Admins.cfgand verify the administrator SteamID format and value. A valid account with a mismatched ID will connect without the expected privileges. - Review the console for authentication, timeout, maximum-connection, or malformed-setting errors. The configuration guide documents maximum connections and timeout checking, so make sure an overly restrictive setting is not rejecting legitimate sessions.
Do not publish RCON credentials in support requests. Redact passwords and tokens while retaining the port, relevant error lines, and SteamID format needed for diagnosis.
Handle crashes and unexplained instability methodically
Capture evidence before changing the installation. Record the exact server build, operating system, complete launch command, active mods and custom layers, the first error line in the console, and what players were doing when the failure occurred. The first error is often more useful than a later cascade of warnings.
When appropriate, add the documented -fullcrashdump launch option and reproduce the failure once. Preserve the resulting dump and logs with timestamps. Change one variable per restart: first run the updated base server, then restore the rotation, then add mods individually. If several files and ports are changed together, you lose the comparison needed to identify the cause.
A clean base start does not prove that every mod is compatible, and a crash after a map change does not automatically indicate a router failure. Separate process stability, content loading, and remote connectivity in your test notes.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting when maintenance is the blocker
Managed Squad server hosting is a reasonable category to consider after you have established that router access, carrier-grade NAT, or ongoing maintenance is the limiting factor. It does not remove the need to understand the server’s ports and configuration, and provider capabilities vary by geography and build.

Move only after exporting configuration, rotation, admin, and exclusion files with secrets removed. Test the new endpoint from an external network before inviting a full player group.

Prepare an escalation report that can be acted on
If the documented checks do not resolve the problem, assemble a concise report instead of sending only “the server is down.” Include:
- Server build and the date SteamCMD last completed an update
- Operating system and hardware or hosting environment
- Complete launch command, with passwords and tokens redacted
- Relevant portions of
Server.cfg,LayerRotation.cfg,LevelRotation.cfg,ExcludedLayers.cfg,Rcon.cfg, andAdmins.cfg, with secrets removed - Console-log excerpt beginning at the first error line
- Configured game, query, beacon, and RCON ports, including protocol
- Network topology: host LAN address, router arrangement, and whether the WAN connection uses carrier-grade NAT
- Exact reproduction steps, affected players, and whether the test was performed from outside the host network
The official troubleshooting documentation directs administrators to the troubleshooting section and official Discord bug-report channels for unresolved cases. A report containing the build, logs, configuration context, and a reproducible sequence gives support enough information to distinguish a game defect from a local networking or content problem.
